A interesting topic that has not been explored here is the yearly bonus (juinaldo)that is one month pay is manditory by law. Every employer big or small has to save one months worth of a bonus to give to their employees. If the employees don’t recive the money the goverment will go after the employers, they will send the police to recive the money if they have to.
Also by law all employers have to have supply health insurance with the employee. In Minnesota small towns such as Grand Rapids, Wal-mart has provided employment. Most of the people that work there are happy because other wise they might be on welfare.
scottbensonMemberlotus, I belive you are right! This is why a big screen TV costs a lot more in CR than in the U.S.
Many people don’t realize that if they pay the ticos more money than the price of the goods have to go up for the consumers. This means that the average tico would have to make more money to pay for those items.
Again when you come to Costa Rica you can’t think it is the same as U.S. I would ask most ex pats that if they have a gardner or a house keeper do they pay the Ticos U.S. competitive wages? That means if you have a house keeper they should be making more than a hundred dollars a week in CR right?
As for wal-mart I belive they already have bought Hipo Mas right?
scottbensonMemberPersonlly I like to take the round abouts and the high way. Since our home is on that side of town. It all depends on the time of day! We can normally get from Tres Rios to the other side of the city and to the air port in about 45 min, if my brother in law drives its about 20 min.

They have about 30 or 40 people on the phones and they have about 1,000 hits on their web sites a day.
Last August my wife and I stopped by to talk to their sales manager and he introduced us to what he said was one of the owners.
After that visit I had recived about 4 calls telling me that the price was going up and I had to buy quickly. They use the hard sell to get their clients to buy.
scottbensonMemberWell I think this is a misconception that everything is cheap in CR.
In the Tres Rios mall where are home is next too the prices are just as high or higher than in the U.S. This mall is very busy and has all of the big name stores. How ever I love the VIP seating in the movie theator that is the same price as in the states. How ever you get to sit in the reclining chairs.
November 27, 2006 at 9:32 pm in reply to: Wellington Trading Group S.A. San Jose, Costa Rica #180110scottbensonMemberMy wife and I have been to their offices in San Jose. I will have to say they are very impressive on their arm turning operation. I would never send any of my clients to them because they are only in it for the dollar.
I talked with one of the owners and he really didn’t care too much except if I was going to by a lot.
scottbensonMemberWell Scott, many of us might be in the same situation. Some questions have to be answered first.
Are you married to this tica? If so, it makes getting residency much easyer. You will also be able to get a work permit because you are married to a tica.
Do you travel to Costa Rica for your wifes family? I know this helps alot just on learning spanish it has helped me because I have to learn it to interact with my wifes family. They really have pushed me the greatest to learn because they want to include me!
How ever most employers want and need you to speak spanish if you are going to work for a Costa Rican company still the natural language of Costa Rica is spanish and isn’t going to change anytime soon. hahaa
I have been married to a tica for the last five years, my wife and I have just found out that my wife is exspecting our first child! This has change our future goals a lot because now it has speeded up the time frame for us to move back to CR, since we want our children to live next to her family. So I do understand what your question is how to make a living in CR! First I would have to say is learn spanish! Second start net working with her family! Third look at all the posibilitys like self employment or different careers, because resturant supervisors dont get paid a lot and they have a lot of ticos going for those jobs. Another issue that you will come across is that a lot of employers will discriminate against you because you are a gringo!
In our case we are lucky because my wife dose have a job opertunity with a international organization that she worked for before she left CR. How ever for myself I am thinking self employment is the way!
scottbensonMemberTo tell you the truth yes I do have a problem with people coming to Costa Rica and trying to make a living! This is a small country and Tico’s don’t have the opportunities like in the U.S. where jobs are plentiful. What jobs that are here have hundreds of applicants that have master degrees!
Many North Americans’ think that they can just come to Costa Rica and get a job and live the Pura Vida life. Many have the miss understanding that they are better qualified for the job than a Tico because they are gringos and can speak English and might have a collage degree.
What I am trying to say is that if you come here do it legal!( I am not trying to put you down I am trying to open up your eyes) If you are going to live in a host nation don’t come with the idea that people will open their arms and give you a job because that is not what will happen. If you look at the last post Kim wrote that a family came to live and has started working for themselves. They did not compete for the call centers, factory, or other skilled jobs because they cannot they are illegal. Some day this could come to bite them because they are receiving a income, they could lose everything. Also it is true that the president does want to start clamping down on illegal tourist that are receiving a income.
The reason why I question your finance is that you have to meet the new qualifications for residency to be legal. If you are going to gamble and become a perpetual tourist, you should know that most employers would not hire you legally with out a work permit. Just trying to give you the straight facts not the hype!
scottbensonMemberWell the biggest hurtel you would have is to have a American company write a letter explaining why you are more qualified than the thousands of well highly educated costa ricans. Unless you have a freind in high places but even that dose not work always any more. You will have to get a work permit and to do this you have to meet qualifications. CR is very serious about protecting Ticos jobs!
My wife is a tica and is highly educated, one of her co workers in Costa Rica was a gringo. He was able to get a job but he was married to a tica too, which is really the only way besides sponsorship. He also spoke incredible spanish, Berlitz didn’t even have a class level for him they had to customize a course for him.
Even than dont think that you will get any where near the saleray that you would make in the U.S. Ask your self why would any one want to pay you more than a Tico if they can get a highly educated Tico to do the same job? Then there is the problem that Tico’s want to protect the good jobs for Ticos, can you blame them?
Yes, there are many illegal gringos working in CR but you won’t see them in companys like Intel or other American companys unless they were employees transferred to CR or are legal. You will find most of them self employed and trying to find a slant to make money like internet based biz. Now since the gambeling net work has been disrupted that has taken some jobs away, how ever most of those jobs went to collage students that were learning english.
Just a question? How will you be able to make the new financial qualifications for residency if you need a job in CR?
Well, any ways hope you find what you are looking for! What ever you do, do it legally because I understand that the days of perpetual tourism will be slowing down and CR is going to tighten up their rules. If you get caught and deported you could lose your car, home and everything.
scottbensonMemberYep just what I thought, You don’t want to face the real problem.
This is what happend in the 1990’s and it is a cyle. Some people don’t want to connect the dots and be politicaly correct. They want to blow smoke and say it is our goverments fault while the rest of the world has too suffer and create unstablity.
Beslan, Darfur, Somalia, 911, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Palestine and many others are all connected. They are all influenced by the Arab Muslim Militants. That will do anything to terrorize to get their way and try to convert as many by sword. The Arab Muslim terrorist do have a complex networks in place that reaches through out the world. (Read the 911 report and you will see some of the places they reach) The system was originally put in place to recruit members to fight against the Russians in Afghanistan then later it expanded to Chechnya and now all over the glob.
Beslan, Arab Muslim Militants were involved with the planning and attack. For the purpose of Muslims in Chechnya which they want to make into a Sharia state. (I guess you didn’t want to look at the web site that was posted)Just because the Russian goverment didn’t put gaurds outside dosent mean that it is right for a massaqer to happen!
Do you think that those terroist would not attack another soft target?Darfur, Arab Muslim Militants are slaughtering Africans because they are too black and not Muslim enough.
Somalia, Osama Bin laden even stated that in the 1990’s they sent Arab Muslims to help arm the Somalia war lords to fight against the Americans. Today CNN, Fox, Reuters and many other agencies reported that Arab Muslims are embedded and are Inside and at the boarders of Somalia creating Sharia Law and killing people that don’t convert.
(Two years ago I was in this region)Iraq, easy, Arab Muslim Militants coming across the boarder and creating insatiability to try to make the U.S. become defeated and prevent democracy. This is a strategy that has been used in all of the wars. (read a book called My Jihad) Now the stratigie has become to create a cival war and hopefully stop democracy and create Sharia law.
This is why the Arab Muslims are upset! In all of the interviews with Osama Bin laden he stated that Palestine and Israel with the Americans backing them is number one reason for their fight. His view point is that the Americans don’t do enough to solve the problem of Palestine!
I have talked to many Arab interpreters and some were people that helped set up the government in Iraq. They all said the same why the problems that we have to day has come to surface (Palestine) and that we didn’t do enough.Personally I was all for the Israeli government leaving the boarders of Palestine until the kidnapping of the Israeli soldier that started off the most recent event. This showed they don’t want peace instead the want to create war and unrest in that region as well as to eradicate all the Jews.
I could go on but it would be fruitless, because there will always be people that don’t want to connect the dots, instead it would be easier to blame the U.S. government and say it is oil or other means. To say that none of these have ties with Iraq and Afghanistan does show how people are not looking at the facts! Instead they want to say we are killing innocent Muslims that are hiding and embedding terrorist with weapons in their homes.
They don’t want to recongnize that for the Arab Muslims views this issue as a religious war not a war for oil.God save Costa Rica,
Pura Vida!scottbensonMemberWell Ripple and Jenny,
So far you have just repeated and repeated nothing, You guys have not answered my question of what I have posted.
You have only created rehtoric that is normal for the crowd of people that don’t understand the conflict.
A.) 2 reasons why old sama said 911 happend
1.) Palastine and Isreal (the top reason)
2.) U.S. or what they call the infedels on Mecca Soil. (why we were there to fly a no fly zone that was created by the U.N.)B.) YOU STILL HAVE NOT ANSWERD MY QUESTION about the Massacre at Beslan. ( I don’t know if you guys really know or have heard about this event)instead you want to point out issues that don’t have marrit
and try to cloud the real issue. This shows me that you guys really don’t understand the Middle East and probley have never been there. Sorry to say but this does show of some ignorence!
Until you get to the bottom of the problem you will always find other reason to blame and point fingers at. I guess if you want to keep the rose colard glasses and let another incident happen like maybe a bombing attack in a school or maybe a chemical attack at the mall of America, this is the kind of utopia you might be looking for.Like we say as men and women in the armed forces we would rather be fighting on their land than have to fight on our door steps! This is what the Russians and many other countries have learned in the past.
Oh by the way you might want to look at this link and learn why the terrorist don’t want to play with a bear!

scottbensonMemberWell thank you jenny for the support that you give to the service men, I do understand for you it must have been difficult as a wife to endure the issues that your husband went thur with the Vietnam war. How ever I don’t think I will be saying 20 years from now that Islamic terriorst will be my friends. I
This is not another Vietnam the reasons why we have conflict all over the world is a religious one for the Muslims and for the U.S., Russia, France and other countries it is freedoms.I have served in the Air Force Resevers now since 1984, (I am 41 years old) I have been to almost every country in South and Central America except 2 (If you count the amount of times I stayed in Panama it would equal well over two years), I have been to numours countrys in Europe and Asia and all over the Middle East, I have been as far north as the artic circle, I have been participated in Just Cause, Both gulf wars, Bosnia, Nobel Eagle, Iraqi Freedom, numours humanitarian efforts that have been in the recent media. If you tally up my commitment just for this year alone (from January to now) it would be over 1 1/2 mounths (by December I will have 2 months 1 week)away from home above and beyond my two weeks a year and one week end a month. (this is all volunteer)I was activated for 749 days striaght from 2003 to 2005. This tempo has not changed for me since the early 1992.
I am a soldier but it doesnt mean that I am not educated on the topic at hand and I am not being directed by any commanding officer on my opinion of the middle east. Like the mass majority of the U.S. soldiers we do support the cause, there might be a half of a percent of the total force that is speeking against the war and is showing it on recent TV adds or other properganda.
It is ok that you don’t agree with the leadership and it is your right! This is why our fathers and grand fathers have given so much. How ever I belive that it is also all of our dutie to become more informed about world issues that are increasingly creating unstabablity that is affecting our society and not just listening to rehtoric. Issues such as what I posted previously. No one has commented on the Massacre at Beslan. Why? is it because we are too politicaly correct to say the real reason why that has happened? Do we not want to understand the conflict that is between Russia and Chechnia with the Militant Muslims and we want to burry our heads in the sand again?
This is why Gringos are differnt, Ticos know that their problems are from the north and the south boarders. They will openly say what their problems are and won’t try to be politicaly correct! My mother inlaw still calls a black tico Neagro, Not a African Costa Rican Tico.
scottbensonMemberyou are partaly right! Iraq has everything to do with not complying to UN sanctions and for 13 years flying over a no fly zone getting shoot at. Iraq has everything to do with Jihad war from the Sunies and Shiates. Iraq has everything to do with chemical war far. Iraq has a piece of the puzzle of the stability in the middle east.
scottbensonMemberSo where is the corilation between U.S. airlines and auto workers with the 500,000 Iraqis?
This Oil thing is really stupid! We have not recived one gallon from the Iraqis here in the U.S. Most of our oil comes from the north continental.
Again 98% of the votes from the U.S. military went to Bush and to think that we were doing blindly is showing ignoriance.
And Iraq is about a line that was drawn in the sand from the UN in the 1990’s. This is when no one would enforce any of the UN resolutions and would back down to Sadam!
But here is the question to you brad. What about the events that happend that I mentioned? Why is every one scurting around those events and only want to focus on Iraq? Have you ever been to the middle east?
scottbensonMemberRipple, do you have a theory of Cobie towers, the Embassy bombings, black hawk down and Somalia, Darhfor,Massacre at Beslan, chechnia.
Do you belive these are all propaganda and brainwashing?Last question, Have you ever been to Saudi Arabia on a wensday evening and seen the public display?
