If you do a search on this site you will find a very good article written by one of it’s members. Interestingly enough they draw the same conclusion as you, though I believe they offer some advice on where to look. It seems the issue is that these used car dealers get these cars from the US after they have been written off as salvage by the insurance company.

We just put off a trip because of the dengue outbreaks. Not too concerned about ourselves, however we have a 9 month old and just felt the risk was not worth it. Any medical people here that could comment to my concerns regarding our daughter?

    Gracias.

Anyone still buying gold? If you bought equities/real estate in 2009 you would be one giant step closer to being able to make a move to Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador etc. Today the sky is not falling, the present moment is a wonderful place to act/live in.

Why shouldn’t “gay marriage” be legal in a democratic/socialist nation? The government should protect civil rights, not legislate who can marry and who can’t. This is about simple human rights. The only opposition to same sex marriage comes from religious beliefs. Let’s keep the church and state separate. Believe what you wish, worship whom and how you wish. Protect the rights of consenting adults to marry, love and be who they were born to be.

Curious how they are able to pay such high rates? Generally speaking high rate of return=higher rate of risk. Do they offer an explanation?

I would stay in Play Hermosa, just a few km’s South of Jaco. Try Costenera, right on the ocean, ask for AC if you want it. Run by a very nice Italian couple Stefano and Nada. I think rooms start at $45 a night/clean but basic.

There is also The Surf Inn (brand new and beautiful with a restaurant on the roof $$$http://surfinnhermosa.com/

Los Olas is a bit more geared towards surfers, but you can get a cool A-Frame room on the beach. Also a great small restaurant on the beach. Great banana pancakes!

There are a number of other hotels along the “strip” most in the $40-$60 a night range.

It’s great to read a lively discussion about eating and food on here! What we eat obviously creates the base of our health.

I have followed a plant based diet for 30 years, eaten what they call today super foods during this time as well. The “mainstream” has adopted many ideas about diet that were considered extremist, “hippie” in the late 70’s until just recently.

I remember a conversation with the “dietitian” at NY Hospital in 1983 where my mother-in-law was for kidney failure (caused by blood pressure meds she had been on for many years).

I began to discuss diet with her, she quickly became annoyed and told me “What you eat has no relation to disease”; I think she may have even implied on health? We have come a long way.

Just factoring in the number of diabetics (one of the biggest drags on our health care system) and obesity the costs for treatment of the disease as well as subsequent diseases related to these conditions is staggering.

Still we mostly want to treat the disease and not focus on the cause, not much money in keeping people healthy:)

The high cost of healthcare is directly tied to these preventable conditions (perhaps we can’t stop all of the cases, but I think it is agreed we can prevent most).

The eating of these awful foods is akin to being addicted to drugs and the big food companies know this.

The high fat/sugar/salt/chemical laden foods become addictive and like a cigarette smoker/opiate user, the consumer of these products can’t get off them easily even though it is killing them, making them obese.

This is why most diets fail, we need detox centers where we focus on the emotional and physical aspects of this “addiction”. They have you hooked and like most addicts…you are in denial.

The big processed food conglomerates may be worse than big pharma. At least some of the drugs developed can be useful (maravilla may disagree:))

Keep it simple: Eat fresh foods. It’s better for you and the environment. Next topic; the destructive effects factory style farming have on the earth. Look into the pollution caused by pig, cattle and chicken factory operations.

IMHO this is something to get fired up about, even more so than worrying about hoarding gold for “the collapse”.
Yes, Lotus123, making nut milk is just that easy, but I caution you to pour off the soak water, and blend the nuts with fresh water. The soak water from nuts, especially almonds, as well as beans and seeds for sprouting, contain, along with all those nutrients, high levels of oxalic acids, which interfere with the digestion of proteins. Better to use the soak water for your plants, and get all the nutrition you can from that good, fresh food. Salud!
Thanks cabs for that info and it goes along
With what I once believed. The recipe that came with my new macerating juicer said to use the water the almonds were soaked in (Huron slow juicer).

Very easy to make your own almond milk as well. Soak for 8 hours (you can then blanch with hot water and the skins come off between your fingers) then either blend or run through a macerating style juicer (like a Huron)with the soaked water. Then strain through cheese cloth. You can also do this with cashews or mix them.

Either way, “Soaking your nuts” before eating is tasty and healthy!:D

I would also add that I think David has been an excellent moderator. He remains civil, balanced even when others are “less than kind”. It’s no surprise David that you handle yourself so well in the wild west of anonymous online forums with all of your previous experience. Lets have a diversity of opinions but try and be civil, respectful with one another. I think we get to really see the true character of the individual when they post under the shroud of anonymity of a websites discussion board.

Some great thoughts here on eating. And with medical costs what they are you want to stay healthy. I have been a vegetarian since 17 (now 49). Maravilla offers all of us some great ideas whether we live in Costa Rica or elsewhere. Gracias!

Maybe your perception of truth is wrong. But it is very difficult for people to accept this; they think they are their story. They would rather think “I” am on the right path and everyone else is wrong. Even the man that was eaten, was it wrong? No need to label everything as truth or untruth. Just look deeply.
