If you search the site Scott has commented on this many times. It appears he was right – it will never happen.

I saw a guy in Liberia bring in about three dozen frozen packages of Oscar Meyer Cheesy Hotdogs. Customs check a couple of the foil packages and sent him on his way. Crazy stuff.

I would just check with the municipality. You will probably need a permit but I would think that a simple drawing would work versus hiring an architenct.
The Royal Marine Commandos do not do humanitarian aid…

If this ship showed up off the coast of anywhere in the USA offering free medical treatment, we all know that a LOT more than 1,000 people would show up…

Lastly, if the “the self feeding paranoia is really starting to piss” you off please do the adult thing and choose what you read and what you do not read.

    Scott
and I do not see an issue if more than 1000 citizens would show up for free medical aid.

I just find it interesting that being former military you closed and reopened the original thread and then today you are again pounding the “illegal” war and all of the human suffering going on. I gotta tell you I agree with a lot of that but the US Military can and does offer humanitarian aid without a hidden agenda.

I mentioned in the other thread that if native Costa Ricans or expats from other countries DO NOT think that the US Military is NOT in CR everyday of the week then they are just fooling themselves.

Go park up at the Liberia airport and watch the air crews enter the AWACS up there. The only reason CR can still afford NOT to have a military is because of the United States. That is great for Costa Rica but people really have to stop being so naive.

Boy oh boy. Can someone explain why a few 1000 people are showing up to get medical assistance if there is no need? Really I want some insight.

Yesterday they interviewed a guy that was going for hernia surgery for a problem he’s had for three years. Just looking for an explanation?

The self feeding paranoia is really starting to piss me off.

Also – Scott – being a former Royal Marine – did you ever take part in Humanitarian Aid?

I always thought it was attributed to grunge music and coffee houses but you gotta be on to something.

Here is a link to a drug bust in CR this week. It also discusses the sub they captured last week.

Also, for those of you who do not think the US military is in CR anyway – ever see the crews that board the AWACS at Liberia Airport?

    Wow. Hoopty doo.

    1. What “humanitarian” crisis is Costa Rica suffering from at this time?

I don’t think it mentioned a “crisis”. Every time I’m in CR I see schools, clinics, infrustructure that could use some attention. 7000 Marines can do a lot of good work.

    2. What sort of “humanitarian missions” would take place in Costa Rica and where?

Do you care! Help is help.

    3. Based on the truly horrific, drug crime related slaughters we have witnessed in Mexico, don’t you personally think it would be better conducting these kinds of “anti-narcotics operations” in northern Mexico?

Not really. We already have troops helping Mexico. Did anyone just read about the submarine captured in Ecuador? Wake up – you intercept drugs when and where you can.

    4. With what is probably the world’s worst environmental disaster going on right now in the Gulf of Mexico, don’t you personally think it would be more appropriate (and certainly more appreciated) if these “humanitarian missions” were done in the Gulf?

Sure, 7000 Marines and several thousand sailors with their ships in dock in Mobile could help clean up beach areas. There are also 10,000 unemployed workers in the gulf area that BP could hire to do the same job. Resources are resources but there is no reason to go Glen Beck on a mission to Costa Rica.

I haven’t been down since March but tourism seemed good but real estate bad. Hopefully it will rebound soon.
I agree with the above poster in that it will be hard to sell an unfurnished condo in Playa del Coco. In fact, it is hard to sell a furnished condo, right now.
While getting furniture made locally may be the way to go, I suggest you head to Alyss and purchase furniture & accessories plus whatever else you need. Making the furniture will take time, so if you need to start renting it ASAP, this may be the deciding factor.
Costaricafinca is right on. Rentals are a little slow too unless it’s a holiday.

You can also try Magda at Concierge. She sometimes has “extra stuff” around. I believe their offices are now in Hermosa.

I’m mystified by the teak comments. Recently I was told that American Lumber teak mill near Jicaral is sending out five containers a week. Granted they are a large international company but someone is buying it.

My US Blackberry (ATT International Plan) works great in CR. I do have to reboot in the mornings to pick up e-mail so I’m sure one activated in CR (US unlocked or CR Simm) will work fine.

I pay $2.50 per minute voice. $1.97 per mb data sent or received and .50 per text. I have an 8700.

costaricafinca is correct. There is a new Hilton Garden Inn accross the street. You could talk to the front desk and see if you stayed for lunch or cocktails if they would hold your luggage. Worth a try.
