I live part-time in Playa Hermosa, your next door neighbor. My wife and I filed for legal residency last month, including making a four hour drive to San Jose, for fingerprints. Our costs were around $4,000. Neither my wife nor I am fluent in Spanish, this included the best advice, service and hand-holding through the entire process, that money can buy! We have an excellent attorney, and friend. She also recently opened a new office in Coco. If interested, I would be happy to provide you with her name.
SailorMemberAnd I have a bridge to sell you in Tibet! I’m sure he could easily obtain several of the CIA helicopters available throughout Costa Rica.
SailorMemberI would recommend Playa Hermosa, where I currently live, and Playa del Coco, were my boat is moored. The area consists mostly of Ticos, Ticas, expats, and very few tourists. If you like the beach-town feel, only a handfull of people on the beach, these two areas would be worth a visit.

I am a three tour combat vet, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. I agree, in terms of American’s caring, or lack there of! I for one, in light of the ongoing cashless society, chose to build a portfolio of diamonds. The FED is currently on a monetary engineering agenda. Diamonds are easy to secure, carry, resell and no reporting requirement.SailorMemberDavid,
Thanks for your informative insights! My wife and I will be filing for Costa Rican legal residency, next month. I currently have a private bank account at BCT. Like many others, I have also been receiving conflicting bank deposit and withdrawal information.SailorMemberGreat question. It appears Portugal and The Netherlands have found solutions to their drug issues. Crimes in both countries have vastly dropped, and, free drug counselling is available in both countries. Let’s be clear, it is not a war against drugs, it is a war against the people. Drugs have been around since the beginning of creation, and will continue to be around, long after the human species has departed! In addition, the war against drugs, was initiated on a racial basis, starting with the slaves and cocaine, then, marijuana and the mexicans; see “The Emporer Wears No Cloths.”

SailorMembercostaricabill,
Thanks for the tip!! I will try that the next time I make our purchase.
SailorMemberI cannot comment on Black Angus beef. However, many of my expat friends in Guanacaste steered me to a butcher, in a strip mall, across the road from the Liberia Airport. The beef is from Nicaraqua, great quality, and can be cut with a fork.
SailorMemberI remember reading a Costa Rican article online, in reference to the best doctors in Costa Rica. Unfortunatly, I do not recall the exact site. However, I do recall making an internet search for “Best Doctors In Costa Rica.” In my case, I located several excellent doctors in Guanacaste.
SailorMemberI am one of many, who now pay the new property luxury tax! Prior to the new tax, I had been considering purchasing another beachfront. Well, that is no longer an option, considering the new luxury property tax. Instead, I will just buy another yacht, keep it registered in Panama, moored in Guancaste……and write-off the boat expenses, on my federal income tax!
SailorMember! would argue, that the current crime situation in Costa Rica, is not entirely a narco situation. Rather, as in all other parts of the world, it has evolved into a two caste system, the haves and the havenots. The crime in Costa Rica is not only land based, it is also sea based. I often sail out of Guancaste on my private sailboat. I have had two instances of attempted boardings while at sea. Unfortunately, for them, I’m retired Special Forces, and my twin ladies, Colt 911, .45s also accompany me at sea. I still often wonder how long it took them to get back to port, with .45 holes in their hulls and their engines!

Yes, Costa Rica is a gem. Tahiti is only about a 12-14 day sail from Guanacaste. I’ll keep you in mind! Also, the greatest fact about investing in diamonds: No IRS reporting, easy to secure and transport! Pura Vida.SailorMemberThanks for the recommendations. I will be shipping a vehicle and container in three months. After some research, I will be retaining Zeller.
