it is the duty of every U.S. citizen to question what the government does; after all, we put them in power and they answer to us. our taxes pay their salaries. the rest of the world has a dim view of what the U.S. has done for the last 75 years, so to pretend that we condone this only gives us the appearance of being REALLY stupid! and how would we become targets because we question 46 warships, 7000 marines, and 200 helicopters on a supposed drug intervention (i can’t believe anyone believes that considering what’s going on in honduras right this minute and next year in nicaragua).
You are correct when you say we should question our government. Publicly admonishing is NOT questioning.

I guess your post proves my point. I bet you also believe the U.S. went into IRAQ for the oil.

You’ll notice this is my first post here, but I just had to throw in my two cents.

Stop being so paranoid! The U.S. has been working with LATAM for years! Most of it for the good. We as Americans continuously go out of our way to help those in need. Sometimes, that means doing things that some people may disagree with or question, and that is ok. At the end of the day, we do good will and the locals benefit. If you do not know what “humanitarian assistance” means, look it up!

I agree with most of you that the U.S. is in pretty bad shape and your decision to leave is respected. However, you do yourselves no justice when you bad mouth, attack or publicly question what the U.S. is doing. Do your research and speak from a position of knowledge, instead of being so paranoid and raising doubts and suspicions of U.S. motives. When a Costa Rican hears you speaking this way (or reading your words), they would assume you know something they don’t know.; after all, you are a “gringo(a),” like it or not. Why make yourselves the potential target?

Be the good citizen you really can be. Respect the country you have adopted, but most importantly show them that you are there because you love their country, culture, the people, etc. and not because you are running from something you choose not to deal with. Support all the good things the U.S. is doing there and do not support the things you disagree with. Remember that just because you disagree doesn’t mean it is not good. Let’s be good citizens and enjoy life!
