Medical malpractice suits will never be reduced until there is comprehensive tort reform. Given that 75% of congress, including the current executive Oblahblahblahma, that is highly unlikely to happen. Lawyers pass laws to benefit lawyers, which can only be interpreted by lawyers. Texas is the only state that has passed comprehensive tort reform (2 years ago) with respect to medical malpractice. The result has been a 51% reduction in malpractice insurance costs and such a mass influx of doctors that the licensing baord cannot keep pace. Any doctor will tell you that many unneccesary tests are preformed on patients simply to keep the lawyers away. There are more lawyers in the 76 story Columbia Center in Seattle than the entire country of Japan. In Japan, the losing side pays all the costs of the lawsuit….what a concept.
Medical malpractice is NOT the reason we here in the US pay far more for healthcare than other industrialized countries while millions of our citizens go without healthcare coverage. Lawsuits account for a fraction of our healthcare costs which is around 3%. Torte reform will not by any means lower the costs of healthcare. For too long, insurance companies have had total control of the US health care system. It is the insurance company and NOT the government that gets between the patient and the doctor. Insurance companies decide who live and die in the US by raising premiums and denying coverage all in the name of corporate profits. Thank God we finally have a president who has the heart and guts to do what is morally right and is not afraid of the political consequences. As a registered nurse I’ve seen too many people become gravely ill and die because they don’t have health coverage or they didn’t have enough coverage when they thought they did. As someone who has done utilization review for hospitals, I know for a fact that insurance companies are in charge of the US health care system. I’m also willing to pay more in taxes if it means my neighbor will get health care INSTEAD of relying on hospital emergency services. -
