I cant believe the responses to the stolen passport theft problem. I sense a hate toward americans in this public forum by these responding people. Why dont you cut and paste a burning american flag in your response.
Why dont you accept the fact that theft is the national past time in costa rica. I prefer fishing, I personally had a computer stolen from a bed and breakfast hotel room in santa ana.
You gotta be kidding.
In my opinion the many thiefs in costa rica dont care if you live there they only want your tourist dollars and personal effects if they can get them, then you can pay your 26.00 and leave. Any person should be able to keep their belongings safely where they want,do you know how much an american passport is worth? I heard $10,000.00.
I used to eat at a bagelmans many times in the morning in escazu and after I recently stopped eating there I was told by a very reliable source that armed bandits came in one afternoon and stole everybodys computers enjoying their coffee and surfing the web, maybe even looking at this website!
hahaha get real.soflodougMembermany people from costa rica are travelling to los pueblos in panama near panama city. I saw a 61″ plasma for 2500.00 new in a major retailer. Costa rica prices are 2 to 3 times usa or panama prices for most everything.
soflodougMemberI would be careful and would not take my eye off the pig as it may be considered food in costa rica and they have very high tariffs for importing pork type products. I would find out if the aduanis, customs, even considers a pig a pet?
good lucksoflodougMemberI can also say that i personally observed construction workers on a high rise building not wearing a safety harness near the edge of a high floor on a building in panama city. I think there is a problem with the workers observing rules and regulations at times.
soflodougMemberI have been speaking directly to someone who is heavily involved with the development industry in panama and I was informed that in the colon area this problem started with a labor dispute where a construction worker was going to aggressively assault a police officer and was shot and killed in defense of the officer. This sparked other demonstrations, however I was told it was workers sitting in the street in panama city, spuratically burning tires however no other violence had occured against any persons. Again this was verbally reported to me and i have no other concrete information, however I deem the source reliable for the immediate panama city area and I also spoke to other people who eventually made it to work on the day this started with no other issues.
soflodougMemberDear Redbaragon, What you wrote here could not be more perfectly done. I assume you have professional writng ability and if not you have a gift. This thread is now falling into the category of beating a dead horse. People trying to discredit the reality in costa rica of crime have other motives or reasons. In my opinion if someone lives here for about a year they can get a feeling for what is basically going on here. You can ignore it,or as you commented about sprites comment which I perceive as having a false sense of security is not the answer either as innocent people may be dramatically harmed. It appears that costarica is about 20 or so years behind many other more civilized countries and this is a fact that one has to consider when living here. There are some enjoyable things here but to each his own. I do hope that sooner than later the situation improves. But some people not caring about other peoples experiences shows the kind of person they are as there is no other motive to speak on this open forum than to voice information within the guidelines and hopefully infom and assist other people from ones experiences or knowledge.
soflodougMemberoh I forgot contact the american embassy, they are a wealth of information and speak to a vice consul.
soflodougMemberI bought insurance from ins like anybody else here can and I was smart enough to have homeowners contents coverage,I dont know nor do I care If they are government agency or what they are but they are the only insurance available in costa rica and they paid me for what was stolen less of course my deductable.
Regarding your question to me about what are the national figures for how many people were held up at gun point here and my sources,I guess im flattered you think I am such a wealth of knowledge here ad have some great sources, but whatever the reason I am just like anybody else here and my information comes from sources such as neighbors, business contacts and im just a conversational type of person but just to touch the tip of the iceberg my ins agent office was robbed for thousands at gun point for the yearly marchamos you know the yearly car tax they collect,a past neighbor of mine was robbed a gun point to his head in bed after declaring he has thousands of dollars on him to customs immigration here that night I may add,a gringo private investigator here was robbed in his home office and beaten to crap then the crooks came back the sameday, and the police let them go right in front of him,or ask fishel pharmacy what happened there recently in one of their stores, Want to know more of my sources? I dont know if you live in costa rica or not but why dont you go to the oij police with a truck and copy some of the public reports if you can. Call ins and speak to their investigation department, that was one of my sources with their info on a rash of robberies where adt alarm company was saying they were not receiving the signals after several robberies in the recent past. my sources are people of all types here and business agencies and mutliple oonversations also.
Do you live here Mr Murray? If not then please come on down!
I hope this helps you.soflodougMemberSprite, thank you for the response,I guess to each his own, however can you guard my house, and find out who stole the poor peoples balinese house?
soflodougMemberRebaragon, you seem extremely intelligent and I am enjoying the responses here by such kind hearted people, however lets smell the coffee! Do you know how many people have been robbed at gun point in their own homes? Do you know how many people have had money stolen from online bank accounts? Do you know how many people have lost everything because of lack of regulation and penalties and have been so discusted they left the country some leaving their peoperty behind?
Putting the brakes on this is the first step, while creating programs and solutions, in the states city government has needed new faces too, they need a new crime czar to clean house and put a new way of thinking here, all I know if it is not an arrestable offense to steal under $500.00 ,the current officials who have been practicing this kind of enforcement need to have new laws on their desks or they need to go and its going to take in my opinion some new faces to bring this about. In my opinion this is an emergency!soflodougMemberDavidcmurray,I can tell you the costa rican government pays via ins insurance, they have the money appearantly being the only insurer in this country,I was robbed, they paid. They paid thousands to me. The oij police called me one time during the investigation and asked me if I knew who robbed me,while I heard a lot of laughing on the phone in the backround.
This is a way of culture here, like I said before, iron fist, new crime czar,I agree the behavior needs to change by way of stiff penalties and deportation of these criminals. If they are illegal here, put them on a bus in shackles, and take them home and throw them off the bus. We all worked hard for what we have, that needs to be respected,it doesent feel good to know that your rights are in reality not worth much in many circumstances. I didnt know many of these things before I started living here, the country has outgrown this old system just like the many infrastructure problems with property in the country. Were too intelligent to sit back and take this. Many people here just laugh when you tell the stories of robbery,i would like to see the nervous reaction of laughter removed off their faces and serious penalties in their minds for the future and a new system of power againt crime.soflodougMemberSprite,if the criminals want help then they can choose that while they are in prison, let them work in a factory, anything if they choose in programs, but the bottom line is we have a right to our property and no one has the right to steal it or assault anybody, whether they are poor or rich i dont care period. The brakes need to be put down on these crimes, I read on here that somebody had a balinese house stolen,my god, what else is possible? This is surreal, who would imagine such a thing is possible? Iron fist!!
soflodougMembercalada this sounds great but first the police have to legally be able and even interested in arresting the offenders.
soflodougMemberGood luck on your surgery david, dont worry once you receive the anestesia everything will seem ok,hahah
soflosoflodougMemberThe costa rica government has to pay the bill if you claim the insurance loss so why not pay a few pennies a day instead of thousands and keep these criminals locked up who cant afford to pay the fines, bail or lawyer costs and let them rot in jail,if they can pay to get out the next time it will cost them more, common sense is learned not a gift in life. hip hip hooray.
