MemberI have looked into this as well and agree with Scott only denque is something you must take some precautions for. I am like Scott rarely am bitten by mosquitoes, on the other hand if there is one within a 100 miles of where we are my girlfriend will get bitten, my daughter has the same problem. Good bug spray and netting at night if you are in an area with a lot of mosquitoes and appropriate dress at night, although the ones that transmit dengue like to bite you during the day. I have known two people that have had dengue in C.R. one a tourist in my hotel and the other the owner of the hotel(she had gotten it 10 years prior). Also the bug has to bite an infected person and then bite you to infect you, so in less congested areas you may be safer? Not all of them are carriers of the virus.

MemberThis place looks pretty wild, there is a yoga teacher I know of who sent me this link awhile ago. She teaches and lives in NYC and does retreats down here.

MemberDavid,
I would love to hear a little of your story regarding why you choose to move to costa rica.Keith

MemberThere is a private clinic in Jaco and Los suenos called C.A.R.E., Good doctors, good luck and let us know if it is dengue.

MemberGarza thats the place, we did the same just north of Jaco and the fish were a plenty!

MemberThere is a very interesting article in I believe the June issue of Fortune magazine on baby boomers and retirement. In my opinion there may be an inverse relationship regarding the U.S. market and Costa Ricas. With pensions near non excistent in the U.S. and 401 k plans looking more like 101 k plans the low cost of buying a house and living in places like Costa Rica should make it an appealing retirement destination.

MemberSurf fishing is not very common and I have had no luck at it. There is an excellent column in The http://www.ticotimes.net on fishing in general and I believe you can e mail or phone him with questions. There is a small town just before you get into Nosara where I have read about a surf fishing contest and the ocean is fairly calm as there is a protected cove. Another idea may be sport fishing from a boat, it can be quite expensive, however we usually find a local guy with a boat and for about $100-$200 dollars you can go out for 4 hours and catch sailfish, wahoo, rooster fish and barracuda. River fishing for tarpoon is very popular and there is also good fishing in lake Arenal. I also had a really hard time finding a bait & tackle shop actually, I couldn’t find one so you may want to inquire before coming down or better bring your own gear. Good luck!

Memberyes…there is a 4×4 rental company recommended on this site, but they only rent small ones.
*Lotus
Memberif you ae refering to my posts i’m speaking in general about the rental process etc..

MemberThanks for the insights, in the past I have used my platinum card to provide the additional insurance but there are limitations when you read the policy. One of them being they do not cover you if an accident occurs on a dirt or gravel road…and then if there is an accident that is not covered by the mandatory insurance, the rental company charges you card for the estimated damages and you present this to your credit card company…a bit scary!! To date we have not had any problems and of course you sleep well when taking the “full” coverage, but it s so darn expensive!! We are usually there for a month or more at a time and the cost of a rental car with full coverage can be half the cost of the whole trip! We love having the car so we can go when and where we want at the drop of a dime, but since we stay on the beach we are considering forgoing the car and just taking a taxi for short trips and just renting a car if we plan on exploring.

MemberThe last time I was there(December) I was told by dollar that the government was cracking down on collecting the airport tax. And that basically there are no rental car agencies at the airport they all take you to there remote location, hence the tax must be paid. Other times in the past they have waved the tax. Just had a thought, I guess if they shuttle you over you must pay, if you get there on your own you don’t..perhaps? David can you give your thoughts on the full coverage insurance issue or take the minimum required by law and get the additional coverage from your credit card etc..It seems there is no full coverage offered by the government but the car rental agencies take on the risk themselves if you pay the higher rental rate. Also what do you do if you own a car there, what type of coverage is offered?

MemberAre you replying to the right post? this company is in Costa Rica and I was told prices to build run approx. $35-$55 dollars a sqft. depending on the level of finish you want.
*Lotus
MemberI have not been to Jaco since the end of December and I know things are changing rapidly. How far south of Jaco are you talking is this huge super market off the Costa Nera? The only huge super market in the area is the new one in Jaco as well as the Mas x Menos.

MemberWow i’m honored! lol…All the spread sheets in the world won’t fill hotel rooms and when others have “speculated” as Trevor is doing he got his panties in quite a twist!! I am bright enough to know of course this is just an opinion, but I qualify it based on a 14 year succesful career in real estate in New York and numerous trips over the last five years to the Central Pacific. I am also in the process of building a home there. I am not “attacking” his project, but the whole point of forums like this is to express our opinions, and Trevor not only expresses his, he venomously has gone after some of the others building in the area, these builders have not attacked him. In the past he was quite a frequent poster on this site, chimeing in on all sorts of things with his qualification being that he is living here. I truly wish the project and it’s buyers well, but even Trevors childish and malicious attacks won’t change my mind about his advertising claims about rental income, like I said I have spent quite a bit of time down there and there are plenty of fine hotels to stay in or even better you can stay in a lovely place on the beach in Playa Hermosa http://www.casapuravida.com for about $60 bucks a night with a pool and ocean view as well as a full kitchen. And by the way i’m not a woman, why he would assume that I don’t know…?I’m sure he’ll have a cheeky remark for that Lol..
