and why should you be concerned? do you buy ANYTHING that is processed or packaged? if so, it probably contains one of these ingredients: HFCS, corn, soy, or beet sugar. all of those things are GMO without any labeling at all. does your soft drink contain HFCS? do you eat sugarless foods that might contain aspartame, which is also a GMO? these foods are prevalent in Costa Rica. if you want your entire food supply to be narrowed down to just the things that monsanto and the other companies will control, you and the rest of us (sadly) will only have about 6 or 7 things to eat. i care too much about what i put into my body to ignore this issue and when i think of all the people i know with mystery illnesses, gut problems esp leaky gut, migraines, autism and a host of other ailments that are now being linked to GMOs, i really don’t think it’s an issue that we can ignore, even IF Costa Rica is not growing gmo crops. please don’t turn this isn’t an argument about who is right and who is wrong — the science and the research speak for itself if only people would take the time to review the info instead of parroting the propaganda.

that’s the propaganda, but it isn’t the truth. the yields are not bigger, and they need to use more powerful pesticides because the bt stuff isn’t effective, so basically they have not accomplished anything. gmo’s will not save the world from starvation — there is plenty of food; in fact there is a food surplus. if you would take the time to watch the video and become familiar with the lies they have been spreading, you wouldn’t have to raise these issues because they are not real issues — they are what those chemical companies want you to believe. and now there are more virulent pests that are immune to the bt crops, so they’ve actually created a bigger problem than they had before.

and for anyone who thinks those of us who live in Costa Rica are immune to this issue, please read this letter from the organic consumer’s association. this is a battle that all of us must fight. it’s just that simple.

we did not have terminator seeds, or round-up ready seeds, or seeds that contain their own pesticide and toxins that are potentially harmful to the planet, animals, and to humans. what monsanto is doing is radically different that what has been done in the past. remember when they came out with the GMO tomato and it fell flat in the market because nobody would buy it? well, those of us who care about our health and the health of every other living thing, do not want what monsanto is offering and neither do a lot of other countries. what they are doing now has never been done before and it has never been proven to be totally safe either, in fact, it is quite the opposite and you can watch the video to learn the ways in which these seeds are potentially harmful.

and this is why customs should confiscate any seeds brought in. that doesn’t seem cheap though for a kilo of corn. if it were me, and i knew who this person was, i would report him to the ministerio of agriculture.

it probably wasn’t GMO if they are not allowed to import it. if it was Bt corn you probably would’ve gotten sick.

they’re always at it and they won’t stop until they control the world’s food supply. if you’re inclined to give me grief about this issue, save your breath.

i would definitely fall in love with costa rica if someone took me to los suenos!!! just like i fell in love with monte carlo when i went to Hotel de Paris — at $350 a night, what’s not to love??? but there is something for everyone’s budget here; that’s the good news. and david is right — an organized tour might be a good thing, and some wandering around time after that.

peso comes from the verb pesar — to weigh, but it also means sorrow and remorse. it all depends on the usage.

i just paid $5000 for a 20 year old car. in the States that car would’ve been $500.

you will have to pay import duties and taxes equal to about 80% of the value of the car.

why don’t you ask your bank how long this transaction will take? normally, it is no more than two or three days, sometimes less.

loraine nailed it. don’t come here expecting to find a man. the gringos your age all want some hot chica in her 20’s. the ticos have wives, mistresses, and a host of other women with whom they dally. many of the single women i know say there is a pitiful selection of men in the 50 – 60 age group — most are unhealthy, have unrealistic expectations, and are looking for someone to take care of them. (okay, i am ducking now!!!) we have 75 micro-climates in costa rica. there is something for everyone, but there are also many issues to consider — legal residency being the top priority. but do come check it out. learn spanish, and who knows what will await you. where’s that swash-buckling Diego when we need him! off on his yacht with those cute Cubanas!! jajaja
