Dan,
Trying to hang in there for this civilian Fed pension, for the purchase of a sailboat in Costa Rica. Already have VA disability and military retirement. I sometimes would like to throw in the towel; however, I envision myself and my wife on the deck of our sailboat, sailing back and forth from Costa Rica to Mexico and Panama. Take care.

Wishing you both the best! We may meet at the range, still debating whether I should bring my twin babies (Colt 45s.) We are right behind you, I still need to be a Fed for four more years, to collect another pension. If it were not for 26 years of civilian fed service, I would be sitting in my back yard, or, walking to the beach in Playa Hermosa, Guancaste. Soon, very soon!
Pura Vida.
soldierMemberThe U.S. will never win the “War On Drugs.” The term “War On” is always used, however, no war is ever won. Some of the U.S. States have decriminalized marijuana use, for medical purposes. Mendesino County, California, has a thriving legal marijuana grow, for personal use only, CNBC recently had a one hour special on that matter. The U.S. should adapt the european philosophy on marijuana, however, that may not happen; because thousands have earned income from the so called war on drugs. There are thousands of veterans who utilize marijuana, for medical purposes, and, their service-connected disabilities. These men and women have paid the price for service to the U.S., yet, under current federal law, they are criminals, by using marijuana to mitigate service-connected disabilities. Why are U.S. citizens not demanding to know why such large drug shipments are being allowed to enter the U.S. from Mexico? They should start by asking the CIA, NSA and the U.S. Border Patrol.
soldierMemberSadly, the media has not really reported on the total extent of the executions and assassinations in Mexico. The army and police are out-gunned and out-maned; even with U.S. arms sales to Mexico. Then there is the issue of corruption and association with the cartels by officials, police and military. If you look outside the box, is it really the cartel hit men, or, police and/or army personnel, under contract or threat! Just follow the money trail. Mexico is on the brink of a new government, a cartel government. In short, the Mexican government is unwilling and unable to surpress the cartel’s trade. The U.S. spends millions of dollars every year, assisting Mexico, in an attempt to surpress the cartels, without success. Costa Rica is a paradise, unfortunately, it has to be neighbored by Mexico.
soldierMemberI agree with the other members responses. You do not need a corporate entity to open a bank account. However, we did initiate a corporation, our lawyer, with only one banking statement from my wife and myself, opened our account; in three days. Our lawyer’s letter of reference, opened the bank account, faster than a speeding bullet. We opened a banking account with BCT, the personnel speak english, and, the personal banking services were excellent. We opened a dollar and colone account, however, the colone account only draws a petty interest rate.
soldierMemberI recently just joined the Association of Residents of Costa Rica. I will need to do some research, however, I hope the association may have some influence on officials. Out of ten of my friends, seven plan on relocating to another country. Costa Rica is sitting on a financial gold mine, in terms of attracting retirees and wealth. Panama and Mexico have some great incentives for foreign retirees, maybe, Costa Rica will realize its financial gain, and enact new legislation, soon.
soldierMemberI am sorry for your loss. In addition to the local law enforcement avenue; another option may be Interpol. They can be contacted at http://www.interpol.int.
soldierMemberRegretfully, this appears to be a torture/assassination.
soldierMemberHaving been a complex litigation paralegal, and assisted on numerous class action litigation cases. Fellow members, proceed with caution; attorneys will not tell you what we in the legal field already know; attorneys and law firms acquire most of the settlement monies. This is accomplished via a fee petition to the Court. The fee petition lists attorneys and paralegal fees, hours worked on the case by all parties, copy fees, mailing fees, the list is too numerous for me to continue. The Court can also award a “Multiplyer,” usually 1-3 times the amount of the fee petition. In a settlement, class members usually only receive a token amount of the settlement monies. Look at all your legal options, prior to becoming a class member.
soldierMemberAside from the police aspect, and, the UV radiation. There is also the aspect of security, our Fed vehicles are tinted all the way around, pitch black; for that reason. Also, many police task forces vehicles are also tinted all the way around, for that reason. Fed and police personnel are always targets, here in the U.S.and in latin countries.
soldierMemberpebo1,
Thanks for the information. That was one article that I missed. I would venture to guess/hope that CR will match or surpass retiree exemptions, provided by the surrounding latin neighbors.
soldierMemberBeing the eternal optimist, and, Costa Rica’s desire to attract baby boomers such as myself; hopefully, there will be duty free vehicle and household imports enacted. I will not be relocating full-time for another four years. It would be great if I could ship my current 4 X 4 Honda and Toyota SUVs without duty. If I am not mistaken, duty free vehicle imports were terminated in 1970 or 1971.
soldierMembercfry,
Did I read correctly, a new Santa Fe selling for $44,000? Even with the import tax, that seems excessive.
soldierMemberI am considering purchasing a Garmin handheld GPS, with topigraphical display. Can anyone provide any positives or negatives, regarding handhelds in Costa Rica? I have also read that NavSat has excellent maps, however, I am not sure how current the data is for Costa Rica.
soldierMembertomstew1,
I appreciate and respect your comments. My sayings for years have been, The american dream is no longer in America; and, the american dream is only in effect, when you are sleeping. After serving combat tours in Vietnam, The Gulf War and Iraq, I finally realized, I had not soldiered for democracy, freedom or to keep america secure. Rather, I was the tool to keep the top 1% in power and wealth. Also, in reality, corporations and the top 1% control the wealth and the world’s natural resources. We can all vote until we turn blue, however, the power of our citizen’s votes; are only an illusion. My fellow service members and I took an oath to protect the Constitution, against enemies foreign and domestic. Yet, we allow corrupt and power hunger politicians to initiate immoral wars and rape america. The true enemy is the political system, politicians, corporations, the Supreme Court and the top 1%. I consider myself a patriot, I have tried voting, I have written politicians, I have joined organizations, and I have engaged the enemy in combat. That having been said, I look forward to living a healthy and affordable life in Costa Rica.
