Roark I know you love to torment all the “liberals” with Limbaugh style sound bites, but Obama is not a socialist. And conservation is the single best thing we can all do to free ourselves from the shackles of oil. In socialist countries like Venezuela gas is cheap because the government sets the price. In capitalist countries traders set the price of oil, offering us all the potential for more may drive the price down in the short term, but if we don’t learn to conserve we will be back to square one sooner rather than later. Conservation is good for everyone and our living planet, only the sly-est of politicians would politicize it.

I guess what I was trying to say is buy a house for your enjoyment, especially a vacation home. When you compare owning your home with all the associated costs to maintain it including property taxes and mortgage debt it really doesn’t add up to such a great deal. I look at it as forced savings, you are compelled to keep chipping away at the mortgage debt and you hope for a little appreciation. But when you sell after 20 years and put your “gain” in the bank, you may be in for a surprise if you add up all the interest you paid alone to the bank, never mind taxes etc. And if you live in an area where you could rent a house for say half the cost of ownership(and no property taxes,up-keep, water bill etc), and were a disciplined investor/saver, of course you would be way ahead of the game. Unless you have paid cash for you house you don’t own it untill you pay off the bank anyway…

Wow Brad and Hal in the same thread….I hear horse’s? lol. Lets all take it easy with this airplane thing as it’s apparently a pretty safe way to get around, you really don’t hear of to many people pulling guns, pens or box cutters relative to the large number of flights everyday. Quite frankly I’m more afraid of a hydraulic breakdown or a bird flying into an engine on take off. I live in Washington Heights, NYC(not exactly the burbs) and really have never felt the need to arm myself, I guess I would consider owning a gun if I lived out in the boondocks. I don’t really get the uber pro gun crowd or the uber anti-gun crowd, you both sound a little wacky to me. Hal I would suggest you ban alcohol on those gun packing flights. It is a bit funny to think that Hal and archie Bunker have the same idea regarding keeping planes safe, remember when he suggested that you hand out guns at the beginning of each flight, then collect them after you have landed 🙂 You can probably find that episode of “All in the Family” on you tube.

Real estate speculation is always a tricky endeavor and if you’re an investor trying to make a short term profit it can get even more difficult. This should be left to professionals or those with very deep pockets that can afford it if there timing is off. Buying for the long term and because you love what and where you’re buying usually works out. I have been in the Real estate biz for over 15 years and just like in stock market rallies and declines it is very difficult to gage where you’re at in the midst of it all. Sitting here now it seems like it was a no brain-er to short financials over the last two years…if I would have I would be living the pura vida life in CR right now! But again trying to figure it out day to day is a different story, hard enough for the pro’s let alone for us “amateurs”!

When we were spending time in Nosara a lot of folks I met did not want the road paved. They are not looking to see Nosara go the way Tamarindo has. But boy if you don’t have a sturdy 4×4 what should take 15 or 20 minutes to cover takes an hour and a half!

We always come to that same conclusion as well about a holiday here in the US. We live in NYC and even to go to Long Island we would pay about $2000 per week just for a house rental and that would not put us on the beach. We can fly to Costa Rica for approx. $800 dollars round trip(2) and stay on the beach in an efficiency apartment for about $50 dollars per night in Play Hermosa/Jaco.
