It should be noted that Reserva Conchal’s golf course (www.reservaconchal.com) is a private course. Only home owners or renters of properties within the development can use the course. The hotel guests, of course, can use the course as well. Hacienda Pinilla, (www.haciendapinilla.com) which is a nice course in this area of Guanacaste is public even through it’s within a 4500 acre development. My husband and I had paid $1,500 for a ‘flexible 50’ pass, which gives you and your spouse (or family member) 50 plays on the golf course over the course of 1 year. Then you pay $15.00 per person for a cart fee. We found this to be reasonable, especially for a nice resort golf course. They also offer family memberships in the $3,000 per year range.

dehaaij: I did read that. Thanks for the update. I am glad to hear that the government is taking action where mass developing is concerned and realizing that it’s everyone’s issue.

Hi Alexgil: My ob/gyn is Dra. Sae-Hui Kim Park. Her number is: 2208-1210. She’s on the 2nd floor of the CIMA offices #10. Immigration wouldn’t say anything to you while pregnant. It’s not an immigration issue to be pregnant–it’s an airline issue. I travelled while 6 months pregnant and they could have cared less! When they care is when you look 9 months pregnant and look like you could give birth on the plane…Then you would have to get a doctor’s note to fly.

Dominic: Congrats on your upcoming birth! My husband and I just had a baby 3 months ago, and I actually wrote an article about my experience here on Scott’s site. Perhaps Scott could provide the link to make it easy for you… You will most likely have to pay cash. (We had to even though we had INS insurance because my pregnancy fell into a pre-existing condition clause). We paid about $2,500 USD at CIMA for two days in the hospital, epidural, and other incidentals. I found the care to be top notch. I doubt you would notice a difference of the care here compared to other modern cities across the world–I didn’t. The doctors were wonderful and attentive. Also, regarding your questions about citizenship: My son is a CR Citizen and a US Citizen. He can get both passports as well. I am not sure how it works in S. Africa, but the USA and CR recognize dual citizenship. I just applied for his US Passport, and I had to prove the birth abroad (which was a bit complicated) but in the end, it worked out. All my best! Becky

Angie, the contract has not been awarded as of yet, but it should be any time now (so they tell all of us over here near Flamingo). If I hear of anything, I’ll be sure to post it on this site. Becky

Well, it would depend on who you ask. As you may, or may not know, Tamarindo does not have a plan regulador (zoning plan), but is currently working on one. That means that currently anyone can build many stories (and build commercial right next to a small home) so long as the municipality approves it. Many are pushing to get restrictions places for no more than 2-3 stories within 200 meters of the ocean and no more than 10 stories from 1km back, but of course, nothing is set in stone yet. I do hope that it gets passed, because it will make for a nicer landscape in the area. I don’t view 3 stories as excessive at all. I do know of a proposed project with 9 and 11 stories and I have unhappy clients who will be near this project, but they knew that the land in front could eventually be built on. Without a plan regulador, it will continue to be an issue.

dundalk1, the demonstration was one against high density (high rise) projects in Tamarindo. The local residents (of which I am one) are not interested in sky scrapers (a la Cancun) in this area. Tamarindo has gotten a bad rap and the residents and responsible developers are seeing that Tamarindo gets turned around with doing low density, eco-friendly projects, improved infrastructure (the main road in Tamarindo is being reconstructed as we speak), and a much needed Sewage treatment plant for the area which is currently being discussed and will be a reality in the coming year or so. Hopefully more of these demonstrations will happen in other beach areas. I think development is great, just responsible development. My clients come to Costa Rica for the nature, not the high rises!

They say after January 1. I was just there today making transfers in person because you can’t do them online UNLESS they are already in your ‘Cuentas Favoritas’. If they are saved in your banking information, then YES, you can transfer online. If you don’t, you can only do it in person or wait until after January 1. I know…it’s a complete hassle.

If you have a Skype phone, you don’t need to be on your computer to make or receive Skype calls. I love my Skype phone! You can use it anywhere there is a high speed internet connection. However, the connection is not perfect all the time and if the internet goes down, so does Skype. Having a back up plan is a good idea. The rates that are mentioned for regular phone Costa Rica-USA calls are the best I have heard of.

Hi Angie: Cocos is a dark sand beach and I feel as though there are just nicer beaches. Of course, everyone has their own opinion on the beach, that’s just mine… Have a great time!

    Hi Angie:
I assume you are speaking of Playas del Coco near Hermosa and Playa Panama? If so, there is plenty to do in Cocos. There are lots of restaurants, shops, bars and beach to keep you busy. I personally don’t care for the beach at Cocos at all. Just travel a little north or south to the beaches of Hermosa or Ocotal. Those are nicer than Cocos. Papagayo Seafood and Papagayo Steakhouse are great restaurants in Cocos proper. Father Roosters in Ocotal is a good hang out as well. Ginger is a good restaurant in Hermosa. There are a few casinos in Cocos if you are into that…There is plenty to do in terms of being outdoors. There is some great diving, boat tours, fishing, ATV, canopy tours, etc to do in the area. If you have a car you may want to check out the beaches to the south as well as Rincon de La Vieja volcano (northeast of Cocos) and maybe Africa Mia Safari in Liberia as well. Have fun!

Scott, I went to school to be a reporter…so I know that not all we see is the ‘truth’, but rather what the media wants us to believe. “Gatekeepers” anyone?
That is really interesting that some media want to charge YOU to be on their show? How insane! If they are truly a reputable source, they will listen to what you have to say and air it, unedited…but I guess that is asking too much. The one thing this story did mention was that while Costa Rica is popular, some are choosing to go to Nicaragua and other ‘cheaper’ destinations. We would be naive to think that Costa Rica is the ‘only’ place people should consider retirement. Having said that, CR is still my favorite, but I guess I am biased.

    Hi Roberta:
I am not sure if Aerocasillas delivers to the home. You’ll have to inquire. My parents live in La Garita, down the road from Atenas, and they pick up their mail at the pharmacy down the road. I pick up mine at the Tralapa station because I live out of the central valley. You should start with the basic package and if you start to get a lot of mail, you can always switch to a different one. Aerocasillas actually emailed me when they calculated that switching to the next package up would save me money. How is that for customer service! Also, do yourself a favor, and don’t forward your address with the USPS, you WILL get a ton of junk mail I have heard. I just changed my address with my creditors and gave my new address to friends and family. If you do get junk email, you can actually get a credit from Aerocasillas by sending back the mail.

Roberta: It’s spelled Aerocasillas, so I am not sure if you spelled it aerocallis like you did in this post. Just an FYI. I have an account and it’s easy to get mail sent to Costa Rica. Your address would be:

    Roberta
SJO 12345 (you will have an account number specific to you)
    PO BOX 25331
Miami, FL 33102 (for envelopes only)

There is a physical address for shipments of packages, but I don’t know that off the top of my head. Depending on the amount of mail received, we spend $30-45 per month typically. You may spend less depending on your mail habits. It takes about a week for mail from the states to hit San Jose. I get mail in about 10 days at the beach, as it’s delivered via a cargo service. You can call Aerocasillas and they have reps that speak English if there is something you are unsure of. They charge my credit card each month and I receive online statements that are emailed to me, so it’s convenient. I have been happy so far with Aerocasillas service. Good luck.
