I stayed a week at La Terraza B&B (http://www.laterrazab-b.com/).I cannot say enough good about it. Beautiful, wireless internet in rooms, great breakfast, secure (I left money, laptop, etc. in my room daily), extremely clean (I saw Xiena cleaning the railings on the balcony as part of the daily cleaning ritual! There is a river in the back yard (equal to a big creek in the USA) to fall asleep to. I have read, but have no personal knowledge, some reviews of Posada Mimosa that said that they had difficulty sleeping because of the nearby autopista noise, and that the breakfast was a cold continental style breakfast. Did I say that La Terraza’s breakfast is great?
I’m a fan, as you can tell.

mollyjimMemberRegarding title insurance: I haven’t actually seen a policy written on Costa Rica property, but I would presume it’s generally the same as it is in the US (I’ve been in the title insurance industry for over 30 years). Title insurance is based on risk avoidance (a thorough search of public records for matters affecting property) as opposed to casualty insurance, like health or life insurance.
Title insurance does not, in general, protect against events occuring AFTER the date the title policy is issued. So if the squatting began after the property purchase, title insurance does not help. Standard title insurance does not insure against matters not disclosed by public records. If a search of the registry doesn’t disclose any squatter claims, then title insurance provides no protection.JimP

mollyjimMemberI’m fairly certain that you can get Dr. Dish in Puriscal; David, whom I met on a George Lundquist tour, is further north than that. As David points out, though, the further south you go, the more interference/weak signals/likely rainouts you’ll face.

leaving for Medford, Oregon in the morningmollyjimMemberGeorge Lundquist has installed one on his house in Barbacoas (near Puriscal); I don’t recall the manufacturer or the exact cost, but it was about $1000, and had a 50+ gallon tank. If interested, you might visit George’s site (http://www.costaricaretireonss.com/) and drop him an email requesting info. I agree with David; solar hot water seems a no brainer to me.

Well, they’ll remove it after you pay them back!

mollyjimMemberThat site, and perhaps others, seems to use a decimal in place of a comma. That is 1,808 square meters, or just a bit small than half an acre. 4,000 square meters is approximately 1 acre; 2,000m2 is half an acre, and so on.
Best,
JimmollyjimMemberDebbie, I’m glad you posted this. Not only gives you a ball park figure as to prices, but gives you helpful hints about volume of household goods, ways to pack, and so on. I’ve saved it in my Costa Rica folder now, and I hope to be able to make use of it soon (that’s relative; two years is “soon” and “too long” at the same time!
Pura vida,

mollyjimMemberScott,
George Lundquist recommends Jim Mateosky, the owner of Iguana Land as one of his “benchmark” people, as being trustworthy and fair. Two weeks ago we visited with Jim and his partners at one of his developments during our tour with Jim, and then spent half a day (on a spur of the moment phone call) with Jim looking as several other projects. The lots seem fairly priced, and there were several we really liked, and we’re thinking hard about revisiting the San Ramon area and Jim.

mollyjimMemberJasman’s understanding is accurate. ATMs are everywhere; Scotia Bank ATMs read in English just like our Wells Fargo ones at home, so we felt very comfortable using them. We used colones far more than we used dollars, and hotels generally have the exchange rate posted in the lobby.
