If you cannot find what you need why not design what you want and take the plans to Sarchi and have it made. You also might try La Artista, they might have something. I believe their website is laartista.com.

Rita – we also used residency in costa rica – once we got all our paperwork together (was a little more that usually difficult as David is English and I American.) It only took us 6 monts from the time the papers were submiitted to actually having our cedulas in hand. Javier in the US and his sister, Mayane (speaks perfect English) in CR were fantastic and very plesant to work with.

We had no problem, we are STILL not there but have had an account over a year now. Our estate agents just provided us will letters saying that we were known to them and we were able to open both checking and savings accounts in our names.

Sorry, Nosora is an area we didn’t research, we settled on property around Lake Arenal to live. Exploring the Nosora area is something we plan to do once we are living there. I’m sure you will hear from someone who can be more help.

    Terry,

Tried to contact you via your email, was told the address was not valid. If you are still looking for a place to stay in the Arenal area let me know.

    mittizzi –

This forum is a lot more that politics, people are incrediably helpful and willingly give of their time and experiences to help with those many questions that come up when you are considering relocating. You can learn a lot by going back and reading all the previous posts, there are so many topics covered that will help you understand more of what life in CR is like and what it can take to get there.

My inclination is to suggest that you do what we did on our first trip, get a guide book (and the map Scott recommends here on the site), hire a car and explore. Accept that driving can be a little frustrating but when you get lost or take some side road you discover some of the most beautiful unspoiled areas of Costa Rica. You can always find a decent hotel anywhere you go (that’s where your guide book comes in handy) so you don’t need to book in advance. Pickup your car somewhere out of San Jose, we spent 4 frustrating hours exploring “barios” around San Jose before we found the road to Cartago! The rest of the trip was pure joy and the reason we are moving down there in January.

This can also be done going with a bus tour (small busses with 10 to 12 passengers) that takes you from one activity to another and hotels are booked for you. Can’t make recommendations on what company to use but I am sure others on this site can.

    Good luck.

    Thanks all for the help,

Will try the central market in San Jose when we make the treck down from Arenal and for now will take a supply of seed quality beans down with us. Black beans are fine for many dishes but just do not have the right flavors for good mexican food.

Jenny, Collards have never been a favorite of mine but will take some seeds with me and try them out in the vegetable garden I believe that if mustards will grow, collards should too.

    Peg,

Spirit may be the cheapest but unless they have improved since May, I’ll pay a bit more for almost any airlines.

Diego – Careful what you wish for, I have been “working” with the same county of Riverside to split 40 acres into 4 ten acre parcels in an area that is zoned for 5 acre parcels. So far it has taken $106,000 and 2.5 years and we still don’t have the final map. And no, there are no special circumstances – roads, water & electricity are all available. The so called planning of the Coachella Valley has allowed unfettered development to the point we just as well be living in Orange County with all of the walled communities and wall to wall commercial developments. The beauty of the desert has been concreted over and the local agriculture (table grapes, dates and citrus mainly) has been desimated.

I see the Costa Rican local governments waking up and trying to protect their country from the same indisciminent development, it doesn’t happen overnight but I see it happening.

    Thanks “Guys”,

You have come up with the same information I have and it doesn’t look good, I don’t want to move down in January and leave the dogs until Summer as we hit the heat restrictions (besides don’t want to be living there with them here.) I guess we might have to risk it and drive to whoevers hub, wherever that might be and plan to stay there until we can get on a flight – a long spell in a Motel 6 in Houston (Atlanta, Miami or ?) with two dogs – oh boy – that sounds like a ball! Appreciate all your info, just hoped maybe someone had taken a different route and that there was something I was missing.

Just a note, unfortunately I did not hear the whole broadcast but KFI radio (Los Angeles, CA) announced that the State Department had issued a Travel Warning about the Tamarindo area of CR due to roving bands of armed and violent gangs. I checked the State Department website this morning but did not find anything there – if there is a travel advisory out, it is going to be very bad for tourism.

Wish we could hear the other side of the story, sounds shocking and scary based upon the info. given in that article. While I am in no way suggesting that the owner has done anything wrong it might be a lesson for people who move to CR to think about building smaller and more in tune with the country and its way of life. A huge house like that can evoke a lot of envy and attention.
