If you speak spanish fluently you might try talking to Ingrid Solano Alvarez in Tilaran – email lic_I_solano@hotmail.com. She works for one of the banks and the municipality and appears to know exactly what she is doing and is a delight to work with. I am sure she can tell you the best way to go. If you don’t speak Spanish call Jim & Rene @ Rico Realty, they can tell you which lawyers speak English and who to use.
rf2crParticipantcyndic & Gringo Tico –
You have both confirmed what we really allready know about shipping the Toyota – it was a thought, it is a “man and his pickup” thing, Dave doesn’t really want to let it go.
I appreciate the website info. It looks like we will probably opt for a new vehicle but if we do find something that looks good will give the mechanic a try.
Appreciate your imput.
Ruth
rf2crParticipantOK – judging by the deafining silence on this topic – “reliable mechanic” is an oxymoron, if we find something we will take it to a dealership for a check out and hope for the best.
Would however appreciate knowing if anyone knows if it is worth bringing a 96 Toyota T100 pickup. I will look at customs duty and shipping costs, more than anything I would like to know if this is a common vehicle in CR and if we can get the necessary parts.
Thanks, Ruth
rf2crParticipantIn our 7 trips driving all over CR we have been extremely lucky to have escaped your unfortunate experience, but you have certainly made me think – 1) locate the tools just as soon as we get the car – 2)take bicycle cables & locks and attach all cases to something in the car EVERYTIME we are on the road. 3) If not in a safe somewhere, keep our passports & cash in a buttoned pocket. Stories like yours are good reminders of the dangers.
rf2crParticipantYour posting just showed up, California is the answer.
Ruthrf2crParticipantHi Terry –
If you are looking for cheap, ignore my original suggestion of staying at Casa Turriure – it is wonderful but definately not cheap. We have made friends with a delightful couple who owned a property in La Suiza and I am sure they could provide you with all the info you might need about the area. If you are willing email me direct at rfatacg@yahoo.com with your email address and I will pass it on to Pat & Ian with the request that she contact you. There was a hotel up on the hill where we ate – I looked through the windows of the cabins & while not elegant it looked clean enough. The view was spectacular and the food decent and inexpensive. Unfortunately I cannot find my book and cannot remember the name – will look for it and get back to you.

rf2crParticipantHi Kimyoa –
Sorry, for some reason your reply does not show up on the topic. We are located approximately 15 miles north east of Palm Springs. We almost certainly will ship out of Los Angeles, but will pack the container here on the property. We will purchase a container so that we have it to use once we are in Costa Rica. It will go to our property at the lake where we will unpack.
Right now we are trying to decided what to do, our first plan was to leave everything here and get what we needed in CR. BUT there are two major items to consider, 1) the boat and 2) the books I want to send.
Having done it before I know that I can live without most things, but I NEVER want to go through having to read the same book for the 3rd, 4th or 5th time because that is all I have available plus I have a large number of expensive reference books for birds, plants and projects that we don’t want to leave behind.
So – now we are looking at the container idea, but since we don’t plan to ship furniture probably won’t fill it.
You can contact me direct at (760) 329-3083 or rfatacg@yahoo.com.

rf2crParticipantTerry,
Just checked my map, Pavones is on the road from Turrialba to Siquirres and we travelled that road numerous times when we were staying in the area. I really cannot remember Pavones as anything much more than a few houses along the main road. I am sure there is more of the town down on the flat but I seriously doubt that there is a hotel or B&B there, you might halve to use Turrialba or La Suiza as your base.
rf2crParticipantxspire1
This is only a suggestion but there are service and charity organizations like the Rotary Club that have chapters in Costa Rica. Since these are usually business men/women they might have contacts in the shipping and political communities that could help you. You might contact the chapter closest to where the books are in Canada and see if they could help you.

When are you planning on shipping? We are down near Palm Springs and are thinking of buying and shipping a 20′ container so we can ship our boat and books, will have excess space, but probably won’t be shipping until September. Shipping period could be flexible. Interested?
rf2crParticipantTerry from Texas –
Don’t remember a Pavones near Turrialba but La Suiza and the whole area is beautiful, it was our first choice until we visited the Arenal area and made our final decision to settle there. If you can afford to – stay at Casa Turrire at least one night, we used it as a base for a few days and LOVED it. (It is not cheap, but this one of those magical places you get what you pay for.)
Have a great trip and have fun.

Presume you have contacted Scott and received some useful information. You might get in touch with Jim & Rene Aoki in the Lake Arenal area. Jim has been in construction forever and knows both building new houses and rehabs. Elisabeth who works with them also does rehabs of Tico houses. All three are people we have spent time with and really trust. You can reach them through Ricorealty.com
rf2crParticipantTerry,
I am not sure exactly what you expect, Javier did our residency for $1,800 for the two of us. His work included a great deal of jumping through hoops as I am a US Citizen, David English in the US on a Green Card. We married in England. As a result we had to work between Los Angeles & London Embassys – then in December we took all of the info, and Javiers sister spent a whole day driving us around SJ from the US Embassy to fingerprinting etc. etc. The documents were filed in March and should be completed in June. I would STRONGLY recommend using his services. I believe we paid a small amount over the fee for photographs for the SJ police department + cost of getting up to date documents from England, local police department and Los Angeles County for my birth certificate. His fees covered everything else.
Good Luck
rf2crParticipantTo all Gringos planning to move to Costa Rica – if your plan is to take your present lifestyle to Costa Rica, don’t go!
You can’t have your Condo resorts, golf courses, fancy hotels, malls, swimming pools etc. without having an effect on the ecosystem and the society. There are plenty of resort towns around the world, don’t turn the whole of Costa Rica into one and then complain that it isn’t the paradise you remember it being. We Gringos are bringing changes, we are the ones that should be adapting to the wonderful lifestyle that Costa Rica is; not taking what we want from it and “never mind the consequences”.rf2crParticipantswami,
not sure if there is a commerical application but call Jim Aoki, he has lived there a long time and does windsurfing and fishing in the Lake. I am sure he could give you some ideas. Best to phone him, he is busy and not always quick to reply to emails. Can reach him at Rico Realty (Google that and it will get you to their website).
