Others are people that are living in Costa Rica which are illegal and now following the residency laws of the host goverment or are using Costa Rica to run from the laws in other nations such as Colombia.

Well Vegas, you might be right about the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. How ever I believe in the near future Costa Rica is going to have to get tougher and restrictive on the influx of foreigners into their country other wise they will wake up and find more than a quarter of their land will be owned by none ticos.

In a small country like Costa Rica (half the size of Minnesota in area) they will not be able to handle the influx of foreigners with out some kind of impact on the average Tico. If the speculators are true, in the future a million gringos living in Costa Rica will have a large impact and not really a positive one.

I hope that the new laws will have some teeth and slow down the perpetual tourist and others.

    Daila,
You are absolutly right about the low life that is coming into the country, I hear that from my mother in law that is a tica in Tres Rios Cartago and my wifes family that live in Cartago and San Jose. They have some great jokes about Nicas, hahaha since my mother inlaw has a rotie.

How ever I know that it is not new to Costa Rica they are just having more of a influx because of the great economic situation. It just is interesting on how people in the U.S and around the world precive central and south america and crime riden countries. The truth is that in the U.S. state by state it is much worse than Costa Rica will ever be.
of course when we take our rotie out for a walk we don’t have to many problems with crime. hahaha

I know St Gregory is a good school because my wife’s niece went there and they were happy with the teachers. This is also close to our house!

How ever my wife wants to put our son or daughter in the school that she went to which is in San Jose, it is the oldest school in the country!

I guess Vegas you should ask has Costa Rica changed in the past because of political upheavals from their neighbors from the north or the south?

I would have to say no, this is why during past events Costa Rica had floods of people coming to Costa Rica. Costa Rica has and will be a stable government because of the practice of democracy. As for the crime issue I know that when I see the news in Minnesota and see a homicide almost every day I believe Costa Rica dose not have problems like in the U.S. You must ask your self do you feel safe in Vegas? What I hear from the gossip is Vegas is a pretty bad place to live! Again this is all perception and maybe there is no truth!

I also have had the opportunity of traveling parts of Europe and Africa in the last three weeks and I can say that I would feel much safer walking in the middle of San Jose with a $100.00 hanging out of my pocket than in Frankfurt Germany, Tibias Republic of Georgia or any of the other major cities in countries that I have seen in the last three weeks.

I would have to differ on the issue of west and east germany better off.
If you ask any German on the west side they will say it has hurt their pockets by picking up the tab for east Germany. I have talked to many cabie since I have been here and they all say there just are not enough jobs which shows since their unemployment is in double diggits,

How ever I would like to ask this question for all of the retirees in the room.

What would happen if your past employer said sorry but your pension plan is now gone. You will have to recive your money from the goverment pension play and only recive 35 cents on the dollar.

This happend to my cousin and some of my friends that flew for Delta and US Air. Most people were not willing to pay 900.00 for a airline ticket to Costa Rica. This in return set the airlines in a spiral and now they have cut pensions and health care plans and wages.

This issue is not only for the North Americans ask many airlines in the EU what they think about Ryan air? Where you can fly from Germany to London round trip for less than 100 dollars.

    These postings are interesting,
I might have missed this but in everyone of these postings not one mentioned the reasons why the U.s and the U.K is out sourcing,
I have had to write a paper on this recently and the top two reasons is Health care and Pensions,

I have to ask this question to all that has posted,

Do you pick your airline tickets because of price or the airline?

Would you pay 25% more for your automobile to pay for health care and pensions for employees and past employees of GM,Ford, and all of the u.s. companies.

Until the U.S. is ready to cap the salaries health care workers, caps on drugs and insurance companies, ect than we will continue to have outsourcing.

I just think it is funny on how people with higher education is now becoming aware of the situation and are in the panic mode. Now since their jobs could be on the line its a issue!

I am currently in Germany and if you think the U.S. has problems! come to Germany and see their really bad economic situation due to high cost of social programs and high unemployment. If you ask any German you will get the same answer the economic situation is bad and many people are out of work!

I believe we have to keep something’s in perspective
1st the size of the U.S
    2nd the employment rate
3rd the opportunities (most people that I have asked on my trips what they want and 90% will say they want to live in the U.S because of opportunities.

Well Deborah, I am sorry if I am assuming any part of your question. How ever I read your question asking two parts. 1st would the child recive dual residency 2nd would having a child in Costa Rica give the parents residency rights?
Is this correct were you asking these questions? This is why I stated my last post the way I did and copied and pasted your question.

My wife and I are glad that you have fell in love with the Ticos, I can understand why. My question is if your son and daughter in law come to Costa Rica and have a child will they put a burden on the health care system of Costa Rica? Are they looking to stay in Costa Rica to make a permemnt home? If so are they looking at working in Costa Rica?

If all of these are answerd yes, then Costa Rica has a problem. 1st the health care system was originaly made for only Costa Rican as a small country they cant continue to support other groups of people.
2nd as stated in many posts Ticos are highly educated people, how ever they also have a highly compeitive job market. This does not have room for expats to come and try to compete for jobs. This is why the laws are what they are and prevent non ticos from coming and taking jobs away from them.

Again if your question is only for the reason of dual citizen ship that is great for what ever reasons.

This would give the child dual citizenship and “them residency I believe.”

The intent of having a child in Costa Rica for the purpose of residency is illegal in Costa Rica. When I was refering to illegal it is not the dual citizen ship for the child but the issue that you would think that you would be able to have residency because your child was born in Costa Rica. (which is not true)

My wifes father was born in Nicaragra and at the age of 2 was brought to Costa Rica where he had lived until he died at the age of 73. Even though he had 3 children that were born in Costa Rica he would not have been able to have residency for that sole reason, He was married to a tica and came when the laws where much different this let him become a legal resident.

Again it comes down to doing the right thing! Coming to Costa Rica and trying to side step the laws will hurt the gringos and will make the Costa Rican goverment create and implement new laws to curb the problmes. So in this case the family should follow the laws and come up with the requirments instead of having babys just to have residency in CR.
(when I told my wife a tica about this she almost fell over dead laughing)

Hey I know where this school is, isn’t it up on top of the ridge looking down into the valley? I belive this is also a french speaking school as well.

There is a housing development on that same ridge where the homes start at about $800,000 with a 9 hole golf course.

Wow, this is considered illegal in Costa Rica! As most of us in this forum would say if anyone is coming to Costa Rica to live please do it legally!
I believe now I have seen everything! jajajaja

I have a different perspective of Sarcasm and Costa Rica, since my mother in-law is a practical joker and brings sarcasm to the next level and is 100% Tica maybe she might not be the norm? or maybe it is because she is confortable with me and can be herself. I belive that many Ticos put on a different face when they are with gringos and maybe this person that wrote the artical is just seeing one side of the picture. One of the reasons why I say this is because I have done a little social experamenting. Somtimes when my wife is shopping in down town San Jose with her mom, I will be alone and strike up a conversation with a Tico. They will act all proper and stuff until I tell them that I am married to a Tica, then all of a sudden 95% will act differently and get more freindly and less proper.

As for politically correct I know that is not in the Ticos vocabulary! haha. In the U.S. we have gotten to the point with Social awarness classes, Diversity classes and Sexual harrasment classes that we have addapted the politically corretness police and it has changed our social behaviors which create us not to be able to speek our minds freely. Its like when my mother in-law sees a African Costa Rican??? She says Neagro! Which she has many friends that she calls Neagro and that is what they want to be called! Well in Minnesota she did that once in a mall and my wife had to explaine to her that is not excepted in the U.S.

I would have to differ with you on the Costa Rica, U.S. British thing though. My wife says that Costa Rica has always tried to emulate the U.S. in many ways. Even when you look at the News in the mornings it looks like they could be in Miami or somthing. The big difference though is they like to show women in bikiniis..hahahah
My wife told her mother a couple of days ago that we are expecting and her family went crazy because the baby could have blue eyes and they will call it a gringitotico or tica.

Again this is just my experiance.

Well I think times have changed at least in the area of San Jose, if you go to any of the movie theators its like in the U.S. nothing new except for the VIP.

99% of the time when I go to Tres Rios theator there are no Gringos in the theator but that is because that side of town dosent have very many gringos.

I would have to agree with GringoTico,

How ever I do love the VIP theator in Tres Rios Mall, its great to go to see a movie and sit in a recliner while a person comes to take your order for food.
