Kenny- The people that own “ylang ylang”also own “el sano banano” a hotel in town. You can park on the street across from the el sano and they will drive you back and forth to ylang, ylang. The walk is only about 20 mins. or so so it’s really not bad either way. I was there for New Year’s 2yrs. ago and had to stay in town as they had a five night minimum at ylang ylang for Xmas week and we were only staying for 4. I can’t really comment on the bungalows etc. as I haven’t stayed in one. We did look at the bungalows and the other rooms and the beach suites were kind of interesting. They’re two floors and the loft on the second floor is open to the ocean and has a king bed. If you look at the slide show you’ll see the 3 story building with 3 beach rooms on the first floor and the 2nd. and 3rd. story suites above. There’s much more room than a couple would need but it’s a nice set-up.
Anyway we spent all our time at ylang ylang as we had full use of facilities and it’s very, very nice. I am definitely going back and will skip the in town accomodations.
If you have any other questions I’d be happy to try and answer them.
paumatomMemberTry ylang ylang resort in Motezuma. It’s right on the beach with beautiful grounds, 2 waterfalls in the area to hike to and take a day trip to tortuga for snokelling & picnic on the beach.
paumatomMemberCome on dkt2u- Methinks thou doth protest too much. A simple nod to a historical reality, in the midst of a lenghty post, is hardly a diatribe. It seems you may be the one desiring to edit simple conversation to project a political view.
paumatomMemberI’m not sure if the 150k-200k you referenced is your total budget, but you might want to check out this developement. I’m not involved in any way, just know about it from visiting the area.
paumatomMemberpaumatomMemberWell not to get too political, but there is virtually no chance this will become law. It was done by the majority party, on a friday evening ( less news coverage and scrutiny) after they passed a rules change allowing the minimum wage to be linked in a bill repealing the estate tax. This was to provide republicans with political cover. They can now go to their home states and claim they voted to raise the minimum wage. This has virtually no chance of making it through the Senate. These days the Republican leadership in the House only cares about creating a show for political purposes. I’ve listened to hours of debate recently on Iraq, immigration and last nights minimum wage dog and pony show. At least the Senate still tries to investigate and debate issues in a meaningful manner, the House is a complete joke.
paumatomMemberYeah, It is amazing the places you’ll go in a Suzuki or Dihatsu when you’re in Costa Rica. A Nissan Frontier does take a little adventure out of the process, but at my age I’m trying to come to grips with the fact that a little less adventure might be the way to go sometimes.
paumatomMemberOk, let’s go to the scoreboard:
Moose- Possible interest in hanging out with Tyohar and his posse
Denise- Not so much.
Moose- Make the move in 5-7 yrs.
Denise- Make the move in 4yrs. or less.Seems a lot like our household when we try and figure out what and when.
paumatomMemberHi Moose- I’ve driven the coast road from Paraiso to Montezuma on the tip of the Nicoya. We did that trip during the dry season ( Dec.), don’t think I would try it during the rainy season there are too many rivers (8 or 9). There’s even one spot where you have to drive up stream for a 100 yds. or so to pick up the road. It is a great trip with some stunning scenery along the way.
One of our trips was during September and that is when we saw the turtles. Roads and rivers are quite different during the rainy season. That night we took a little shortcut we usually use during the dry season. There’s a small creek which is usually about 10″ deep in Dec./Jan., well that night the headlights on our 4×4 went underwater as soon as we started in and I’m sure if I had been driving there’s not much chance I would have made it through. We were with a Tico friend so we managed to make it, but it was not a smart move on our part. On that later trip when we drove the coast I rented a 4×4 diesel pick-up and although it turned out not to be really necessary it made the trip extremely easy and added a certain amount of security and peace of mind.
We’re looking at the area around Paraiso for possible retirement. It is about 15 miles or so south of Tamarindo.
paumatomMemberYou’ve got a better chance of knowing when the U.S. will achieve energy independence than you do of knowing if, or when, that highway will be built.
paumatomMemberOstional is a small village mainly noted as a spot where sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. I’ve been there while that was going on and it’s quite a sight to see. We usually spend most of our time a little north of there around Playa Junquillal/Playa Negra. ( Playa Negra is one of the more famous surfing spots in Costa Rica ) The area is pretty laid back although there is quite a bit of developement going on.
I’m also in the San Diego area so let me know if you have any other questions, possibly living in Costa Rica is one of my wife’s favorite topics…..
paumatomMemberI would recommend the hotel don carlos.

Also there is a great restaurant ” Cafe Mundo” a short walk from the hotel.
