We have one on the east coast in the canals that we’re using for tours through the jungle and the national park. We’re just getting started so the boat and website aren’t the way we want them yet. I’ve seen several boats like ours in the canals there and I’m told a guy near Parismina welds them. I was at his place once to look at some of the boats he makes but I’m not in Costa Rica right now. I’ll ask my daughter (who lives there) if she can get the name. The problem for you would be trasporting it unless you plan to use it on the East coast?

If you’re going to lease (or rent) a Geo Tracker or any other vehicle from what fijatevo is calling “informal” companies I’d suggest being very-very careful. Don’t put any money up front until you SEE that the vehicle is what you were told you’d be getting. I would stick to the well known larger companies. A good deal isn’t always such a good deal.

How much does it cost to wire money from President’s Choice Bank in Canada to Banco National in C.R.? What are all the charges on both ends – if you don’t mind telling me? I have money in that bank but have never tried wiring it and am wondering if it’s a better deal than I’m getting from the other guys.

    Thank you

    Hi Cindy:

My guy is Jeffery 506-888-1156 (cell)

Very safe driver and believe me, feeling safe in traffic WILL be an issue if you’re not used to the way they drive there. Former tour guide and now works as a taxi driver with the good company in San Jose. The one that has all the new cars and has the airport contract. His English is good and his knowledge of Costa Rica is, of course, excellent as far as I can tell. If you want him to pick you up at 9 he’s there 15 minutes early. He always wears dress pants, shirt and tie. Very professional guy. And he’s a really nice guy too. I’m plugging him hard here because I’ve used him and really like the guy, AND he just got married! If you use him tell him Rick from Vancouver Canada say’s hello.

For some reason the ocean water (or something else) gives me ear infections every time I go to C.R. I’ve been charged $20 – $40 for a visit with meds dispensed for ear infections and for pain control. I have travel coverage but it’s so inexpensive to see a Dr. I don’t bother to make a claim.

By the way, if you too get those ear infections when in C.R. or any tropical place, my Canadian Dr. told me to take a little rubbing alcohol with me and dip the end of my little finger in it and rub it inside the ears when I first feel the problem starting. I’m not giving medical advice here but it works like a charm for me.

I just got a quote to ship an (approx) 70lb box to San Jose from Vancouver Canada via UPS. $1200. Cheaper to fly down and deliver it myself. (Hope it’s okay to post this Scott.)

Thanks cesca. I’m going back to San Jose in Feb. and if I haven’t shipped a vehicle or bought one by then I’m going to give Dollar a try this time. Thanks for the tip.

I would call the airlines and ask if you can bring those boxes on that flight if I were you. There are times when at least Continental and probably the others will not accept anything but the two plus one carry on. High travel times – check for sure. We got burned at Christmas but that was flying out of Canada. Perhaps US departures are different.

I read somewhere that the airlines have figured out that extra weight = increased fuel charges that so they plan on continuing to crack down and stick it to the passenger. I never fly anything other than coach so it may be different for those who can afford business class.

    Hi G.T.

I’m told by our guy in Limon that there is actualy more “room” on things other than vehicles. I assume this means there are legal loopholes that he’ll work hard to get for me. If he says it’s okay, I’ll post the rate when I get it done.

I noticed the airlines are cracking down a bit. Embargos I think they’re calling it. So check. I just dropped my daughter off at Continental and they rejected her 3rd checked in bag(they usually charge about $70 or $80 per extra bag over 2) and made us take out things from the other two to get them down around 50lbs. Then, (get this!) we are left with all these things on the floor that won’t fit into the 3rd bag I have to drag back to my house before going to the office that morning. I ask for a bag (expecting a plastic garbage bag or something) and they tell me I’ll have to pay for it. All they have is a stack of Continental carry-on bags for $30 US. Here we are in a Canadian airport and we have to pay them in US funds for a bag so I can haul the stuff from her bag to my car in the parking lot! She explained to me as I dragged the stuff away “in case you were thinking about it, sir, no refunds on the bag!” Not like the old days, flying, is it?

    Thanks for the tips.

I intend to pay the tax on both truck and trailer and then put the trailer on some land we have so I can use it when I’m there. Our (recommended by family) guy in Limon says we can avoid the tax for 6 months but then we have to pay it. Problem is my daughter’s Costa Rican boyfriend can’t drive it until we pay the tax so we’re going to pay it right away. We already looked into the parts and service thing and that will work out.

Our place is very close to the ocean so I painted the underside metal parts. The top is fiberglass and I’ve painted any metel roof parts with a protective coating. On the land we’ll have a 30Amp plug that I’m bringing with me – wired in to our electical system so the air. will work. My daughter and her Costa Rican boyfriend are building a house on the land and so they’ll be able to keep an eyeball on it for me. The truck will be there for them to use in the business and, of course, to pick me up in San Jose so I don’t have rent cars or take taxi’s anymore – therefor avoiding another less than satisfactory car rental in Costa Rica experience. (All I’m allowed to say on this website is do your homework before renting a vehicle in Costa Rica if you want to avoid problems)

I would love to hear from anyone who’s shipped a car to C.R. if they would recommend that shipper. My Costa Rican future son-in-law and his family don’t know anyone they can recommend.

    Thanks,

I’ve decided to bring an 04 pick up truck I keep as a tow vehicle for my travel trailer AND the travel trailer to Costa Rica mainly because I have hardly had time to use them (the truck has about 5000 miles on it)ever since buying them a few years ago.

I’ve been learning a lot on this forum and others. I found out it’s who you know that affects how much tax you pay on importing vehicles. One quote was for well over $10,000 for the truck tax and another was for around $6000. The guy who quoted lower is a close friend of a Costa Rican business partner. He says its all legal and above board.

“Contactos” he smiled and said when I asked how come

I’m sorry for wasting your time. My daughter tells me we can’t recommend him due to some minor problems that are unresolved. She feels we don’t want to take a chance that it would come back on our reputations if you weren’t happy with they guys’ work.

I pay the bill and thought everything was going well. She didn’t want to bother me with small details so I hadn’t heard our project has some minor troubles. I should have checked with her first. Anyway, bottom line is I need to support her decision to not recommend him. Sorry for speaking up without doing my homework and for wasting your time

    Ssure Shaun:

Jeffery’s cell is 888-1156. He’s a straight shooter in my opinion, and very safe driver too. That’s his cell. If that number is no good get back to me and I’ll look for his card.

    Hi Cairoc:

Yes, I can but it’ll take me a few days to get his name. He’s just finishing a house for my daughter right now and he did a small office for us last year. His name is Roger something and I’ll post his last name as soon as I can. I feel he’s a good guy to deal with and his work is good. I get my Costa Rican son-in-law to deal with him so I don’t remember his last name. I’ve met him and he speaks some English.
