I bet you like Barnie or watching Mr. Rodgers, or maybe you were a flower child from the past.

Yes, I have read your post in entirety but if you really think that your friends need you to take care of them, this could be taken in a condescending way. Personally I don’t need my friends to take care of me they are just that amigos.

Like I said maybe if you were from the west cost I can under stand why you are so touch feely kind of a person. This is why many cultures have problems with other cultures trying to come and live. Look at the British Empire and Africa or many other cultures that thought they were superior to others.

    are you all CRAZY???

Ok, I have to chime in because as some of you know I am a mixer upper.
Also I have to do this under cover because my wife does not like me checking on this site. Since my wife is a Tica and all of her family live in Costa Rica I might have a valid opinion.

The last couple of weeks I have been in Paraguay because we are moving here for my employer Uncle Sam. I would have to say either all of you are looking thru coke bottles or you are smoking the funny stuff.

Ticos are no different than any gringos that have come to live in their country. The only difference is they are not gringos, (how ever there are some cultural differences that are more related to the Latin culture and not just Costa Rica) As I read these post I have to feel its like you all are looking at the Ticos as some kind of specimen and studying them as a social project or something. Too many Ticos, this is kind of offensive and I believe that many gringos believe they are some what superior because they come from the U.S. and believe their culture is more special or something.

I have to laugh when I see many of these posts because it makes me think of how the Northerners think about the Southerners in the U.S. or like how the east cost thinks about the west cost. Like the sentence of “I make it a point to take good care of them and not take them for granted.” Do you really think they need you to take good care of them??? Do you think they can take care of themselves? I know that this is good hearted but really If a Minnesotan said those poor people from Mississippi they need to be taken care of, what do you think that would be considered?

As for the check not being paid at the table I can really say there are a lot of east cost people that have stuck me with the dinner bill.

It sounds like someone just woke up and smelled the coffee! hahaaha
If you think this is the only country in South or Central America that has all of the western style foods than you were sold a bill of goods before you came.

Do you think that Ticos want the option to decide for themselfs if they like Walmart?

CAFTA didnt bring Coke or Pepsi to Costa Rica it was here along time before the gringos came!

Raihnman, if you are interested in the laws regarding work permits you must go to the Costa Rican embassy web site and read the rules. Don’t listen to most expats because they want to slant the rules their way so they don’t feel that they are working illegally.

You will find out that there is only two ways to work in Costa Rica, A.) have a employeer sign for you B.) married to a Costa Rican —– or if you become a citizen of Costa Rica!

Other wise all others that are working and making money in Costa Rica such as a large amount of the sales agents of real estate are illegal!

Well guys its like this, if we look at the posts in the last week we have seen many people that are thinking about becoming or stating of being perpetual tourist and living a illegal life in CR. Mainly working with out the rights too!

I have stated many times that this is going to come back and hurt us as expats and it is! If we can’t respect the Ticos and follow their laws than why should we expect them to respect us as expats? Everytime when a person comes to find a job in CR this does take a job away from a Tico or a Nica!

I am currently in Washington DC and stopped by the CR embassy for biz and for personal reasons. I did talk to some of the embassy personal and they have stated that the residency rules have changed and it sounds as if more changes are going to come down the pike regarding perpetual tourism. These feelings have also been passed down from one of my wife’s cousins that work in the immigration office in CR.

Regarding the miss spelling of prpetural tourism, I am sorry! I guess some of us uneducated gringos can’t stick up for the fact of perpetual touism is wrong and does hurt CR.

At this moment it is 11:15 PM in DC and I have been in a C130 for the last 12 hours flying from here to Texas and back, I think I can get away from miss spelling a word or two!

The world has changed since the 80’s

Today the tactics that are being taught are not what they were in the past.

This school also has help many countries learn how to run their police force and protect their countries.

Countries such as Costa Rica need the education that the U.S. offers and provides and that is what this school evolved into.

The school that you are refering to used to be in Panama!

Well this is another funny thing,

My father in-law, a good tico, was caught with a 18 year old nica when he was 70. Today my wife laughs about it but at the time it took him a while before he was out of the dog house!

Well this is where most gringos dont understand the culture of ticos.
My brother in-laws all have girl friends or wifes that are much younger than them. One of my brother in-laws is dating a 19 year old and he is 32!

When I started dating my wife, her father and mother were happy to find out that I was nine years older than her (I was 35 and she was 26)and that I was divorced once. The idea of some one that has been around the relationship block was great for them and that is what they wanted for their daughter. They also were very surprised that I was a gringo because my wife always told them that she was not interested in the U.S.

Most Ticas would perfer older men for the simple reason that they belive older men are grown up. This is why you see man old ticos with much younger ticas!

I was just at Ft Benning yesterday!

“Though U.S. defense officials closed the original school, a Latin American military training facility, in 2000 and reopened it a year later under the new name and with a new curriculum, critics say the change was purely cosmetic.”

I wonder who these critics are? Do they have the up to date info on what the school teaches?

This is because the femiist North American women is feeling threatend. There is a growing number of men in the States that don’t want to be married to the feminist gringas and they are looking out side of the boarders for women that don’t have the same hang ups. The only way to combat this is for gringas to create laws to prevent men from mail order brides.

This was on the news and many talk shows a year ago!

    Hmmm I don’t belive that!,

An example is my wife! My wife worked for IICA as a economist, made good money for Ticos wages and had many great opertunitiess to work for the UN!

This is where you don’t understand! Costa Rica is not like most other countries in the way that women are highly educated! My wifes friends that are all highly educated women worked or are still working in the CR fed system, news papers and one of her closest is working for the UN. Most Ticas don’t go gringo shopping like you would think! This is a typical Gringa response to think that it is all about economics. Like my wife says a gringa thinks different than the normal latin women and this shows!

My wife will be done this June with her Phd in Economics at the University of Minnesota! When she is done she will be able to go back to CR and work for IICA with a higher pay. Since we are having our first child and we want to be closer to her family we will be moving back. She also dosent have citizenship in the U.S. and she dosent want to! My wife also came from a really poor family when she was younger and she never once thought about dating a gringo! None of her relatives date gringos! I am the only gingo in their family!

If your facts were correct I would belive that there would be more gringos married or dating Ticas in her family! How ever this is not true!
