It IS against the law. And the amount of documentation they require is like jumping through hoops of fire.
With their Know Thy Customer program, it just doesn’t make sense that they would give accounts to these people, but hey, what the hell do i know? what did they use as a tax ID number. you don’t get an account ever without that.
November 7, 2012 at 7:59 pm in reply to: New Traffic Law Requires Cedula for Driver’s License? #200357maravillaMemberhow is that even possible if they don’t have SS numbers?
November 7, 2012 at 5:35 pm in reply to: New Traffic Law Requires Cedula for Driver’s License? #200355maravillaMemberthey sent me one newsletter with a headline that read “We were the ones to tell you about Costa Rica, now we’re telling you about Ecuador.” soooooo, i wrote them a letter and thanked them for screwing up this country and then moving on to virgin terroritory where that, too, will wind up like every other place they touted.
maravillaMemberspare us. please. and just keep gobbling your GMOs.
November 7, 2012 at 1:29 pm in reply to: Starting a painting firm – is that a valid business idea? #200957maravillaMemberno bank accounts, no permits, no driver’s licenses WITHOUT a cedula. whooo hooo. we’re getting more and more like the US every day.
maravillaMemberyou can sign and share this petition if you really care about what happens regarding the GMO issue in Costa Rica.
maravillaMemberyes, he has his own equipment, brings his own gas, face gear, etc. i live just north of san ramon, but i think that he told me once that these are standard rates based on the increases every year. i’ve never checked. i just pay him what he asks and assume it’s correct.
November 7, 2012 at 12:20 am in reply to: New Traffic Law Requires Cedula for Driver’s License? #200353maravillaMemberi was thinking about these new rules and i really don’t know why anyone is complaining. i mean, all i’ve heard for 8 years is how screwed up CR is, this that or the other thing is ridiculous, laws aren’t enforced, blah blah blah, and how things would be better if they were more like the US.
well, now they are. congrats. all the people who whined got just what they wanted.
until this new set of rules, you could get a bank account with just your passport, same with a DL, and you could start a business. you sure as hell can’t do those things in the States either without proper documentation. imagine some mexican immigrant walking into a Manhattan bank and trying to open an account with his passport. HA! so with each new law they pass, CR is becoming more and more like the first world country we all left. now we even had street addresses, for god’s sake. should’ve left well enough alone. now look what we’ve got. sheesh.maravillaMemberthey don’t have an office here anymore, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to dump GMOs into the marketplace under the auspices of CAFTA (the KISS OF DEATH!). if you’re buying any packaged food from the states that contains corn, soy, corn oil, soy oil (and almost every single product has one of those things!) then you are consuming GMOs. but i’ve discovered since this battle started that most people don’t really care what they eat or even the consequences of it. it’s us tree huggers and health food nuts who are behind the anti-GMO agenda. i don’t eat the tamales here because they are made from masa that comes from gmo corn that was shipped in. ugh but i hear it is going well in california with lots of support, and all the online newspapers with whom i have a relationship are all working on stories covering today’s protest in SJO. keep your fingers crossed.
maravillaMemberi pay my gardner C3000 – C3500/hr for using a weed whacker. otherwise he gets C1200 an hour.
maravillaMemberThis is the article that appeared in CR News this morning.

i hope they kick monsanto out of here. we don’t want no stinkin’ gmo corn in costa rica. look what it did to mexico. ugh greedy, nasty, horrible company is what monsatan is. they were just kicked out of india, so there is hope.
November 6, 2012 at 3:46 pm in reply to: New Traffic Law Requires Cedula for Driver’s License? #200351maravillaMemberditto. . . ditto. . . ditto.
i’ve lived in other places where gringo culture took over and it was very sad. personally, i have no problems with any of these new rules. and finally, after years of grousing at each other, you and i have found common ground. JAJAJAJA
maravillaMembernot only is the grass not greener, but for 6 months a year it is brown!! jajaja
and i really am amused by the ones who want to come and start a business. yes, it has worked for some, and for others it has been the formula to lose every single penny they have. sigh
maravillaMembermore and more, i see posts from people wanting to move here and work. that tells me they know very little about this country because that should be the very first thing they research. on one retirement website they recommend that you don’t come here with any expectation of earning $1.00, that you have approx $2000 a month in income, and at least $25,000 – $50,000 in the bank for emergencies. so many people come here completely unprepared and then wonder why living here is so hard.
November 6, 2012 at 2:49 am in reply to: New Traffic Law Requires Cedula for Driver’s License? #200349maravillaMemberthe question is whether or not you can renew that license if you don’t have a cedula.
