Dan,
In August 2009, the VA granted me 100% disability, permanent and total disability, with special monthly compensation. Like yourself, we will be retiring to CR, and through online research, I became aware that the VA pays for service-connected disabilities in CR; and around the world. I downloaded the application from online, and mailed it to Denver, Colorado. About two weeks later, I received the approval letter for VA foreign medical treatment. Refer to the following for addition information: hac.fmp@med.va.gov; http://www.4.va.gov/hac/forbeneficiaries/fmp/fmp.asp; telefax: 303-331-7803 and VA Foreign Medical Program Office, P.O. Box 469061, Denver, Colorado 80246-9061.
Hope this helps, it is a pleasure corresponding with a fellow brother in-arms. Take care.
Alfred
soldierMemberDavid,
The additional info is greatly appreciated. I will follow your recommendation.
soldierMemberWas ist das alles? Sounds like a price comparison inquiry, vehicle expense inquiry. Another member hit it on the head, the import taxes; make the vehicles more expensive.
soldierMemberDavid,
Thank you for the information. It appears I will need to have a couple of them shipped to CR. Take care.
soldierMemberGreat information. Does anyone know if and where one can buy an adjustable queen size mattress? My wife needs a hard mattress, for medical reasons; while I need a more soft mattress. If possible, I would like to avoid buying one here in the U.S., and shipping it to CR. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
soldierMemberLotus,
Thanks. As luck may have it, we vacationed in CR September-October 2009, decided to just take a look at some of the beachfront homes and prices in Playa Hermosa, Guancaste. We looked at eight homes. The last home was the one we both wanted, and, at a 30% discount (the seller was in a divorce situation and needed to sell at a fire sale.) To add to our luck, the seller was willing to finance at only 3% interest on the outstanding balance, after 50% down. Talked to friends in CR and my accountant in the U.S., they all strongly advised us to buy. In just three short days, we hired an CR attorney, started a Ltda. and hired a property management company. To continue our luck, the home is only four years old, and came fully furnished with top-of-the-line appliances and furniture. Take Care.
soldierMemberWe have seller financing for our beachfront, we placed 50% down, and pay the sellers corporate trust every six months. The owner is only charging us 3% interest on the outstanding balance.
soldierMemberThe most important issue currently pressing both parties, jobs. The bull is so thick, I’m glad I am wearing my combat boots. If there were such an entity has honesty in Washington and the politicians, they would administer tough love; by telling the voters that the jobs will never come back, because of the global ecomomy, NAFTA, CAFT and other global trade agreements. In addition, americans will continue getting the short end of the stick, as long as america maintains a two party system!
soldierMemberWe closed on a beachfront in Playa Hermosa, Guancaste in November 2009. We retained a property management company in the area, owned by Americans and Costa Ricans. The monthly cost is $115.00 a month. Which includes weekly home inspection, bill payments etc. We are in a HOA, which takes care of the grounds and security within a gated community.
soldierMemberThanks everyone for your comments. I respect and appreciate all the points of view expressed. As a veterans advocate, Vietnam vet, Gulf War vet, Iraq vet and 100% disabled vet, I merely wanted others to be aware of the plight of all disabled and nondisabled vets.
soldierMemberbradycarl,
I would strongly agree with Sue in “You do not select CR, CR selects you.” My first trip to CR was in 1985. I had never heard of CR prior to that. A friend invited me to CR, I stayed a month, and knew from then on, that is where I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I can also relate to your decision to move to CR without a prior visit. I myself have traveled and lived throughout the world. I would caution however, that one must determine whether they can acclimate to a particular country. Many years ago, my friends and family also thought I had totally lost my mind, when I informed them I was moving to Thailand. Like yourselves, I have always had the irresistable urge for traveling adventure. Follow your heart, but, keep your feet solidly on the ground!
soldierMemberDavid,
Thanks for the information you provided on the window film, it was very informative. I will have the film installed on all our windows during our next trip to CR. Take care.
soldierMemberI had a similar speeding ticket situation two years ago. I was pulled over by a police officer holding a hand held radar gun on the side of the road. In his broken english, he merely said “Me No Problem, You No Problem.” Which I understood as, give me a donation to the policemans fund. I made the small donation, because I was in a rush to get to San Jose for a meeting. After my meeting, I met with a friend, a long time resident of CR. He advised me that I should have paid the ticket. He mentioned that some police officers merely take the donation, then, still process and file a ticket. This can cause problems for the individual, down the road.
soldierMemberDavid,
Can you provide an approximate cost of the window film you referenced? Is it very available in CR? This is something that I may want to have placed on my new home.soldierMemberJohn,
I salute you for your service. I do not want to get too far off the title topic, however, I agree and disagree with you in part. I invite your attention to http://www.vawatchdog.org, created by and for veterans. This site will enlighten anyone to the horrors of our so called Veterans Administration and benefit entitlements. There are veterans and disabled veterans that are homeless in my city, I trip over them going to and coming from work every day. This is in part because the VA Out-Reach Program is a failure, vets are mentally and/or physically unable to apply for benefits, and/or are unaware of their entitlements; and, vets have given up applying for benefits because of processing waiting periods of two years to a maximum of ten years for some. There are vets who have died waiting on their claims to be processed. I also refer you to http://www.va.gov, where homeless vet data can be reviewed. Also, no vet, disabled or not, should be in a homeless situation, or facing home forclosure proceedings, after serving our country, in a combat or noncombat tour(s) of duty. I leave you with this: “God and the soldier, we all adore in time of danger, not before. When the danger is passed and things righted, God is forgotten, and the soldier slighted.” -
