Thanks Ben, you helped. Dave would like to build a new boat once we are there, do you or does anyone know about the availability of fiberglass building materials?

    Lotus –

Aplogies for the mistake in reference to your sex. And we are to believe that a NY Times article is unbiased and gives the whole picture?

You made your point and I accept that much of what you quote is true, it is however interesting that in 15 years we never heard of people being taken off to concentration camps or being tortured or killed by the “security forces”. Must have had our heads in the sand the whole time.

    Enough said on the subject.

    Lotus –

Whoa back girl – you need to live in the real world.

While I welcome your commenting on my post I believe your “Hitler” argument to be specious and one used by people who know little about anywhere but the USA.

Before Strossner in the chaos of ever changing governments there were NO services available, the majority of David’s employees could not even sign their names never the less read and write because they grew up in that era. Under Strossner, while basic, schools were available in most small towns, as were basic health care facilities. With stability people were able to open businesses and provide sufficient food to feed their families and their babies and small children were not dying of simple treatable diseases. People could live their lives without fear of retribution because yesterday they supported the in power government. In actuality Strossner was much appreciated by the majority of the population ( he probably didn’t need to control the elections, he just wanted to be sure!)

While one likes to believe that any one of us would have given up our lives to prevent a Hitler from comming to power, the reality is that when you fear for your life and the lives of your family the reality is that the great majority of people keep their heads down and try not to be noticed.

Reality isn’t perfection, wish it could be.

    Scott –

We echo Roarks thanks for your service, it is people like you that allow others to say some of the outlandish things they do. Would love it if they could accept both the good and bad.

We lived in Paraguay for 15 years under Strossner, many of our friends there were American and British Military and we saw much of what is good about America while living there. While elections for Strossner were fixed and he was a dictator supported by the American government it was the first stability the country had in a very long time, before Strossner they were going through 3 or 4 changes of government a year, the economy was in the pits. With a great deal of aid from America he turned the country around with low crime and a certain amount of prosperity. Haven’t been back in 20 years but at that time it was a great place to live (even on a Paraguyan salary).

No matter how you look at it, this country has made some mistakes but in my experience the good far outweighs the bad, we just seldom hear about the good!

    Lynn,

Thanks so much for the rental information, last time we were there for three weeks and what should have been a $400 rental (Yaris) with insurance etc. turned out to be $700+, next time we won’t do it online. Good information.

When we go down in June or July we plan to buy, are you pleased with the Sportage? Did you purchase it in Liberia? If so was it from a dealer or a private party, if from a dealer would you recommend them?

    Imxploring,

We are building at Aguacate, are you anywhere near? As soon as we can, we plan to include a wind/solar-and/or hydro backup system and therefore are very interested in your plans. Our “ranchito” should be finished by late May early June and we will come down to furnish the place and then move down as soon as we can get a fence up and arrange shipping the dogs. Would enjoy talking to you about what decisions you have reached about what to install, costs etc.

    Thanks,

    Ruth

To all those posting on the subject, American administrations throughout the years have had their fingers in far too many pies, but to be blamed for everything that goes wrong worldwide down to power outtages in Costa Rica – think it through and be realistic, even for the black copter crowd it is a serious stretch.

Do not know if it is of any assistance to you, but I do know of some bodegas (storage units) near Tilaran next to Lake Arenal. Get in touch with Rene Aoki at Rico Realty (Ricorealty@hotmail.com) if you are interested.

    Dawn –
    Keep in mind the following:

When I was a child growing up in the desert of So. Cal. if there was a theft anywhere in the Valley it was big news in the local papers for a couple of weeks, a murder would be on the front page forever – now thefts are not even reported and unless it is something spectacular or someone famous, murders are weekly occurances and reported somewhere in the back pages of the paper. I feel safer anywhere in Costa Rica (yes, even in downtown San Jose) than I do here.

After a number of trips to CR we recommend that you “Get out of Dodge” i.e. San Jose quickly and get out into the country and drive almost anywhere. On one trip we discovered an beautiful valley with a spectacular waterfall, still not exactly sure where it was (somewhere around Ciudad Quesadas) by following ICE signs to a hydroelectric plant, a facinating archeological site at Guyabo just because we saw the signs on a rough rock road and decided to follow them. Perhaps we lucked out but the drive down to the south over the “Highway of Death” was incrediable and beautiful. Take less travelled routes whenever possible, you will come across good hotels almost everywhere in the country. While the aerial tram trip is rather expensive it is extremely informative and worth the cost, a whitewater rafting trip, a zip line ride, a butterfly farm and a horseback ride through the countryside are all not to be missed educational and fun things to do in our book.

    Have a great time.

I have a map that shows airports (or landing strips) in the following locations –
Limon, Boca del rio Parismia, Boca rio Tortuguero Boca del rio Colorado on the East coast
Atirro, Los Chiles, Upala, Canas, Filadelfia, Puntarenas& Buenos Aires in the central part of the country
Uvitas, Quepos, Pochota, Islita, Carrillo, Nosora & Tamarindo on the West coast.

If you look up NatureAirs website they fly all over the country, that would give you a good idea where there are landing strips.
