I’ll bring the beer!!

quote=”VictoriaLST”]I just finished your article on FATCA and I am … well not astonished – this government will do anything it can to make it worse. Not scared, yet.

I think we need a to set up an all-day conference with a couple of US tax specialists, financial planners, a tax lawyer, and a representative or two from the IRS. I see the day as the IRS in the morning. Then we kick his butt out and settle down to figuring out what to do about this. That includes filing an international suit against the IRS, somehow, someway.

I live near Nuevo Arenal (and only got here 4 months ago) so I won’t be much help if we do something in SJ. But there are enough of you big brains in the Central Valley to get this started. Then perhaps connect with other xpats in other nations. This is repulsive, repugnant, and ridiculous. LETS FIGHT!
Maravilla…….an excellent description of Pura Vida. There is a Costarrican saying that goes like this…. “no hay ningun mal de que bien no venga” which basically means that there nothing bad that happens that doesn’t bring some good. Pura Vida

[Victoria………..here is a link to an online journal with many references to info on CR Archeology. You should find what you are looking for there http://arqueocostarica.net/articles.htm

quote=”VictoriaLST”]We would like to educate ourselves on the styles and decorations of pre-Columbian ceramics in the Arenal region. This is proving a bit difficult. Can anyone suggest web sites to us?

YES we know all about the law on collecting, etc. We aren’t collecting anything but broken pieces – small ones. We just want to know what we’re looking at when we see fragments on our walks along the lake. Thanks
Maravilla……..a friend of mine paid his tax yesterday for a inactive SA , ¢67,000, and the fine was ¢50/day. That was in Alajuela but as you know it might be different in Heredia or San José
does anyone know what the REAL fines for not paying are? someone said they are C180,000 plus 3% interest per month. that can’t possibly be right. i didn’t pay the tax today because after paying the usurious traffic fine of $350, it was eventually reduced to about $25. C180,000 is more than the tax, so how could that be possible? maybe i should’ve just paid the damn thing and gotten it over with.
No Maravilla I didn’t just pack up a a bag or two and move to Costa Rica 35+ yrs. ago. I packed up my VW bus, loaded up my wife and dog and here I am, still. I must say it hasn’t been all that easy but has been worth it. “Aqui me quedo” If you have a dream go for it.
i really don’t get why people think pointing out the obvious is being negative. there are many many things to consider when moving here with children. the primary one is having the funds to live here and the origin of those funds if you are not able to legally work. then there is resiidency and all the headaches and paperwork that come with that little adventure. relying on meeting the Tico of one’s dreams is a bit farfetched — what does a single mother do in the meantime? did you just pack a bag or two and move on down to Costa Rica with nary a thought to these issues? i doubt it.
Kim…..by all means come and see for yourself if Costa Rica is the country of your dreams. It is not paradise but I wouldn’t live any other place. Don’t let the nay sayers scare you away. I really wonder why some on this forum are so negative. Maybe they just don’t want to share the secret. Maybe you will meet the Tico of your dreams and all will be solved. Nothing worth doing is easy. I say, go for it but be careful.
What happens in CR if one is NOT paid up in CAJA and one does NOT have private insurance AND one has, for instance, a stroke?
I know what I would do……get my ass to the hospital, emergency, as soon as possible and find someone to pay me up as soon as possible. Very, very few are ever turned away in an emergency situation. By the way, don’t go to CIMA.

Scott…….. “mal de muchos, consuelo de tontos”
The image of me running towards you would have been quite accurate since I was in the very same park for an hour yesterday morning running although I wasn’t robbed.

It’s always more serious when it happens to us but whatever crime story we can think of here, we can point to similar events in many other countries…

    Whether it’s crime in Central Park, NY rising 44%: [ http://awalkintheparknyc.blogspot.com/2011/02/central-park-crime-rose-44-in-2010.html ]

Or home invasions which “involved six armed men claiming to be police officers who burst into a home located in a subdivision of contemporary single houses in West Phoenix. ”

“For the third time in a week, city police are investigating a home invasion in which men identifying themselves as police rushed into a home and bound and robbed its occupants.”

Crime in San Jose is higher than practically everywhere else in Costa Rica and worse than in many U.S., cities and better than many others… And I agree that Costa Rica does need to improve their laws – especially for repeat offenders – but, I’m sorry you can not say in general terms for Costa Rica as a whole that “crime here is worse” because it’s simply not factual.

But seriously, I am sorry to hear you had an unfortunate experience smekuly and if it’s any consolation when we tried using your credit cards, they had already been cut-off!
Scott, you and I are always on the same political wave length. Thanks for pointing out the suspicious nature of this military visit from the largest, most powerful economic colonial empire on the planet. Anybody who buys into the story that this is a humanitarian visit is beyond naive and beyond enlightenment as to the true nature of this beast. I don’t argue with such people. Even after the bullets and bodies are in the news, these people will beat their chests harder and wave that old flag higher. I yearn to escape these people but I still find them in Costa Rica.
Sprite I suggest that you try Cuba or North Korea or maybe Scott’s mountaintop.

I don’t know the costs at Cima but hear that it is quite expensive(according to my standards) I also had denge fever a few weeks ago and because my platelet count went below 100 to about 65, I checked myself into Hospital San Rafael in Alajuela. The Caja,CCSS covered everything. I couldn’t have asked for better treatment but of course Cima would be better. The denge ward had eight beds with lots of activity and great care. Have to say the bottom line great.

There is a Vet in La Garita, Alajuela just past the UCR Fabio Baudrit Ag. Station on the right who has this service for 5,000 colones/day, I think.
