I think I read that you have to have your residency to get a cell phone. Is that true? If so, can you just bring an unlocked phone from the US and buy SIM cards as needed?
Buy a cellphone that is “OEM FACTORY UNLOCKED MOBILES” and that has QUAD band as possible. If you get “prepaid Sim card, all what you need to show is your passport…you can buy more credits at any authorized mobile agent/store or online. I was in Costa Rica last week and I used my cell with a QUAD band(GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900). I bought my prepaid SIM card from Kolbi/ICE…I can receive/send(make) text and phone calls.
Why would you use that when you can use Googlephone for free?
Google phone/voice is free to call USA and Canada phone numbers only for the rest of 2011. Any numbers beside USA and Canada, there is a charge. By 2012, all calls will not be free…of course, unless Google keep it the way it is(free).
Ahh..Obama, he started by cutting our VA disability compensation COLA for two years, Social Security COLA for two years; and froze our federal salaries for two years. I’m glad the military trained me to always expect, the unexpected! And, always have a Plan B. I have prepared financially for whatever storm may come, and fortunately in my case, social security will just pay for a new boat. In the U.S. class battle, there will only be the haves and the havenots. The middle class has and will continue to be destroyed. I truely thought there would be a mass demonstration or quasi-revolution, when Obama froze veterans disability COLA for two years. I was sadly mistaken!
The Office of President of the USA does not make laws, which are the job of US Congress. Any cuts on VA benefits, Social Security benefits were made into laws by US Congress not by the President of the United States (either party). Falsely blaming anyone without actual facts is completely irresponsible.

    Newmanincr,

Here is a link for the list of GSM cell phones certified by Grupo ICE.

I personally use an unlocked Blackberry phone. You can check eBay, Amazon, or pricetrace.com for prices on factory unlocked GSM phones.
Living in Manuel Antonio, we usually bust out a big shopping trip in one day, in and out of the Central Vally.
This time we have too much to accomplish in one day. I’m looking for a decent and not expensive place to stay in the Escazu area, any suggestions? La Garrita is a bit far out, and we don’t like staying right in town. Most of our errands are in the Santa Ana and Escazu area Thanks for any help.
Pranaspakeywest,
You can check http://www.tripadvisor.com. The website provides ratings provided by past customers. I hope you to find the right place to stay in Escazu or Santa Ana.

    Hi CostaRicaBill,

Does your son be an employee of this US-based company or work as an independent contractor (self-employed)?

    http://www.lowtax.net/lowtax/html/jcrlab.html#work
A company which has more than 30 employees can apply for a general work permit enabling it to bring foreign technicians and executives to work in the jurisdiction without the need to make an individual application for each person it wishes to engage. Such a permit is valid for one year and must also be renewed annually.

    http://www.justlanded.com/english/Costa-Rica/Costa-Rica-Guide/Jobs/Work-for-Foreigners
You can work legally if you are self employed. Any employer can hire you as a contracted professional. You are working for yourself in this manner. You are illegal if you are employed by a person or company. Self employed is a fine line but easy to arrange. You can ask for receipt for your contract.

Anyway, check with recommended CR immigration lawyers by Scott to get the latest CR immigrations laws…Due diligence.

    I hope this help.

Good road signs! HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! CR does not have road signs other than the major highways and no addresses, so yes, I can read a paper map and have but like everyone said once off the main drag you are F&*^% without a GPS. Spend the freakin money and use common sense.
Alexander69,

Are you responding to the website link that I posted??? The link that I posted provided a GPS navigational software of Costa Rica for Garmin GPS devices…they had an update last Nov. 2010 that fixes the general navigation fixes throughout Costa Rica and added more roads. Since then, I had no problem so far…

in reply to: Calling the US using a land line? #199463
Hello Folks,

Thinking about moving a branch office to CR. I know the deal with Voice over IP but we need something rock solid. Meaning high quality communications. We have found a way of getting high quality calls via land line in to CR for 15 cents a minute. Does anyone know the cost to use a land line via ICE to call the US. Probably need to call the US about 10-15 hrs a week. I’m guessing cell phones would be a huge drop in quality and much more expensive but I have no specific knowledge of this.

    Location: Atenas

    Thanks for your input.
There are also some available VOIP services…one time fee…no more monthly payments…just connect the equipment to the router/modem(high speed internet connection).

You can search on Google or any search engine…search subject: voip one time fee…you will get list of companies that offer this service.
Does CHASE have any branches in CR? I know they took over the Washington Mutual Call center near SJ when they bought them last year. I have accounts with CHASE and when I move to CR, just wonder if I will have to open accts with other banks like HSBC or BCR. Thanks !
I don’t believe CHASE have any branches in CR. To my knowledge HSBC, Scotia and Citibank are the only banks from US or Canada.

    No man is an island!!!

Whether we like it or not…we will make a decision for someone else. If we ever made a decision for our family, our job, friends, it means we made a decision for everyone else.

And those “everyone else” will make a decision for you, me…whether we like it or not.

Yes, I believe to be responsible for my action and my own life, but I do not rule out to make a decision for everyone else and those everyone else to make decision for me else, only if necessary.

However, if we stop making decision for everyone else and everyone else stop making a decision for us 100%, then the world will halt, the human evolution will end.

The only time a person stop making decision for everyone else is when he/she is the only living creature on this planet.

Lack of common sense and lots of idiotic ideas is not the way of living the 21st century.
