If I may offer some insight. Several months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting two american gentlemen in Costa Rica; whom at first, I thought were merely tourists. During our endulgence of beer and protracted conversation, I mentioned to one of the men, that he resembled a friend/team member; during my Panama assignment. To make a long story short, one man was a CIA agent, the other was an IRS agent. Rest assured, there are forward operating bases for the IRS and CIA in Costa Rica.

I find this site very informative in regard to Costa Rica matters, and, other world issues. The non-Costa Rica information and issues presented by members, may not effect you directly; however, they may still effect family members and friends still residing in the U.S. Knowledge is power, I for one enjoy a diversity of subjects on this site. There are several other sites strictly pertaining to Costa Rica, However, there are no forum options.
soldierMemberjdocop is right on point. With over 30 years of paralegal experience, and complex litigation/medical malpractice experience; it is always the patient/client that suffers as a consequence. Unfortunately, quantity not quality of care, is the norm in the United States.

This is just another example of why some of us are leaving the U.S. For those who believe U.S. politics does not effect expats living in Costa Rica, the next person you bump into on the streets of Costa Rica; may be an IRS or CIA agent. The marines in Guam will assure that it does not tip over! My response to this Washington idiot, would have been, not a problem; because the earth is flat!
soldierMemberDuring my last few trips to Costa Rica, I have heard greater verbal prejudice towards nicaraguans and non-american blacks. Similar in terms of what you hear stereotyped upon african americans in the U.S. Because of my physical appearance, ticos and ticas automatically assume I am a tico, here in the U.S.; they assume I am hispanic. I am neither. Life is too short to waste energy on petty prejudice issues!
soldierMemberDavid,
What I should have said was, highly offensive to all intelligent people. President Obama and I both share a mixed heritage, with the same challenges; in American. There are four elements in the American foundation, money, power, sex and discrimination. I am glad I had the opportunity to participate in three different combat conflicts, so that racists and anti-americans can enjoy their freedom of speech; here in the U.S. On a more positive side, I regard Costa Rica as my new home, in more ways than one!
Scott recently posted a very interesting article, captioned, African Americans in Costa Rica, The Owens Story. I was somewhat shocked, that in the 21st century, there were still individuals coming to Costa Rica; and contaminating this beautiful country with their prejudices. I have felt more warmth from Ticos and Ticas, than I have from my fellow U.S. citizens; here in the U.S.
soldierMemberThis forum is a gold mine, I found it by accident, while conducting some Costa Rica reasearch. Other members have provided me with a wealth of on-the-ground-information. I joined the ARCR, about four months ago; they have provided excellent information, service etc.
soldierMemberThe two brain cell mentality of a certain segment of the American population, Rush listeners; is amazing. The conservative media, and the FCC, allow this prescription drug addict, racist, to pollute the airways! His latest racist comment “Obama, the magic negro,” is highly offensive, to all americans. No surprise, since 90% of talk radio is controlled by conservative media.
soldierMemberThe U.S. verbal combat regarding a national public option or socialized medicine; still is in progress. The Veterans Health Administration, is a government run health entity; for veterans. The medical care is outstanding, in most cases; when you can get an appointment. Then there is also, Medicare and Medicade, two other examples. Am I to assume that the national health care for veterans is “ok,” yet; not “ok” for the rest of the country. I for one, look forward to using my military Tricare health benefit, and, my VA Foreign Medical Program; in Costa Rica.

I stll have four years before retiring permanently to Costa Rica, the duty savings will be huge. Hopefully, Oscar signs the legislation before his departure in May!
soldierMemberKordan,
Thanks for the enlightenment.
soldierMemberThanks again David. Sorry, here in Philadelphia we call ATMs, a MAC (money access center.)
soldierMemberDavid,
Thanks for your response. The BCT bank does not offer a debit card at this time. They do offer a credit card, however, we must make another substantial separate deposit, just to obtain it. And, as you correctly mentioned in your previous post, there is a high interest rate. If I am not mistaken, previous member posts indicated that we can use our U.S. credit cards for MACs and purchases in Costa Rica? As an option, if possible, I would probably use one of two of our U.S. credit cards, with current interest rates of 6.0% each.
soldierMemberJust received an email from our BCT representative in Costa Rica. BCT does not have a debit card to link to our colones account. How difficult would it be if we decided to open and transfer our current Ltda. dollars and colones from BCT; to HSBC? Will our CR attorney and we have to go through another dog-and-pony show, to get another Ltda. colones and dollars account with HSBC, for a debit card?
soldierMemberDavid,
Thanks, your input was greatly appreciated.
