In Ocotal at Father Rooster’s they have a house drink called the Tica Linda. I don’t know what all is in it but I do know my headache usually beats a 6 on the richter scale on Sunday mornings after a couple. Needless to say you sleep very well – even if the electicity is out. 😆

Perhaps someone can get the secret recipe and this can serve as the signature drink of the entire Rim.
Seems to distill the flavor of Costa Rica…good candidate for signature CR national cocktail….when I was working on the Temblor Tumbler, I thought a good marketing slogan could be “Sharp jolt with only minor damage reported”, but that might fit your Tica Linda better…

A visit to Octal seems in order. Bob

P.S. Your last comment about electricity invites another concoction named “CR ICE Out” in honor of the beloved power utility.
It would probably be easier to get a CR ICE OUT than an electric meter! 😆

There are certainly plenty of places to shop for furniture in the Hermosa / Panama / Coco / Liberia Area. Call Magda at Concierge – she will put packages together – if you have a price point – make sure to let her know.

Well said David! Like many I too prefer to buy local and independent, however those choices are often limited and becoming fewer literally by the day.

My dad was a small business owner and luckily survived the farm crisis from 78-84 but he got lucky and sold and retired before the next wave closed many independent auto parts dealers.

You are correct – it is all part of the cycle of business and it will continue to evolve. If you travel to Bentonville you will see many independent businesses surviving side by side with WalMart and you will also see a slew of luxury cars driven by long time WalMart employees. It is a very wealthy area.

While not all WalMart employees enjoy such luxury and while many of us could NOT afford to work there at below proverty levels – many people do and while I’m sure turnover is high they do at least provide a lot of jobs that keep some people off the dole. Many workes I’ve talked to are retired, spouse has a good job, just need supplemental income, ect.

I prefer Target but then I live in Minneapolis and I’m sure if the layers were peeled back it would not be much different.:D
While Wal-Mart in the US certainly has issues regarding workers rights – to compare it to slavery is a complete fabrication and shows your ignorance. I think you do have a point regarding the corporate culture of Wal-Mart and the complete disregard to CR customs. However in todays global market – mañana doesn’t cut it in any country.

Haven’t you left the US yet or are you logged on from your nuclear fall out shelter.
John,
I am still here in the States as vulnerable as ever..more vulnerable as time progresses.
“Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property and are forced to work.[1”
In what way do we not qualify as slaves under the above definition?

You don’t own property as the the State can take it from you at any time. They can (and do) seize bank accounts and property daily. Mortgage foreclosures, credit card defaults and loss of jobs and income are all due to the banking cartels and their absolute control of money, wages, the economy and your standard of living. Everyone is forced to work to survive and live under this paradigm. And it is not necessary. If you do not understand this, the ignorance is yours.

“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live”
Great quote.
In Miami, we have a large Latin immigrant population and over the decades, they have acclimated quite well into the US culture which means they have adapted to a certain attitude towards work. Importing a work force into a culture has worked here so far.

However, it seems to me that exporting an American corporate culture to Costa Rica would be more difficult. If Ticos who are employed at Walmarts in Costa Rica are indeed somewhat unhappy at work, maybe it has to do with an attempt to overlay Walmarts’ employee slave-like behavior policies onto a culture which is in direct conflict with that sort of policy. Something has to give. People who are used to living free from work slavery are naturally going to be resistant. But economic necessities generally overcome this resistance, at least that has been the case in the U.S. And it seems to work elsewhere. U.S. jobs have been exported successfully all over the planet. Any bets on who does the adapting, Ticos or Walmart Corporate policy in CR?
There is someone in or near Playa San Miguel that has a GTO convertable – I’ve seen him a few time tooling through the mountains, top down, hair flying, music blaring. He always looks like he’s living the life – think “The Dude”.

    😆

I like David’s “situational” description. While I struggle I typically do ok. The only time I’ve really been frustrated was trying to buy a gas can in a hardware store in Coco. Yikes!

Sprite! That bastion of jounalistic integrity (sic) AM Costa Rica has an article today that two US Blackhawk Helicopters are going to be in Guancaste and Punttarenas on Medical Training missions. Please alert all of your friends along the Pacific so they can stock up on supplies for the invasion.

There are also two beach campgrounds in Southern Nicoya. One right off the main road to Playa San Miguel and the other on Playa Coyote. Both near food and beer. However – the bathrooms leave something to be desired.
