Women are second class citizens in the US. If they weren’t, she wouldn’ve have had to fight for women’s rights. I find that I receive a higher level of respect as a woman in Costa Rica (or Mexico) than I do in the US. That might be an erroneous perception, but I have always felt that way and I never get that feeling in the States.

That was a good analogy about citizenship and residency. I’m still tryiing to figure out why anyone would think they’d become a second class citizen — I think I’ve read every book there is on Costa Rica and I never saw THAT mentioned. Did I miss something. I guess most people think of Third World countries as patriarchal, but as Scott mentioned CR is matriarchal, so I’ll bet women wield a lot of power in CR — at least behind closed doors! LOL

We are a nation of consumers. They can hike the price of oil to $100 a barrel and that will not stop the Hummer people from filling their gas tanks, but it will certainly put a crimp in most other’s lifestyles. The population of the US is a tiny fraction of the whole world, but we consume massive amounts of everything — from energy to goods. We are a throwaway society and the only one I know of that has to rent a storage unit to pack away the stuff that will no longer fit in the house. We are gluttonous and I think we should ban those monstrous SUVs outright and flood the market with Smart Cars!

You said you received an insult as an answer to your question, but I’ve read your question several times and it certainly does appear that you know very little about Costa Rica or what is needed to live here legally. I’m wondering where you got the information that you would not become a citizen unless your husband died. I’ve never heard of THAT! And no, you cannot apply for citizenship — but you can apply for legal residency either as a pensionado or a rentista. You would have to live here ten years, be fluent in the language, and meet other stringent requirements to even begin application for citizenship. And why would you think you would be a second rate citizen in the first place? It seems that whatever information you gathered about Costa Rica was in fact wrong information, or at the very least, misguided information.

Petrol has always been that high in Europe and the UK. Let’s all forget this CR business and move to Venezuela where gas is TWELVE CENTS a gallon!! And they have more than enough for the next 200 years, unless of course, the US invades and attempts to assassinate Chavez again. It just hit $2.70 in my area, so we minimize the use of two cars and don’t drive around aimlessly. And because we are 7 miles to the nearest anything, you can use up a lot of gas getting to the market.

Just prior to 9/11 oil was $23 a barrel (if I remember correctly). I read an article on AOL about how if oil hits $100 a barrel, the housing market will bottom out because too much of a person’s disposable income will go towards energy costs. In fact, high gas prices is impacting our ability to sell our house because we don’t live near the city where most people must go to work to afford a house in my area.

Oh no, Mr. Bill, that is NOT good news. I can only imagine what it will go up to by the time I get around to booking our flights for July what with oil at $70+ a barrel and no ceiling in sight.

The person actually said THAT to you? WOW! That’s a pretty manipulative statement, and speaks volumes about their sales tactics.

That could work but only if you have dual citizenship and another passport from some other country. But even renouncing your citizenship isn’t that easy from what I’ve heard.

The best perk would be not having to file taxes at all and if you meet certain requirements, such as SS being your only source of income, then you can opt out of the game. Sure would be nice to disconnect from the system — that’s what I’m striving for.

Purchasing property will not allow you to buy into the healthcare system. That is based on your having legal residency status.

You’re kidding, right? It ain’t ever going to happen and certainly not just b/c you bailed out to live in Costa Rica. All worldwide income must be reported. All bank accounts to which you are signatory or beneficiary must be reported if the aggregate sum is $10,000 or more. The only way you won’t have to pay taxes is if you are collecting SS and that is your only source of income and it is below a certain amount; in this case, you won’t even have to file a 1040, but don’t think you can hide income in Costa Rica. They have all kinds of ways of checking up on you to see if you are living above your means and reporting X amount of income.

That’s for sure! Plus the traveling time is about double what it is from any other airline hub, say, Houston or Atlanta.

I read Andrew’s account of his trip to the Caribbean side. Sounds like he and Beth really enjoyed it. You;ll have a great time staying at Angel Valley Farm — with any luck I should be moved down there by then!
