Hi Steve;
Congratulations neighbour! Actually ours is a lot more traditional – Spanish Colonial actually – and a traditional build. We are across the road from the one you refer to and closer to the main entrance. Ours is up on the hill to the left as you enter Phase 6, the one with the round rancho.
As for progress; moving along okay and should be ready for us when we move down in November. They are working on the landscape now and we will be there mid September to check again. When are you planning to go back? I am opening a store in town in January (Royal Palm Interiors) and you should stop by when you are down next to say Hi!Shelagh
shelaghdMemberTry to cut and paste it into the translate window at http://www.ets.freetranslation.com and you will get a (loose) sense of the meaning (for free).
shelaghdMemberI love the area as much as you. We are building in Ojochal (where we have an Internet Cafe and some land lines too – but not everywhere yet).
My question is about the Canto Ballena development – how on earth did they get permission to build inside a protected area? The promo states that it is “nestled in the heart of Ballena National Marine Park”. That worries me. Am I alone?

shelaghdMemberThanks for the responses – they are reassuring. However, we are in the zona sur (south of Uvita), and although we can shop at Golfito how do we get things serviced (if needed). Will the store there arrange that for us or are we on our own? It is better to buy from a ‘regular’ store?
shelaghdMemberWe are leaving first thing tomorrow morning, so if you can let me know you lot # in time, we would be happy to take some pics for you. One thing to consider is that it may be a bit overgrown and not look so appealing. Robert will clear the lot for about $25 I believe, and if you like we can make that decision (based on the condition of the site) and get him to do that before we take the photos. Let me know how you feel about that.
Too bad you are selling, there will only be about 8 or 10 homes on Phase six thus far and we need more neighbours!
Looking forward to your reply.

shelaghdMemberWe bought in Phase 6 – the community lots. Our house in under construction now and we hope it will be completed April/May. I think they are selling Phase 9 or 10 presently and these are south of us, but we have not been to see them yet. We will be down mid-February to see how our house is progressing – perhaps we will see you there…
November 22, 2006 at 12:46 am in reply to: OwnCostaRica.com Anyone know anything about them? #174578shelaghdMemberWe are just back from another visit and are amazed by the work that is going on down there. I cannot give chapter and verse to prove the airport is a go – but all the signs are there. The unfinished highway south of Quepos was a hive of activity with crews and machinery working on a Sunday! There is a huge new hospital under construction in Cortez (near the new airport site) and I was told that on the day we arrived there was an official meeting of land owners and interested parties meeting with government officials to discuss the airport plans and address local concerns. The large hotel chain Barcelo has spent millions on land purchases in the area as have other developers. People do not throw that kind of money around without inside knowledge! I also heard that the land for the airport has actually been purchased, although I also heard that they are still doing their environmental studies…
I don’t think that there can be any doubt about this actually happening – but as you know, in Latin America timing is a whole other issue.That’s my update.
shelaghdMemberWe have bought land and are building a house with Own Costa Rica/Ventanas del Pacifica. We love the country and the southern Pacific region especially. As for the airport – it is a go. It is probably 8 – 10 years away, but plans are underway. Developers are buying up the Palm oil plantations in the area and land prices are on the rise again. The Govt. want to get the infrastructure in place before they put money into the airport. I believe one or more of the large hotel chains has also bought land near the proposed airport.
The dirt runway/airport at Palma Sur is perfect for a short hop to San Jose, and is only about 20 mins from the VDP properties and, as already mentioned, they fly out a couple of times a day.
This company (VPD)has been in southern Costa Rica since the late 1980’s and are well established. They seem to be very interested in maintaining the ‘wild’ nature of the land and do not tend to overdevelop. Also they do not go for the ‘hard sell’. They let Costa Rica do the selling for them…. I think your Home Show girls were a bit off the mark, but everyone has the opportunity to go down and stay free for a couple of days, ask all the questions they want and can walk away if not interested.
