maravillaMember
why would anyone want to do this??????????
maravillaMemberIf CR voted FOR this, then I am proud of CR for standing up to the bullies — and surely there was some bullying going on because CR has become little more than a puppet state for the US. Good for CR for doing the right thing!!
maravillaMemberwe got hit with a garbage collection tax, which was imposed about the same time that we had a derrumbe and there was no way the garbage truck could get to the pick up point. we only generate one tiny bag of trash every week and that is mostly other plastic bags, so we took care of our own trash for that entire year. i argued with the muni that i didn’t want to pay the tax because i hadn’t used the service, and lo and behold, they knocked it off my bill — which had nearly doubled my $78 a year normal taxes!! jajaja
maravillaMemberwrapped in bed sheets? how about a strait-jacket?
maravillaMembertwo years ago they were doing the same thing — re-assessing values all over the country but not in my district. just because it happens elsewhere doesn’t mean it happens where i live. i’m going to the muni tomorrow to find out if there have been increases. they are always so helpful there, so i will see what they tell me. i looked at the website and for the life of my couldn’t figure out how you would calculate anything!!!
maravillaMemberretract your claws, vickie — you’re beginning to sound pretty ridiculous. i always love how people who don’t know what they’re talking about are so quick to condemn someone who has done the research and knows the facts. do you even speak spanish??? i’ll bet your don’t. that would be so typical, wouldn’t it?
maravillaMemberi pay my prop taxes every year in january. i guess i will just go to the muni and ask them what they are for this year and see if they tell me i have to do a re-eval. i can’t imagine that i do, but hey, who knows?
maravillaMemberis this a new article by the doc or the old one? in any event, i couldn’t find it on the main page. where should i look?
maravillaMemberi don’t get your point, quite frankly. either you do not know the history of the isthmus for the last 100 years or you haven’t spoken to enough Ticos about these issues. Nobody is blaming ME per se; and as for MY, yes, quite a lot of Ticos know what they did here and how abusive they were to workers. How do I know this? We published an entire issue on bananas, and during our investigations, we routinely queried farmers and non-farmers about UFC. you can see that issue here:
maravillaMembermost of the hill towns are, well, hilly. in the main square you will find some flat surfaces, but once you leave the plaza it’s all up and down.
maravillaMembergiven what the US has done in Latin America in the last 80 years, why would anyone think they would welcome us with open arms? Memory is long in these countries and every Tico I have ever met has some awareness of the dastardly deeds committed on the isthmus in the name of greed and control. i live in the campo where we have more farmers than lawyers. but i have heard the same refrain since i set foot in this country: they tolerate us; they don’t particularly trust us; and they are nice to us because that is their nature, but it is a rarity that a gringo will be accepted into the inner circle of Tico life — esp if you don’t speak spanish. i am married to a Latin — none of the Ticos i know regard me as a typical gringa, and we have many Tico friends from all walks of life — rich influential politicos and poor dairy farmers — and they all say the same thing: they don’t really like gringos; they just put up with them, and they resent our attitude of entitlement and superiority. there are exceptions, but those are a rarity. and i’m with Davidd on the people issue: i’ve met some real dousies here in Costa Rica, people I didn’t even know could exist in my other world — liars, scammers, grifters, b.s. artists, and downright crooks. you only need to get burned by one of these creeps to have your faith in humanity tested to the limit.
maravillaMemberyou get used to it, and your body adjusts. now it seems totally normal to get up at the crack of dawn and be ready to go to bed by 8. it’s actually a much healthier rhythm for your body and mind. i thought it was odd at first, too, after the long long days we had in colorado, but now this seems normal to me.
maravillaMemberthat stuff should be called Death on a Bun! however did people get to the point where they stopped eating real food in favor of food-like products? i look at the changes in costa rica in the last 8 years, and it’s really quite disturbing. i happened to catch a 2 minute segment of a cooking show on the TV at the bank the other day, and they were promoting Splenda, Numar, and Maggi — all really bad chemicals, but those are the corporate sponsors here. so of course, that is what people choose because they are led to believe they are good products when nothing could be farther from the truth. soon Costa Rica will be as fat as America where 65% of the population is overweight or obese. Poor CAJA!!
maravillaMemberand along with the American companies they import bad spending habits, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. the US is hardly a good role model. i honestly do not know how anyone can eat at McDonalds. it’s not even meat they are serving you — only 15% of that patty is actual meat; the rest? who the hell knows? GMO soy fillers, and all kinds of other stuff you probably wouldn’t eat if you knew what they were.
maravillaMemberoh, yeah, i forgot about the 6 p.m. curfew! jajaja by the time it gets dark here, which is 6 p.m. every day of the year, you are ready for bed! life is exhausting here, and there are so many things to do. it’s not like you only have to clean once a week. now if i had 5 kids, i wouldn’t have time for all the other stuff i do.
