The article was very well written and sensitive to all concerned. I agree with all the warnings about not moving to Costa Rica unless … finances, language, knowledge, and so on. It’s not about gun ownership (good or bad), and I think that was made clear in the article. It’s a side effect of the suicide that a man may be deported (and worse) from Costa Rica for having an illegal firearm. He was trying to help a stranger, and we have all had experiences when that didn’t go well. The woman would have found another way to kill herself; it’s too bad the illegal gun was handy. For everyone. As was said in the article, it’s too easy to think “how selfish” about a suicide. Depression can make people insane. Yes, it was selfish, but have some pity.
listonMemberHave you read 99 Days to Panama by John Halkyard and Harriet Halkyard? They traveled with their dog in an RV and crossed several borders, including Costa Rica’s (both ends!). We traveled by air with our dog and had no trouble at customs because we had the correct papers.
listonMemberWe purchased 100 acres of primary and secondary jungle near the Guaymi indigenous reserve (near Pavones — the surfing town) as a preserve (no development). We are affiliated with a non-profit group working to save the four species of monkeys from local extinction in southwestern Costa Rica, and eventually merge tracts of private and public land for a corridor around the Golfo Dulce connecting the reserve with the Corcovado so the animals can “follow the food” as it ripens, and so on. Please check out http://amigosdelosmonos.org/. We are currently working on another Web site to share more information about the corridor and the area.
