My wife and I are also using Barry for our move in October. I agree with what Cindy said. He was quick to respond to the inquiry, answered any questions and we’ve had positive feedback from others he has helped move.
kclowerMembercheck out http://www.ie-management.org I recently purchased some property in CR using money in an IRA. I’ve been working with Marco Caporale for a few years and he is very knowledgable in investing using your IRA and could probably answer your questions.
kclowerMemberI think there are a lot of familes living in CR, but you may be correct (I’m not sure)in stating that, it is the lower demographic of new residents. First it is expensive to become a rentista resident (not a retiree), which is what you would apply for (I think) if you’re a family living here. You have to tie up $60k for the next five years to do this. I could see how that may be difficult for a young family. Now having said that, I met my new neighbors on my last visit to Costa Rica (I’m moving in October) and one family was from LA and has three school aged children and one in college back in the US. My wife and I plan to have children once we’re there. She’s 28 and I’m 36. Our reason for leaving? We were looking for a better way of life, less stress and lower cost of living in a country that doesnt think it owns the world. My wife’s family is from CR so for us, it was an easy decision. Hope this helps.
kclowerMemberMy husband and I just signed up for the ARCR last month. We finally got our packet in the mail for sign up after a few weeks…not bad. I haven’t personally use their US PO BOX, but setting up your own Miami based PO BOX is only $15.00 per month and you get up to 5 lbs of mail per month. Their office is a sort of one stop shop of services. I enjoy their chat forum as well. They have been helpful for us, but you have to ask if you intend to get your questions answered. They do have INS and CAJA programs. These are monopolies, you are right. That’s about it!
kclowerMemberCan I also add Playa Conchal with beautful blue water and white sand and Playa Potrero in the Guanacaste province…
kclowerMemberKeith,
My wife and I just returned from completing our application and setting up our bank account. You first must set up the bank account itself with a minimum of $30. Then you have to set a a special CD type account with the amount of $60K. This account will automatically withdrawl $1000 worth of colones each month and deposit it into your established account. Once this is set up they give you a certificate that shows you have done this. This certificate is part of the application. We also were taken (by our attorney) to the police station to be fingerprinted, deliver four passport sized photographs and answer some quetions. Our attorney was very helpful. His name is Romulo Pacheco; email is crlexs@racsa.co.cr He charged $1250 for my wife and I and than there’s a $600 deposit that is required by the government that is refunded to you once you become a permanant resident (sort of a deposit in case you have to be deported…interesting). Now we are just waiting for our cedula, which we were told could be two to four months. I would definitely recommend his services. Hope this helps.

kclowerMembertamarindo is a good area as well.
kclowerMembermy wife and I use Sergio Solera at Facio y Canas. Its a large firm that has a good reputation. That said, its a large firm, so some cost may be higher than you may find elsewhere, but I chalk that up to “paying for security”. His email is ssolera@fayca.com.
