Well Scott maybe you were responsible for the boiler room scam going down. According to the article they arrested most all involved with that in 2006. Seems like they missed a few locals and they started anew. I just mentioned this because we see so little on t.v. about Costa Rica up here in the north and thought you might be interested. I hope the ones caught stay there, I’m sure prison life is a little harsher than in the states. And yes, scammers are everywhere. I appreciate your site, I check in often and enjoy the articles. MudsharkMemberHere’s a way to do it on your own with help. Last year my wife and I visited CR and had a GREAT vacation. Being the first trip there for us we had the same questions. We used Gecko Trail Adventures. We picked ours tours and hotels thru their site. We were picked up by mini vans from start to finish and they were always on time. We figured we saved some money doing it this way too, as they passed along the deals they received. Enjoy Costa Rica, we did.
MudsharkMemberHaving just got back from Costa Rica and spending over a week in the caribe side I have formed a few opinions. Since you are going this summer you will not have a problem finding lodging, you won’t need to book in advance, pick your lodging after you get there. Also search puerto viego satilite.com for lots of info for that area. We stayed in PV for most of the time at Jacaronda. Inexpensive and charming. You can find many other options in town and I would not rule out Cahuita. The people are very nice and friendly for the most part. Punta Uva beach is stunning. If I had my way i’d be looking for a place near the beach there even though it is more expensive. I didn’t find the humidity that bad, but it was hot and use your sun screen. Take that from the white man from Idaho, that looked like a lobster. Enjoy and pura vida. dennis
MudsharkMemberAs a retired trucker I know about the use of engine brakes. As you probably know they are used to slow the rpm’s of the diesel engines and save on brakes. I don’t know if there are laws in CR pertaining to noise level. I do know that truckers love that sound. Why I don’t know. I didn’t. Best to stop by a checkpoint and ask the local law. From my visit there it seems to be normal, they used them in towns even while upshifting.
MudsharkMemberGood point David. But maybe the answer is yes. For a country that brags about it’s carbon footprint, they are only looking up. Not straight ahead, because you might step on more than trash, had to navigate more than one pile. I’ve been to Belize and I don’t remember the trash problem there. That being said, it doesn’t keep me from moving to this beautiful country. But it does go into the plus and minus list.
MudsharkMemberA couple of items are holding my wife and I from retiring somewhere warm. First she has until the end of the school year to join me in retirement. That problem is easily solved. The big problem is selling any one of our properties. We’ve downsized, moved into our rental and have been trying to sell the other house and acreage that was to be used for our retirement home. We’ve been to Costa Rica. Loved the people, the country is beautiful. Only one item turned us off about C.R.. The trash along the roads, everywhere we went. We are coming back this fall. We will look at the Pacific side this time. We are probably goning to look at other countries too. Keep all options open. Maybe our house will sell this summer. Anyway we will be back. Pura Vida
MudsharkMemberI’ve been reading these informative articles and have gained alot of insight about many issues related to retirement in C R. My wife and I have discussed moving south away from the cold North Idaho winters. We took our first trip down during Xmas holidays. We did the rainforest, volcano (still waiting for the jeep ride) and river raft trip. We spent 9 wonderful, warm days in Puerto Viego, and along the Carribean coast. From what I have learned from residents there, it does rain alot. But it is scattered out through the whole year. Only rained 3 times in 9 days and only at night. Maybe just luck. It seems a vegetarian would have a year round garden there. Acconmadtions will be cheap during none peak season and you can gain alot of info on a web site Puerto Viego Satelite.com. And it is very laid back. No high rises, just nice accumilation of cultures. Dennis
