Imperial Silver on ice, lime juice, salted rim= Costa Rican Michelada. Best enjoyed seated at Reggae Bar, Playa Negra, Cahuita!!!
lyncotaParticipantGreetings from the Caribbean coast!
@sweikert925: Like the views and the persona. Maybe lacking in the style points!
Actually, I have felt for quite a while that the opinions voiced on this site were way too conservative for me. Unlike many of the folks that post here, I am leaving the States not because I disagree with the current state of affairs there, I just want to be someplace warm that’s not Florida. And on the Caribbean coast, there is little need for air conditioning. Just a ceiling fan once in a while. And the Caja…..glad the US in going in that direction. It’s the future, whether you like it or not.lyncotaParticipantGood news! Just checked my corporation tax on-line and it has been changed back to “inactive”, and now shows the correct amount due.
lyncotaParticipantOur attorney was relieved that we hadn’t paid it. So we are proceeding with option 2. Will keep you posted on progress (if any!).
lyncotaParticipantThere is an article in today’s AM Costa Rica regarding corporation taxes for some companies ( like ours) changing from inactive to active:
http://www.amcostarica.com/
The fix looks fairly simple, but who knows how long it will take? Our attorney seemed to know about this issue when we talked to her in February.
Glad we only have one corporation to worry about.lyncotaParticipantNo, Imxploring. Not the case because we had the books issued as well. AM COSTA RICA recently ran an article about corporation taxes which focused on the attachment of liens for non payment after 3 years. At the end it does mention that many expats are complaining about their corporations being changed to active, but had no explanation as to the reason, only speculation that it may be a ploy to squeeze more money out of expats.
lyncotaParticipantWe are currently in CR, and have met with a local attorney regarding the change in status of our corporation (inactive to active). She said that all corporations were changed over to active, and rather than try to sort out which should be inactive, the customs agency is just waiting for the owners to contact them to make the correction. I think she used the word “chaos” at some point. Anyways, she said we could go to Limon ourselves to take care of it, or she would do it for a small fee. We opted for the small fee. She said it would take about 2 weeks and she would get back in touch with us. We could then pay the tax ourselves at the bank as usual, which we will do when we return this summer. Anyone else get feed back on the corporation tax issue? I know some other forum members were planning on checking out what was going on during February visits as well.
lyncotaParticipantI feel fortunate to live within driving distance to 3 major airports in the Northeast, so we always are able to pick and choose our flights to Costa Rica.
COPA and TACA are both great. I would stay away from Spirit. Beware of hidden fees! They charge for carry on.lyncotaParticipantWe’ll be returning in February, and plan to meet with an attorney then. I’ll let you know if we hear anything in the meantime.
lyncotaParticipantWe’ve been visiting our property in Cahuita regularly and for extended stays for the past 6 years. We love the Caribbean side of CR. It’s culturally different from the rest of the country, has fewer expats from the US, a very relaxed vibe. Very lush with no dry/rainy season. Retiring in 2015. Can’t wait!
lyncotaParticipantOf course I didn’t pay but we’ll have to sort it out somehow from theUS as we had to leave today. My husband thinks it may have to do with neglecting to reregister the corporation after 5 years. We purchased our property about 6 years ago. Any thoughts on that Costaricabill?
lyncotaParticipantI am reactivating this thread. In response to the original post, I just went to pay my annual corporation tax at BCR. The last 2 years, no problem. Both times, I payëd the reduced inactive corporation rate. This year, for some reason, they have us listed as an äctive corporation and say that we owe the entire approx 400.00. I am getting nowhere with the links listed when I plug in my corporation number. Any ideas as to what is going on- Thanks.
lyncotaParticipantAgree, Scott! And Talamanca does not usually “roll over” upon command:

lyncotaParticipantHere is a floor covering option that you may want to explore. Laurel makes beautiful things!

I would definitely leave the wool rugs at home. However, you will want something cushy underfoot for say, the kitchen area where you might do a lot of standing. The tile and wood floors are very hard! -
