Vegasknite, You are misinformed this is all about taxation. The reason why the law was changed to make internet gambling illegal primarily was because of taxation and not being able to control the money going over seas. It was only this last couple of years that the law changed in the U.S. to facilitate the nabbing of Costa Rican CEOs. Since there is no boundaries to the internet web does that mean that all services and goods should be taxed that is done thru the net? Maybe people are going to have to put on their web sites disclosures that if anyone lives in certain countries they are excluded participating in those web sites? I don’t think that the creators of the web and the net had this in mind when they created it. (i know it was the military that was the first with the net)
What really is the problem is that many people in the U.S. wants to regulate the internet e biz. Dose Scott pay taxes to each of the individual states that a book goes to?? I don’t know maybe Scott can shed some light? ECommerce is affecting many people and is changing because of the U.S. Its easy money for the states to receive if people are buying stuff on line including making bets.
Yes, the U.S. does use price controls to control markets such as bananas, pineapple and other goods. My wife a Costa Rican Economist will be the first to prove to you that the U.S. states how much they will pay for a item because they are the largest market for them. This drives out the competition and leaves many countries in protest!
The U.S. has a long arm and will use it to their best interest so anyone in the E commerce needs to take heed.
P.S. hahahah Scott you must have been tired of seeing the smaller post to come up with this one…hahahah
scottbensonMembershutting down the sports bookies is just another nail in the Costa Rican coffen.
If the CEOs of the companies would never have stopped in the U.S. they would not be in jail.
The U.S. has too much influence in how many countries do biz, this year gambling next year prostitution, the year after that something else. Slowly Costa Rica will look like Puerto Rico!
Yes, internet gambling is illegal in many of the states how ever it is not illegal in thousands of countries around the world. Costa Rica does not owe taxes to the U.S. Only gringos owe money to the IRS. Many of the CEOs of the gambling companies were not even U.S. expats.
There are many types of transactions that we do on the internet which generate money in the states of the u.S. how ever you don’t pay taxes on that.
Does Scott pay taxes with every book that he sells on this site to the U.S.? I don’t know but more importantly I hope he does not have too. I belive that the internet was not ment to be another way to recive income for the U.S. goverment. This was probably all started from some activists and pointed for more government interventions and since some lawyers had seen dollar signs they all pointed to Costa Rica.
Personally I don’t care about the gamblers, just like smokers they can make up their own mind what they want to do with their money. Tough luck if they choose to spend it with the bookies. Just like smokers if they want to smoke and kill themselfs thats their biz. If gamblers want to lose their homes that theirs!
scottbensonMemberJose, can you also clarifie about work permits. I see many people posting beliving it is easy to work in Costa Rica.
Is it true that really the only way to get a work permit is either be married to a Costa Rican, recive a tempory work visa with employeers approval, or become a citizen.
scottbensonMemberLotus,
If you husband is in logistics, ask him to get a hold of the U.S. embassy in CR. If you want some more info you can email me since I will be doing a short tour there in August to October I have found some connections that might help.
scottbenson@hotmail.comscottbensonMemberI have to second the last two posts! If you look at the CR embassy web site you will find the requirments. In CR it dose not matter where the company’s orgin is from (North American, Canada, what ever)You have to have a work permit to make money if you are not a citizen of CR. If you want a work permit under the Temp works catigory you will have to show that as stated in the previous post. The employer will have to write a letter stating why a Ticos job is being replaced by a foreginer. The only other way to get a work permit is to be married to a Costa Rican or a citizen of CR.
Even after you get a work permit, don’t think that most Tico companys will give you a open arms welcome and hire you before a tico! Many companys will be protective of Ticos jobs.
This topic has been addressed before extensivly maybe scott could have a link to the embassy rules regarding work permits?
The best option is to become self employeed!

scottbensonMemberI understand your issue with training wheels how ever the best way to experiance a culture is to dive in with both feet. If you really want to understand and learn the language get associated with a Tico instead of the north american community.
Its ok to find gringos all over CR but you won’t learn the language correctly unless you hear and speak it constintly. Personally when I am in CR with my family I will never hear english unles my wife speaks it to me or one of my wifes family members trys to speak. It forces me to learn it really fast! The only problem that I have is when my wife corrcts my spanish too much. hahaha
scottbensonMemberJust talked to my wife, which is a tica and her family employees 8 doctors now in San Jose.
She said there are two medical schools
the first is a private school and that is called UACA.
The second is the University of Costa Rica in San Jose. She was saying that if you are a forigner you will have to pay double the amount for tuition than the Ticos do. This is the new law for the education compensation.
How ever her understanding is that the medical liscens does not transfer into the States system?
Her family employees a lot of cuban doctors since they are able to imigrate to CR.
Hope this is helpful!

scottbensonMemberIssues with commissions, paying for showings would be a issue with brokers and commissions.
scottbensonMember“we listed it was 5 x’s what I paid”
Maravill, why don’t you list it for just twice the amount you paid or three times, maybe this will sell quicker?Just a thought because then you don’t have to worry about rentals and you will have plenty of cash in your hand to on with life?
Just a question, is the price that you have it at now under all of your competitiors? Is it set to a level where when a buyer comes in they say hey this is a great buy?
Many sellers belive that if they put their listing price just a little above the price that they want to get that after dealing they will get a price that is ok for them. This is the wrong kind of thought for todays market. When I list a home it is at a point where the home is going to move and my sellers will next enough money to move on. Put it at the rock bottem price and stick to that price you will find that most buyers will pay full price if they feel that it is worth that price.
scottbensonMemberBoy I am glad Minnesota isnt that desperate. Lotus how do you work with out a MLS? How ever I have seen some listings offering trips and bonuses lately. Personly the upper bracket homes that I have sold lately only the price works. That and most sellers are paying closing costs but that is to be expected in todays market.
scottbensonMembermaravilla,
I want you to do somthing for me. Take the net sheet that your realtor gave you and put a piece of paper ontop of the listing amount. Then look at the last line where it will shows net to seller.
Ask your self is it worth to wait out a market for 6 months or longer for 10,000? 20,000?, 40,000? Are you making engouh money to purchase your next investment? Ask your self am I making more than what I put into the house? If you have owned your home more than 5 to 10 years you most likely are still making a lot of money on your investment.
Regarding the market, well I know of a lot of buyers that would have called the seller vultures for purchasing a home and fliping it in less than 6 months to make more than $100,000.
Personally I am glad that the market it correcting itself because the inflation was getting too much and over heated. Today is just a normal market like when I came into the biz in 93. Except the rates are not double digits!
scottbensonMemberIf you really want to sell your home I would suggest that you lower your price. I don’t know what your situation is but in todays market I would lower it be low your competitiors. Many of the homes that expire on the market is because they are maybe only 10,000 more that what the market is willing to bear. I have sold many homes by just droping it be low the market by 5,000 you would be supprised on how that works.
Again I don’t know much about your market but even in the worst of markets homes do move. Todays market is only different because most sellers have a mind set that their neighbors sold for such a price a year ago. Well todays market is different than a year ago.scottbensonMemberIn minnesota the bubble was a soft landing, the spring market is picking up and I belive that we are going to be better off than most of the states in the country.
So far the buyers are out there but you can’t over price your home. You must be be realistic and forget about testing the markets.
scottbensonMemberSpeak for your self, last night a client of my just accepted a offer on a listing that I have. They neted a lot more than they paid for the house 6 years ago….Even though they came down 30,000 they still are walking away with a crap full of money and buying their new home at a discount.
