Peggy,
We are moving to CR at the end of Jan 2012. It sounds like the pup might need the meds before that. Let me know and maybe we can help you.

I researched the illegal part of homeschooling your children and it only applies to the tico children. Children that move into Costa Rica can be home schooled. It is very important to have your children all current on their shots! It would be also very good for your children to go to the local schools to learn the language and learn their culture and make friends.
I was wondering if this is one of the developments whose roads have been washed out during this heavy period of rain?
The new road widened by ICE has had some minor slides on it but nothing that was not removed in an hour or two with a front end loader. ICE has done a nice job with water control on the road to Osa Mountain Village due to the fact that they are using this same road which leads to the future hydro lake project 5+ miles further east.
Hi all…

My husband and I are moving to Playa Zancudo early next year, for a minimum of a year. We’ve spent some time in the Golfito area and PZ, and are excited to make the move. We’re in our late twenties/early thirties, from the States, leaving our jobs, and are obviously looking for a complete change of pace, hence Zancudo!

Any area-specific advice? I’ve certainly spent some time perusing the forum and have found some useful info there. Moreover, I would love to connect with others, particularly on the Pacific side, those who have knowledge of the PZ/Golfito area, and anyone who wants to share, chat, or make an introduction.

    Take care,
    KFG
My wife and I (along with our 5 children ages 6-16) are relocating to the Osa Pacific area as well. On one of our many vacations to the Dominical area we came across Osa Mountain Village in the mountains east of Cortez. We have purchase property there and plan to build a home but for the first 12-18 months we will be renting in Ojochal (north of Cortez on the Highway to Uvita. I believe Cortez is about 60-90 minutes north of Golfito but Ojochal and Osa Mountain are full of English speaking Europeans and Americans looking for a “complete change of pace”
Osa Mountain is a self sustaining resort with plans for all food, water and power to be grown and produced on site. Thousands of fruit trees have been planted, chickens and eggs are now in abundance with Tilapia(fish), hogs and goats to follow. They raised 2,000 pineapples last year with 5,000 projected for 2012. Very cool development with US style villas, waterfall repelling, zip lines, tree house rental, mountain biking etc. You can check it out at http://www.osamountainvillage.net and check out some of the Youtube videos as well.

I was just wondering if you do not have the cash to pay the hospital bill at the time of your stay what happens? Sue mentioned a guard had to check if she paid her bill? Will the hospital work with you on payments or do they stick you in jail? I can’t believe you would just stay in the hospital until you can get the money to pay the bill? What if you have health insurance from the U.S that you pay monthly on. Will the hospital work with them?
    Thanks,

Missionaries are like any other charitable organization; some good, some bad.
Does Costa Rica have a large LDS population? I know there is a Temple in San Jose? When I was in Costa Rica 3 years ago I didn’t see a Ward or Stake building on every corner or Seminary buildings behind schools. We live in a town that 50% of the population is LDS. No comment!

There is no vaccine for dengue fever. There are, however, very strict new regulations regarding proper car seats for babies and children. The fines for not having a car seat or for not having the proper car seat are very high (maybe as high as $500) just like all of the other new fines that were imposed on March 1st of 2010. If you are going to be renting a car or riding in a car, check with a Costa Rican consulate in the US to find out what you need to bring in this regard for your 1 year old.
Very good point about the car seat…you may be able to rent a car seat when you rent a car. Be sure to ask.
We brought our own car seats. Our girls sat in them on the plane to Costa Rica and then we had them for our trip.
Just make sure you ask to board the plane before the other passengers with the car seats. We didn’t do that and that didn’t go over real well. If you take the seat on the plane you will be charged for a seat other wise your 1 year old can sit on your lap. Check your airline on what age they start charging. We had the girls sit on our laps to Costa Rica and decided to use the car seats on the way home. It was a much better flight home! We arranged our flights at night which was also better for the girls. Carrying 3 big car seats everywhere was a pain but worth it. I would also suggest using an umbrella stroller. It was so helpful in the airports! I carried on their bottles and snack food and toys and everyone was really helpful. The Ticos love children and they will be very helpful if you need anything even if you don’t speak much Spanish!
    Good luck,

We brought our 2 year old triplet girls 2 years ago and were fine. We rotated who would watch them. The girls loved playing on the beach and in the water and going everywhere that we went. Just use common sense and watch your 1 year old. We are planning another trip with the girls but this might be more of a challenge now that they are 4!
Have fun, you will love Costa Rica!

Personally, I know many Costa Ricans who live in poverty and are honest, caring individuals. What is happening is they are being threatened as well to keep their mouths shut by the thugs that are doing the crimes. The locals who have come into some money are also getting targeted. Imagine that, you finally get somewhere and a neighbor steals your things. The lack of an adequate police force and ways to punish criminals are what is causing this problem. By crime wave, I mean that it is increasing as more people see those getting away with crime, as the criminals become more powerful, they threaten even more and get away with more. It is very negative and increasingly violent cycle that needs to be stopped. Ticos and gringos alike need to work together in their diverse neighborhoods. People are scared both gringo and tico. In the area where we go most often in Costa Rica, the gringos have done much for the local community. They have rebuilt the school, they donate time and energy for life guards, they re-routed the river so that it stops flooding the village, they have started a local library and even given christmas presents to the children in the school. The community is strong there, both gringo and tico. It is the thugs that ruin this relationship. It is tragic.
This post says it all!!!
Sounds like a great community, do you mind naming it?
Obviously a little police enforcement will go along way in such a community.

    Thanks!
I would be very interested in knowing what community you are writing about. Its very helpful to all of us.
    Thanks,
Costa Rica Dreamin’ — please don’t move here. you are the kind of person i am trying to get away from. you and your attitudes would not be welcome here. the Ticos would make your life miserable. you wouldn’t last 6 months, if that. stay home where you belong, or better yet, DO check out Idaho. the place is teemin’ with people you would have a lot in common with.
Maravilla, Costa Rica Dreaming would fit perfectly in Northern Idaho. They might even let him run for Mayor! I sure hope more people who are like Costa Rica Dreamin’ will stay away from Costa Rica. Northern Idaho will hand them a gun and a white sheet/hood to wear when they arrive.
i won’t go into the political reasons why i moved here, but not having an Army was way up on the list. basically, i also got sick of colorado winters and only being able to garden for 80 days a year. i love everything about costa rica — the inefficiency of it all, and despite that things still get done, i love that it’s a spanish speaking country, and being able to get raw milk without the gov’t telling me i will die, getting fresh eggs from my neighbor, being able to take a bus and not have to have a car, cheap taxis, an abundance of fabulous fruits and vegetables, friendly people, nice weather most of the time, and a laid back attitude. i even like standing in line at the bank and chatting up the people in front or behind me, having the gerente at the bank kiss me hello, or the guard with the gun call me “mi reina” or “mi amor” — it’s the little things that make up the whole place. i also love the central markets with stall after stall of stuff to eat and buy, like a casbah. i like being able to go into the farmacia and buy ONE bandage for the golpe i got on my toe along with a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and have it only cost me $.45 for both. i like going to the clinic and having all the people tell me what line to stand in, where to sit, how to get things done. you get the idea. i love the essence of the place. the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! What fun!
