Our coventec house is 8 years old with zero problems. Get in touch with Jim Aoki of Rico Realty, Jim has been building with coventec for 10 or 12 years and has done some beautiful homes with it. Don’t have his email handy but look up Rico Realty of Lake Arenal for contact information.

I am not African American but in my experience in the Arenal area the acceptance by both the Tico and Gringo communities depends on the person and not the race.

You are running into legal problems, you need to be a permanent resident to work in Costa Rica. This process takes a minimum of 3 years. Owning your own business is allowed but you cannot work the business, you would be required to hire local staff which would probably eat up any profits.

Depending on where and how you live I would say it is difficult to live on less than $2,000 per month.

My understanding is that as a nonpermanent resident you cannot legally sell at markets. If you are selling food products you much receive a Department of Health certificate for each item and must have a food handlers certificate. However a great depends on the market in question.

I am a little late coming into this conversation but you do need to check with your airlines, most restrict dogs to 2 per flight, even in the hold, so you may need to work with a friend or animal shipper to get them all here.

We settled in the Lake Arenal area after 5 trips exploring various areas in the country. Reason, climate (no a/c nor heating required), beauty, and wonderful community of both expats and Ticos, lack of city traffic (the ocassional herd of cattle in the road are a nuisance) and repeat – great people!
I dont think you need a realtor at this stage. I always advise clients if its your first visit to treat more as a vacation and visit a few different places that provide some contrast in style/climate. Once you have narrowed down the search and decided that you want to pursue Costa Rica further you can then seek out an agent in that specific region, good agents will also be able to point you in the right direction for other parts of the country as well. The welovecostarica recommended realtors network is one of the best places to start.
You might want to check out the area around the north end of Lake Arenal (Nuevo Arenal to Tilaran), it is cool green and beautiful with a wonderful mixed Tico and Gringo community. We are 90 minutes from the Guanacaste beaches and around two and half hours from San Jose.

Depends on where you are and how far you want to drive – La Garita, 11 kilometers on the ruta north of the Airport, has numerous nurseries, you might find what you are looking for there.

That is a difficult one, I would bring sheets and towels, hobby supplies and good quality saucepans. If you have good kitchen small appliances, a good sewing machine – I would bring those as well.

We shipped lots and lots of books and nothing else and have brought the above items as we have made trips back to California. The rest, you can find here and someone to fix them.

It is hard to imagine but it really is surprising how unimportant so much of what we live with really are. Start with the minimum and add as you find you need it.

Had it done privately, $1800 per eye. Fantastic results and wonderful service. Do a personal email if you would like more information.

Did what I should have done in the beginning – tracked down the individual travelling with the dog – you are right the $175 was the airlines charge, there was an $11 exit tax. Sorry I wasted your time with a stupid question.

Sorry, been offline a couple of days. The dog was being shipped back to the US, the story came to me via someone who was with the shipper at the airport and the tax was paid at the same desk as the human exit tax was paid.

Have friends taking a couple of dogs back to US next month and hoped to save them last minute hassels and upset of having to pay a hefty tax they knew nothing about.

After a hot, dry, dusty day on the “flatlands” and/or the Guanacaste beaches, the are few joys like driving up the hill toward the lake to our cool, green sometimes rainy and windy home. LOVE IT!
