Residents of Jaco, Costa Rica – Heads Up To Serial Killers

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com – I just got through clearing out a whole bunch of comments that had been posted over the past couple of days. Obviously my phone has been ringing off the hook, and I just finally got around to clearing out the backlog. In one of those posts someone said they had heard some “bar talk” from William Dathan Holbert and Laura Michelle Reese saying they had lived for some time in the area of Jaco, Costa Rica. Therefore, any members of the community of English speaking expatriates who live in or near Jaco, Costa Rica should do a head count. Have you seen these people before? Were they in your area before they came to Bocas del Toro? Did they “buy” or sell any property? They apparently had more than a million dollars in cash when they got to Panama, so that money had to come from somewhere. Did it come from Jaco, Costa Rica? Get busy, guys…

A video clip of the captured killers.

Some of their victims were fugitives from Florida that had been on the run with alias names for twenty years. This explains why the families of those particular victims did not step up to authorities to claim them as missing.
I hope they are able to retrace where the murderers have been over the years to close some missing persons files.

I’m in the southern zone close to the beach, and am in the planning stages for fruit tree planting and gardening. I have six acres with a creek on the bottom and overwhelmed with the choices that I have.Very difficult to decide with so many tropical factors that I have no idea about.
There are Howler and Capuchin monkeys that I see or hear daily close to the creek. I’m wondering if I’ll need to put something around the fruit tree trunks to keep them from climbing, or chicken wire around a vegetable garden for other critters…those sort of questions.
I’ve been gardening for over thirty years as a profession in Canada, and am really looking forward to learning about tropical organic gardening.
With all the different varieties of insects and animals in the southern zone, it must be quite a task to be totally organic.
My first diaspointment regarding flowers, was that I was told that strelitzia reginae doesn’t grow very well close to the beach as it’s too hot…i’m going to give it a go anyways. I have a great variety of heliconias growing wild and some planted, but strelitzia would be nice to grow around the house.
I have a Mimosa tree( not sure which variety) close to the house that I really enjoy. It attracts hummingbirds and all the leaves fold and close when it rains…really cool!

You can walk to the falls if you drive up to Platanillo and go in by a different trail. You have a good view of Diamante falls on the same road. Once the horse tour folks are gone, you’ll have the place to yourselves.

This organization is in the southern zone and might be able to give you some information for growing in coastal regions. http://www.permacultureuniversitycostarica.org/

I used them in february and my car broke down as well. I left several messages with the contact person’s wife and on his answering machine. He did not respond and finally answered his phone after two days.
From my experience they have crap service and their cars are poorly maintained.

I know a few people and have heard of many others that have moved back home after a few years in Costa Rica. There’s a noticeable increase in the homes for sale in my area too.
Boredom, culture shock, not adjusting to the hot climate, missing freinds and family, and certainly the economy are the main reasons.
Once you’ve decided on a specific area, you should rent and spend an entire rainy season there to see if it’s for you.
There’s a survey to win a trip on the WeLoveCostaRica site that you could use as a tool to establish your “wants and needs”, and then check if those things are available in the area you choose to buy or rent a house.

Most service providers sell phones that are only for their network. Therefore, chances are that the phone is locked.
The sure-fire way to see if your phone is locked or unlocked is to insert a SIM from a different carrier in it. If it functions properly, it is unlocked. If not, then its locked.

You might find some helpful information here. It’s also important that the phone is unlocked.

If you were to visit Ojochal today for the first time , it would be hard to imagine what it looked like only twenty years ago. Groceries were a days horse ride to Cortes and alot of the land was a cashew farm. I haven’t been established there for that long but have been visiting for quite some time.
There’s always been a good relationship between the Ticos and gringos as the town has grown.
As stated above, some of the devellopers and new citizens have stepped up in a big way to help out the community and continue to do so.
I receive e-mails from the seguridad committee whenever there’s been a theft or other incident, complete with descriptions of the theives and vehicles if available.
My neighbor behind me beeps his security alarm when a stranger shows up at my house if I’m away, and my other neighbor will e-mail me if there’s anything suspicious.
It’s comforting to know that everyone watches out for each other and it creates freindships at the same time.
Crime is on the rise regardless, but alot of the residents of Ojochal are trying to make a difference and I’m happy to be part of such a community.

    Another happy thought…

Just finished eating some fresh strawberries with an unusual twist, and thought I’d share.

    1/4 cup sugar
2 tbsps of good quality balsamic vinegar
    1/4 tsp pepper
16 or so strawberries, larger ones cut in half
Marinade and stir once in a while for 3-4 hours at room temp.

Pepper and balsamic vinegar on strawberries?
Yup!! Had them on vanilla ice cream and it was deliceous.
The recipe is also good as part of a spinach salad.
    Enjoy

Gosh, what have I done? Now I suppose we’ll need yet another branch of the forum for recipes, after the politics and religeon branches are up and running.
