Scott…this doesn’t necessarily make it true but there is a blog on http://www.relocationcr.com that makes mention of this. I sent them an email asking for more details and their actual source of this information.

I’m not saying that the CIA black ops. did not exist but the author’s attemt to tie this kid to that is somewhat of a stretch. He jumps from the shooting at tin cans gun theory to a yet to be substantiated statement that the kid was on anti-depressants and then on to the CIA mind control theory. I wish it were that simple…this kid’s problems were way beyond that theory.

Time out!! Call me crazy or naive but I doubt the credibility of this source. To be clear I am both anti-guns and anti drugs but this article is a little off the wall. The weapons expert they quote as saying that a 9mm Glock is a weapon used for “plinking at cans” must not be aware that this weapon is the choice of police forces and paramilitary forces all over the world. If my memory serves me right an M16 assault rifle is a 7.62 MM as is an AK47….the 9MM Glock packs more power and is a big time gun. There were thousands of people killed in Vietnam by a lot less weapon than a 9MM Glock.

Thec Tribune article he quotes just says “investigators believe that he was using anti-depressants a some point in time”. This is an assumption that could be made since at one time he had been admitted for one day for psycological testing. I’m not saying he wasn’t but this article is not proof.

Then……..the article goes on to talk about CIA involvement at universities, mind control experiments, Manchurian candidate type experiments. WOW!!!! This reporter may be a little off the wall. Read some of the comments posted about this article and this reporter….a lot of these people don’t appear to be mainstream in their thinking.

Don’t believe everything you see on the internet or read in the newspapers.

I still have not heard or seen anything that says he was on any antidepressant medication. The article you point out says “news reports indicate he MAY have been on medication.” It’s quite possible that he was just an unmedicated mental timebomb. Yes, he was referred and admitted for psychiatric care but nothing has been said that indicates he was currently under treatment for anything. He doesn’t appear to be someone who stopped taking his meds and went bonkers. It will be interesting to see if he was or was not taking antidepressants.

Was this on CNN or do you have another source? I had not heard anything (at this point)about him being on any mind altering substance.

Scott….just curious as to how an American or Canadian can be either an attorney or a real estate agent in CR. Isn’t this taking a job away from a Tico or does the fact that they would be able to conduct business in English as opposed to Spanish have something to do with it?? (Surely there are bi-lingual Costa Ricans to do these jobs) Or….would they first have to become CR citizens??

It’s hard for me to imagine our cats on a plane!! Did you have to sedate them? Just getting cats to a vet in a cat carrier is enough torture for most people!

If you end up selling everything to move you will have the best asset of all….CASH!! It’s easy to get a loan at a favorable rate if you have cash to secure the loan or you could just pay cash for the house in CR.

If your plan was to secure a loan with the equity in your US home but you don’t have a whole lot of equity, the bank won’t loan you a lot anyway.

If you can convert your equity to cash by selling your home you will be in a lot better shape to get a loan. Currently in the US you probably could only get 80% of your equity in the form of a home loan. If you sell your home and use the cash equity to secure a loan, you can probably get 100% of your cash(your former home equity) in the form of a loan.

References that are compensated for taking calls from prospective customers might make me wonder a little ( as does sending someone $$ for something that I haven’t actually seen that’s “going to be” a viable development someday) but as you said only time will tell. Hope it turns out well for you.

How can you say the only risk is yours if I spend the money for 2 round trip tickets to Costa Rica, pay for my own accomodations, and meals and rent a car to visit your properties? Are you saying that you are going to pick up all of my expenses incurred to come and look at your property?

It seems to me the only risk that is yours is the time involved in showing me your property….not many real estate companies around where you have to “pay” upfront for giving them the opportunity to sell you property. What am I missing?

Are you saying that you sent them money without going down there to inspect the property? I would assume the law firm is theirs and not yours?? Hopefully this is not the case but if it is I certainly hope you won’t become a victim. It may be a little to late to hedge your bets.

Alfred…you are certainly correct about our right to be able to express our ideas, beliefs and opinions. One right you forgot to mention is that we all have the right to leave (and move to Costa Rica!!!)

I too have a great number of things that I feel are wrong here in the US. But….I choose to express them in places other than the “We Love Costa Rica” site. Hopefully this site will remain a source of information about Costa Rica and not a soapbox for unhappy Americans to bitch about the US.

Sadly enough, a lot of the people who complain the loudest won’t be happy any place they live!!

Great post! We use this forum to help us learn about Costa Rica. We are well aware of the good and bad about the US.(There are a lot of good things too!) To the best of my knowledge the line waiting to get into the US is a lot longer than the line waiting to get out! If and when we decide to move to Costa Rica hopefully we will not be obseessed with the past and can look ahead to the future and enjoy.

Maravilla…another way to look at the situation. You said your home in Costa Rica is paid for. The money you have invested in the CR home isn’t making any money for you except for the fact that it is probably appreciating in value. But…you cannot spend the appreciation and if you ever want to replace it with another home in CR anything you would buy will have probably appreciated at a comparable rate so unless you downgrade you will essentially be swapping dollars.

Your home in Colorado is costing you money every month….mortgage, insurance, utilities, taxes and so on. This is money that comes out of your pocket every month. Let’s assume it’s perhaps $2000 per month. This money is not really adding value to your house other than reducing the mortgage.

Look at the “opportunity costs” of the money that you don’t have now that you will have when you sell the home in Colorado. Assuming you have a 2000 sq. ft. home and as you stated the building costs in your area are $264/sq.ft.. That’s roughly $528,000 that you could invest at let’s say 7% which comes to $37000 per year added to the $24000 out of pocket costs that you have a grand total of $61000 per year in income that you are not getting right now.

Add to this the peace of mind factor, and consider all of the pains associated with owning 2 homes (especially in 2 countries) and perhaps this will help justify that fact that you you may have to cut the price drastically but you will be in CR and it won’t be your problem anymore!! (just food for thought)

Perhaps we should have a St. Louis branch of “We Love Costa Rica”!!! You neglected to mention the fact that the zoo is free and is the 1st. or 2nd. best rated zoo in the US or the the Missouri Botanical Garden is rated among the top three in the world. What about the Muny Opera..the Fox Theater, the baseball Cardinals, the symphony, the art musuem and the list goes on and on….St. Louis isn’t Costa Rica but we have enjoyed living in the St. Louis area for the last 25 years.

The crime we all talk about is just about anywhere you choose to live and any country you choose to live in…you just have to know where not to go. I wouldn’t go to downtown St. Louis in the middle of the night and I wouldn’t go to downtown San Jose in the middle of the night.

We live about 45 miles west of St. Louis (just 10 miles from where the little boy was abducted last week) This is a rural area but “progress” and crime are moving this way but isn’t that the case just about everywhere? It comes with the territory so to speak. The correlation between race and crime is a somewhat misleading statistic as it is more of a result of the differences between the “haves” and the “have nots” and in the case of the US this gap is getting larger and larger.

Our main reason for looking at Costa Rica as a retirement site is for a easier, more simple, less complicated life. I feel that we will have to deal with crime no matter where we are.
