Equity Trust Company and its affiliate, Sterling Trust Company, are retirement account custodians I use that offer self-directed IRA and 401k accounts that can invest in real estate. Another big player in the self-directed retirement account arena is Pensco Trust Company. If you do a web search for “self directed IRA” or “self directed 401k” you will find bunches of custodian firms for self directed retirement accounts that will act as custodians and administrators for real estate investing as well as many other investments that the conventional administrators like Fidelity won’t do. They have different fee and cost structures, so it will pay to do your homework.

I used to think that my biggest concerns about living in Costa Rica were concerns about theft, about being able to learn the language, and about whether my wife would be able to find enough true friends to replace her circle of very close friends back home. Whatever my #1 concern was, however, it has instantly been supplanted with “46 US warships & 7,000 US Marines on route to Costa Rica”. I cannot think of much else that would more quickly and completely turn me off to my dream of retiring in Costa Rica than for the country to lose its heritage of peace and independence and be ruined by the influence and presence of the U.S. military. OK, OK, the Chinese or Russian military would be a quicker and more complete turn off! If the country doesn’t desperately need the U.S. military, their presence is a big concern. If the country does desperately need them, then I guess I need to rethink whether I really want to be in the country.

For those interested in reading more objective information on the original topic of this string (undoubtedly more than most will ever want to read), you can find a copy of the actual legislation here:

    http://primapanama.blogs.com/files/hire-act-of-3-18-10.pdf

The relevant portion of the Act, Title V, starts on page 27 and goes to page 48. Bad as the 30% withholding provisions are, there also are a bunch of new foreign asset disclosure requirements, reporting requirements, and other bad stuff crammed in the Act.
