I never looked to see if my minutes were being used based on my phone stats. But I know if you are calling over wi-fi you should not be charged, unless they have made changes. When using the wi-fi you are not calling over their (t-mobile) network.

Make sure you are logged into a wifi network. My phone shows separate icon when in. I go to the options icon, select wifi setup, then follow the prompts, new connection, then scan for wifi network…then log on.

Here is some more info, it is confusing. I don’t pay for the at home hotspot, but was not charged when getting data/phone calls fron CR.

It’s really pretty simple. My service provider is T-Mobile and my phone is wi-fi capable.I think if you have a cell phone that enables talk over wi-fi (Iphone does not) you will be good to go, there are many wi fi phones available. Just tell T-Mobile you need a phone that can make phone calls over the wi-fi network. When I asked a service tech about this he said yes I was correct, but they were not to talk about it.

Manuel Antonio has some very nice beaches and the added bonus of being at the park. The private beach at Tulimar resort is great for swimming and is in a protected cove. Also some of the beaches in the park are wonderful! Guanacaste in general seems to have more beaches that are swimmer friendly.

Drugs and prostitution at night in Jaco, but during the day it’s fine. Even when we go there for dinner early evening it’s not been a problem, it’s the wee hours of the morning when it gets a little wild.

grif: You are like a broken record. I don’t think that the average Joe should be “investing” in Costa Rica at all. But buying a vacation home within your financial means, for pure pura vida pleasure is altogether a different proposition.

No. The dollar will always go much further in Costa Rica than in the US. And you don’t need an economics degree to know that.

If you have a wi-fi enabled phone you can call, receive/send data for free when you can pick up a wi-fi signal. I use T-Mobile with a blackberry curve. I asked a tech at t-mobile and he said this is correct, but they are not supposed to talk about it.

On our last trip I was getting my e mails, using the phone and there were no outrageous charges when I received my bill. This applies when on a wi-fi network.

My phone also works just about everywhere via regular service but yes that is expensive!

If you are moving to CR with a stable income stream from a source outside CR, why worry. In an a economic downturn your foreign money will go much further in CR. I own a real estate brokerage firm in NYC, been in the biz almost 20 years. I know a number of bankers that have lost their jobs here in NYC that are heading to places like CR, Buenos Aires where their severance, savings can last for years. Grif seems focused on short term investing in CR or flipping. Not a good idea unless you are well capitalized and very educated about the market and macro trends. Buying a second home is much more personal, be sensible. There are many opportunities in CR at many price points, do your homework. look at the great house Scott is building at a damn could price point.

We bought at the beach near Jaco 3 years ago, We don’t plan to sell, we bought what we could easily afford, no mortgage etc..Buy in CR because you love the country and the life you can live there! Go down, rent give it a test drive, life is short…live your dream or at least try. Best of luck!

Don’t fall for the ads promising big returns, wire money now etc..buy because you love it, if it turns out to be a profitable investment; that’s just icing on the cake!

The option is just not to read it, it is only a small part of what is offered here. Also I don’t think Hal can be compared to “Fox”, they did not support Ron Paul…that’s for sure! lol. Also one of the many reasons people leave the US is for political ones. Even if you are leaving for a more affordable place to retire, that can be traced back to political policy in the US that prevents many of it own citizens from a comfortable retirement.

I have found that flights from SJO to CA and SA are really pricey! I have occasionally checked all the various sites and am always surprised at the high fares.

I think most of the users of this web site are interested in buying Costa Rican properties to live in, not for speculation. Buying residential, single family properties for speculation can be very risky. We bought land and plan to build a small house to live in. Buy what you can afford, for the long term(10 years+) and you’ll be alright. This site does not appear to be aimed at buy and flippers.
Scott has been quite bearish on the financial markets for quite sometime and did better than most in calling the banking collapse before most. I also think he has presented a very transparent and thrifty project in the building of his country house. This current project clearly shows you can buy land and build a very nice house at a reasonable cost. The fact that he has listed all expenses is very helpful.

Scott: You should ad a “share” button on these articles so we can upload to our facebook sites etc…I think this will also drive many new readers to your site.

Hey David easy with the Pope! lol. If you get to Jaco Rio Oasis has a pretty good pizza, me thinks better than Wishbone.

For those who really like a good pizza(I ate at Patsy’s original Harlem location last night! yum!!) Buy a pizza stone and do it at home, very easy and tasty! You can often just buy the dough from a local pizzeria or make a few batches and freeze it. I season crushed tomatoes, use straight from the can, mozzarella and your favorite toppings. Make sure to preheat the oven with the stone inside. You can use a metal mesh pizza holder to put the stretched out dough on, then drop slide that onto the stone if you don’t want to deal with a peel.

I have been to CIMA a few times myself, best hospital experience ever. Even the food in the restaurant was quite decent. I certainly saved a few thousand dollars and the care and personal attention from the doctors was numero uno!
