Hmmmmmmm. So you all move to a country that has a government plan for health insurance, which provides it’s residents with at least a basic health care plan. Go figure.
May 18, 2013 at 12:30 am in reply to: “If I die in Costa Rica…” How do I get my body back to the U.S.? #173492lyncotaParticipantThanks to all regarding this thread. This is the type of dialogue that most of us that subscribe to this forum are looking for. Well… the humor, too, I guess.
lyncotaParticipantI have a very basic TMobile touch screen phone (quad band) that I am able to use when I visit CR. To avoid tremendous long distance/international roaming fees, I had TMobile provide the code to “unlock” the phone, and I purchase a Kolbe SIM card at the airport when I arrive. Of course, I then have a Costa Rican cell phone number. This works well for my visits that run from 9 days to 6 weeks.
lyncotaParticipantThought an update to the original post in this thread might be in order. Much has happened over the last few days! This is important news for residents of Talamanca!
lyncotaParticipantAnd where are these folks staying and what are they doing? I read all the time that hotel occupancy is down in all regions.
lyncotaParticipant
I filled out the quote info as well. They’re supposed to respond within 24 hours. We’re still looking for a catastrophic type policy to cover us when are in the US for up to 6 months of the year until we reach 65.
Rather disappointed. An agent did eventually respond, promised a quote, but said that because we weren’t planning on making a move for about 2 years, we wouldn’t be hearing back from him any time soon. That was a few weeks ago. We’re trying to make a plan!!!lyncotaParticipantI filled out the quote info as well. They’re supposed to respond within 24 hours. lyncotaParticipantThanks for the replies. I will give them a call today. I’ll post what I find out!
lyncotaParticipantThis is of interest to my husband and me. We are planning on living in CR for @6 mos. of the year when my husband reaches 62 in @ 2 and 1/2 years. Had originally planned on being full time residents (we have a home on the Caribbean side), but circumstances have changed and we will need to spend time in the US due to family responsibilities. Health insurance is the big issue for us. Of course we can afford the CAJA and planned on getting some type of supplemental coverage, BUT when we are in the US….we got nothin’. We had checked into some of the Global Coverage companies, and it looks like we would be paying @5000 per year as long as we don’t spend greater than 6 months out of the year in the US and provided we stay healthy until we apply! Curious to know if the ARCR policy would cover us when we are in the US. Also, I had contacted the site’s “insurance expert” a few weeks ago, and haven’t gotten a reply yet.
lyncotaParticipantI reread TACA’s pet policy and am now further confused. One place says they fly pets as cargo, not baggage, on regular flights. Another place on the TACAcargo page states that they do not transport pets from North America. I think I would consider American, too! I follow the pet transport threads because we will be bringing our cattle dog when we move in a few years!
lyncotaParticipantFYI, TACA will not transport animals on a regular flight, but will transport them on their cargo flights.
lyncotaParticipantScott, I appreciate that you saw fit to reprint the original thread about this sad event. I was not into reading about the “blood and guts” at all. I belong to other discussion groups that focus more on news from the Caribbean coast where there has been much information printed about the recent murder of a tourist in Puerto Viejo. The vast majority of the comments in those forums have been condolences to the family of the victim and calls to area residents to organize to improve the security situation. There is also information that family has posted with a link to a website in honor of this wonderful man with instructions on how to donate to a reward fund to assist in finding the killer. These are all positive things that have come from giving interested people a forum to exchange ideas and information about events, even the ones that make us uncomfortable.
lyncotaParticipantWe have a home in Cahuita, and one of our neighbors keeps peacocks. They freely roam the neighborhood like the rest of the poultry around there. They must be doing well because they appear to be multiplying! However, my mother-in-law (who is 79 y/o), said to me one morning, “I’m going out today and I’m going to find me just the right sized coconut. And I’m going to kill that damn bird when it starts to squawk tonight”. Yes, they are very noisy!
lyncotaParticipantFrankly, this is a custom that I can’t wrap my head around, and I figure that it is a main factor in why I have contracted Noro-type illnesses on a few of my visits. I’ll go with the more frequent emptying of “the tank”! Tank you very much!
lyncotaParticipantDefinitely check out the Caribbean coast. The website http://puertoviejosatellite.com has alot of info about the area. I know there is an International School in Cahuita if the public school system is not to your liking and there are other options in Puerto Viejo as well.
