Mediatica,
Thank you! I apologise for the spelling error. Right now I am frazzeled! I have 15 days to go before I leave and still so much to do. But – I’m so excited and can hardly wait to get there.
I went on Aerocasillas’s web site – and saw where you can sign up – I saw where they have the “basic”, gold, platinum and whatever the next one up was – I think I just need to get the basic for now.
Do they deliver at your house or do you have to pick it up somewhere? I will be renting in Atenas for now.

roberta3aMemberHi Marcia,
UPDATE FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COSTA RICA CONUSLATE – THIS MORNING
I called the consulate this morning and talked to Lia – the last two times I talked to 2 different people.
This is what Lia told me we need to do before we submit any info to the Northern California Consulate – and we can submit info by mail so they have time to review.
1. The Certified Birth Certificates we got have to be certified by the Secretary of States office in CA – the seal that is on the bottom of the birth certificates will not do. She gave me the telephone number to call in Sacramento – 916-653-3598.
She said to send the Birth Certificate to the Secretary of States office for authentication – they will issue a certificate and staple it to the birth certicate. Once this have been done this document is complete.
You have 6 months on this document.
2. The Non Criminal Report – you have to get this report from your local police department and have them notarize it. This document then has to be sent to the Secretary of States office to be authenticated.
The Secretary of States office is essentially authenticating the Notary Public and the non criminal report.3. You will need to get a letter from the Social Security Administration that you qualify for Social Security for X amount of dollary per month. That letter has to be Notarized as well by a Notary Public.
Once all these documents are done – send them to Lia and they then translate the documents and send them on to Costa Rica Immigration.
I told her that what I was told and she said that they realize there is mis-information out there and she gave me this web site:
http://www.costarica-embassy.org. This is the official web site and has this information on it.Again, she told me that we have 6 months to do this.
I am coming into Costa Rica the end of this month for a tour that is aimed at people who want to move to Costa Rica. This tour is put on by the Association Residents Costa Rica, of which I am a member. I’ll be back on February 6 and will let you know what I find out there.
I tried to call the Sacrament number for the Secretary of States office this morning, but go no answer. Will try again and let you know what instructions they give.

roberta3aMemberHello Charlie,
I am in this process already. All you need to do is visit your local police station and they can get the report, get you fingerprinted and get the documents notarized. The important thing – these documents can only be 3 weeks old ( per the CR Consulate here in Northern California) Once you have this information you take it to the CR Consulate in your state area and they will then need to translate it before they send it to CR immigration. There will be a fee.
Hope this helps.

roberta3aMemberHi Judy,
I too have made the decision to file for residency in Costa Rica. I will be taking a tour offered by Chris Howard for people moving there.
I will be leaving from balmy Northern California the 22nd of this month and returning the 5th of February. I then plan to move there upon my return from the tour.I have been doing a lot of research this past year and find there are several books you can get – Retirement In Costa Rica (amazon.com)
Scot’s books (all of them are great!) I also joined the Association of Residents Costa Rica and have gotten much information from them regarding residency, insurance, houses for sale, attorney’s and accountants, even bringing my dog. They sent me, via email, a lot of information on how to file for residency and they can help you do that.Scott’s forum is great. I hope to find out a lot about the questions you are asking so will let you know what I find out when I get back.
After doing a lot of research, I have decided to rent for 6 months before I buy any home there. I have also gotten the Institute of Languages Spanish course and am learning the language.I have decided to file for US Social Security and will qualify under the $600.00 per month requirements of the Costa Rican government.
I still have so many questions and I hope the tour will answer most of them. I will ask about the questions you have and when I get back I’ll email you and tell you what I found out.
Have a great New Year and let me know how you fared in the storms. We here in CA felt so bad for you guys!

December 21, 2006 at 5:26 pm in reply to: US companies outsourcing their operations offshore #180381roberta3aMemberHello Scott,
I totally concur with David McCurry. I am moving to Costa Rica and shortly. I have just sent applications and money to Chris Howard to take his tour on January 29th. I have also purchased all your books and – yes – I would like you to help me find a place to live.
Now to the more important issues –
#1 Do not promote Wal-Mart. Wal-Marts business practices are becoming orwellian! Recently, a supplier client of mine was told that if they wanted to continue to do business with Wal-Mart they would have to move their US operations to China. They have done this over the past year with over 100 suppliers here in the US. Plants that once manufactured prodcut parts for the major corporations are closing here at an alarming rate!
Further, the corporation is proliferating a technology so invasive that it is frightening. The technology – Radio Frequency Identification tags. This technology embedded in produts you and I will buy consists of a tiny RFID chip embedded in the product. This chip “talks” to “readers embedded in Wal-Mart doorwyas, shelves, potentially floors and ceilings. Sound to crazy to be true? I just found out my renewal US passport has an embedded RFID tracking chip!
The US government did not even encrypt the chip! Now, anybody or any corporation can scan my passport from as far as 25 feed from me and get my information. I am now a tracked human!Wal-Mart, Proctor & Gamble, Gillete (the makers of the razorblades, Hewlitt Packard and other companies have embedded these “spychips” into the packaging boxes, labels on products etc. without any notification that these chips can (and will) be read by the retailers that sell us our goods and the data gathered used to “profile” customers.
I will send you two books this week – please read them and get informed.
