This is a perfect example of topical research.

your asking the wrong questions

the questions you should be asking would allow you to go a bit deeper and then start asking why

costa rica has been scrambling to artificially PROP up the dollar for the last few years now

so now we have to deal with artificially supporting a fiat currency’s worth as opposed to the free market.

Does this make any sense???

in fact the federal reserve has been doing this for years.. printing more and more dollars into the U.S. economy.

Doomsday predictions ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t know the answers all I can say is I can see clear actions that go contrary to what these idiots in Washington say.

The dollar has been very consistent against the colon (my primary concern) for a couple of years or longer.
Absolutely correct. Since 1996 (the earliest I could get data for) the USD gained against the CRC steadily until 2006 but since then except for 2009-2010 (no doubt due to the financial collapse here in the US) the colon has stayed almost constant against the dollar. See these figures for the exchange rate on January 1st from 1996-2012:

1996-01-01 $1.00=191.76 CRC
1997-01-01 $1.00=219.88 CRC
1998-01-01 $1.00=243.65 CRC
1999-01-01 $1.00=271.42 CRC
2000-01-01 $1.00=297.7 CRC
2001-01-01 $1.00=317.45 CRC
2002-01-01 $1.00=328.07 CRC
2003-01-01 $1.00=367.08 CRC
2004-01-01 $1.00=409.07 CRC
2005-01-01 $1.00=449.29 CRC
2006-01-01 $1.00=495.8 CRC
2007-01-01 $1.00=498.35 CRC
2008-01-01 $1.00=487 CRC
2009-01-01 $1.00=539.88 CRC
2010-01-01 $1.00=546.48 CRC
2011-01-01 $1.00=497.24 CRC
2012-01-01 $1.00=490.47 CRC

The rate fluctuated quite a bit in 2011 and there was a spike on January 1 (what happened on New Years Day?) but since January 2nd of this year the rate has been almost flat:

I’ll mark my calendar for January of 2016 and we’ll see if your doomsday scenario pays out.
Me too. The frequency of doomsday predictions has been so high that I wonder why anyone pays the slightest attention to them. Apparently there are a lot of people who either never read the story of the boy who cried wolf or don’t get the moral of the story.

Just wait untl the Fed has to stop printing money, I read an article that they can’t stop at the moment, if they did total economic collapse would pretty much be the result. The Fed and IMF are trying to figure out what to do for the very near future.

All this printing and it is given to banks has propelled the NYSE to new highs…..but this too shall correct itself and not in a pretty way I am betting.

Stay in your seats and keep your seat belt on, it’s going to get bumpy kids.

but there is really nothing one can do

How’s Belize looking to you now? It’s a tiny spot on a map, not surging in anything, under the radar (except when they knock down a ruin to use as road fill…whoops).

That is what is so very appealing about it down here, you can kinda disappear.

There is nothing to worry about, the IRS is running Obamacare, I am positive they (IRS) know exactly how to run Obamacare with the least financial impact on you as possible.
Actually it’s the Department of Health and Human Services that will be administering Obamacare, the only role the IRS will play is determining whether or not you have healthcare from your tax return and assessing the penalty if you don’t. But something tells me that isn’t going to reassure you very much.
Well, that changes everything!! I feel very confident about it now (sarcasm off now).

Only the person that was in charge of the IRS targeting conservative groups at the time is in charge of the IRS part in Obamacare.

Help me understand that why someone living OUTSIDE of the US is required to maintain Obamacare mandadted insurance when they are not in the US to use it? It could not be possibly tied to the potential tax/penanlty could it?
Of course they had to involve the IRS in running (enforcing) Obamacare…. it’s the government agency that people fear most and has the ability to make you penniless! They can take money right from your bank account if they choose to.

They’re already using the “tax” code as a backdoor welfare program for a good precentage of Obama supporters (ie The “earned” income credit)…. so why not!
And that my friend is very scary….they have the ability and power to make you penniless within seconds. I don’t anyone should be allowed that much power.

If you are not covered by Medicare, do you have to get Obamacare?

how do you like Belieze so far????

please share your continuing experiences because I am now 5 years ahead in my mind eye and need to start doing some diligence. Costa Rica is hanging on a thread and if what you say is true which I believe the trends show this

your right more and more Americans like Sweikert LOL only kidding dude you know I love you ๐Ÿ™‚

will be flocking to costa rica with thier cultural habits and of course there will always be a supply to meet that demand.

I may have to find another spot to find.

how are the people..?? are they all dark skinned??? meaning do you stick out like a sore thumb

thanks

David
Hey David….I am headed back down to Belize next month for a couple of months then full time in November, I have to get some things finished up here with my company and I need to get through hurricane season here in Fla.

The people are fantastic, have not met one yet that I did not like. Not everyone is dark skinned, the population mix is about 50% hispanic, 20% mennonite, 10% asian, and the rest make up mayan (origional Belizeans) and african/caribbean. The best part is where I am at, only about 1% white boys.

I don’t stick out too terribly bad, the culture is a very non judgmental community, the gringo tax is around but after a very short time you can get past that, once people know you are a local.

Housing is very inexpensive right now, albeit there are some house that are getting all the $, especially on the coast. I am in San Ignacio, 30,000 population and the 2nd largest city in Belize, about 10 miles from Guatamala. But an average 2/3 bed 1/2 bath will run around $100,000 USD or you can get a wooden mennonite house on stilts for about $40,000 USD.

Ther are not any box stores or franchises there, no wal mart, starbucks, McD’s. Everything is local owned, which is kinda nice not to have a half caf-decaf-double espresso-latte-with whipped cream option for your coffee fix.

Come on over, I’ll save you a spot on the compound.

Swashbuckler out……

I just saw Obama told Mexico that the violence was to be blamed on the US for manufacturing firearms. I am sure he followed up with a big fat check to Mexico to compensate them. Maybe someone in CR could benefit from Obama, he has an open check book from the taxpayers. The Dow hit over $15k today, all is good!

good to see your experimenting different areas. I don’t like Belize. too poor and VERY Corrupt. so its alot tougher to blend in thier especially if your a foreigner.

John mcafee http://www.whoismcafee.com/ had his exploits there

I have friends that bought into the dream and cannot sell their house there.

Your right about costa rica and prices are rising quickly here.

I mean look at this house. I know the area well.

Damn Davidd…that was cold…haha!

Well, you’ll have 1 less in CR now, I have commited to starting out in Belize, although I will be making trips to CR, I promised my daughter that I would teach her to surf and Belize does not have much surf unless you go out as a hurricane is bearing down on you!

I am spending the summer in Belize and moving full time after the 1st of the year. CR is a bit expensive for my taste, I moved all over Florida to get away from the “keeping up with the Jones attitude” that is so prevelant here, I ran out of places to run to, that combined with everything else that is going on here…I’m out.

David M, don’t worry, Belize will let me have some of my bang bang toys!!

I like the term swashbuckler..has a nice ring to it.

belize has had it’s issues no doubt, several things that make it appealing, the government is small and really clueless (and we ALL know how much I like gubment), to me that is a positive, stay out of my way and life, things run a whole lot smoother. Two, not too many expats there (yet), and the area I am going to is San Ignacio, a long way away from the resort towns like Ambergris, Plancencia, Corozol, Caye Caulter. Belize being poor is kinda a plus in my mind, people just kinda do thier own thing there, not worried about a fancy house or fancy car, just kinda exist.

With my personality, I think I could really blaze a trail there in some sort of business, I already have some things in the works, building an expat community/development, a freshwater shrimp farm (getting seafood that far away from the cost is very cost prohibative), Talapia farm? There are tons of opportunities there, not one franchised store, no Starbucks, Buger King, Mc D, KFC, Wal mart, Home Depot, nothing! I bet a Dunkin Donuts would kill there!

The murder rates are climbing my friend…
No, actually, they aren’t. While we had a large spike in murders in the first couple of months of 2013, the numbers have gone down dramatically in March and April. The article you cite were written in January and are therefore out of date.

In fact:
Chicago Marks Lowest March Murder Rate Since 1959
http://chicagoist.com/2013/04/01/murder_rate_2013.php

Overall for 2013, we are down from the recent trend of number of murders committed through April. There were 90 through the end of April this year, which is itself significant as you can see by reading this:

“Chicago is on track to buck a nearly decade-long trend of hitting 100 homicides in the first four months of the year.

It may be cold comfort for the families of Chicago’s more than 90 homicide victims of 2013 so far, but falling short of the perennial benchmark is a small victory for in Chicago Police. The department has been working to stem killings on the street after a dramatically violent year in 2012. “
