We built both our ranchito (finished 2 years ago) and our house which was just finished using covintec and are extremely pleased with the results. The contractor we used has built a number of houses using the product and the building process went very smoothly.
rf2crParticipantDavid –
As always you are an incrediable source of information, this is exactly what I was hoping to find, if things don’t clear up soon will try this avenue. Thanks so much. Ruth
rf2crParticipantWe shipped some books with Barry Wilson of Shiptocostarica. They have a warehouse in Anaheim and will include a partial container with others. He did and excellent job for us and we felt the cost was very reasonable.
Good Luck
rf2crParticipantTalk to Minor Rojas 8824-0232 cell or 2693-1176. He built our ranchito and is building the main house now, does excellent work.
rf2crParticipantLibano is a small town near Tilaran and is famous for its avacados – we live in Aguacate close to lake Arenal and the river is named for the wild avacados that used to grow there. Conditions here are similar to the southern california growing areas, you might have to irrigate in dry season in the lowlands of Guanacaste.
rf2crParticipantThanks, will check them out on Tuesday when we are in SJ
rf2crParticipantIf you dont take into account the cost of housing I believe you could live eaisly on $600 per month, if you are paying $300 to $600 for rent, that makes it a different story. You can check out the cost of most items by going to the hypermas website they publish a weekly flyer with everything from food to appliances and you could do your weekly budget from there and see what you would need to spend. Might help to get a handle on things.
rf2crParticipantScott –
I am sure we can trust them not to do anything you wouldn’t do!
“The Fountaine Labs”
rf2crParticipantWe have traveled throughout the country at all times of the year and found decent accomodations wherever we went. I think $30 to 40 dollars is on the lower scale and you might not be too pleased with what you find at that price.
rf2crParticipantIf you are driving there is a great B&B at Tronadora (at the north end of the lake), fantastic views of the lake and volcano we have actually seen the lava flow from their house, extremely nice people, contact Willeke & Kees by email at casavoogd@hotmail.com or by phone at (506) 693-1203. By the way, it took David 10 years to convince me to take the trip, it took Costa Rica 2 days to convince me that we wanted to live there – we move on Friday!
rf2crParticipantMaravilla,
Thanks for the update, it relieves our minds somewhat, until we are on the ground and have the girls in our possession again I am going to do a lot of fretting. Just cannot help worrying. Did you have the USDA notarize the rabies and health certificates? The Embassy information says nothing about that.
Regards
rf2crParticipantScott – It is known as “stump the expert!” – haven’t brought them in yet but anything we bring will be licensed, which brings up a second question, any idea of availability of shotguns in CR in case we decide to purchase there?
rf2crParticipantmaravilla
Give us a post as soon as you have time after arrival to let us know how it went – you can send me the spare valium – I am going to need it!

rf2crParticipantMy understanding is that getting residency based upon investor status, especially using a “guesthouse” or your house as a B&B is extremely difficult. The immigration department is getting a lot more strict about these sorts of investments and requirements are very difficult to satisfy. You might wat to email Javier at Residency in Costa Rica (jzava@pacbell.net) and ask him if it could be done.
rf2crParticipantWe also wanted to do anything to keep from having to ship our dogs by plane, even seriously thought of driving the whole way to CR (from Southern Caifornia). Call me a coward but driving through Mexico scares me, even speaking excellent Spanish. Their officials are so out of control and when they can hold you, your vehicle and animals hostage it is too much an unknown. I researched every possibility, including freighters. Came up with nothing – Cruise lines won’t take animals, nor will freighters, most freighters won’t even take passengers anymore. Our final decision was that we will drive to Houston and fly from there with the dogs, that gives them the shortest possible trip with no stops and no transfers.
If you come up with something in you research, please let us know.
