Thanks John! We are also keeping our PC with lots and lots of storage, etc. This is just to help us with our new laptop service!
sueandchrisMemberHuh….that is a VERY important issue, so many thanks! Sue
sueandchrisMemberWell, my computer is used for both business and pleasure. We don’t run any video games, but do access other kinds of creative material on the web. Obviously, lots of email activity and we would like to use the laptop for more media in Costa Rica such as streaming movies and other content to the TV, etc. I use the computer for business activities which are related to my consultation work with developers and design work for private clients. It appears that I will be keeping a significant percentage of clients, so would really like the new laptop to perform well with proprietary design programs, including CAD. I guess those are our needs.
sueandchrisMemberSprite: Are you, too, finding that you can run lots of things at the same time AND listen to music on your Mac? Also, I understand that the whole issue of viruses is greatly (if not completely) eliminated on the Mac. Is this true? Thx.
sueandchrisMemberMaravilla: Well I guess I am just taking this as entertainment! My gringo husband likes to “fulfill his masculinity” on a damn regular basis.
For all of us in outstanding, powerful gringo marriages – why bother with a response? Reading Don Diego is somewhat like sneaking a ridiculous romance novel out of the library…hidden between other, more serious books. Fun, fun, fun…but not so satisfying on a regular basis! I’m guessing all of us “women of a certain age” have had more than our share of the Don Diegos…fun, annoying, and in the end…not very satisfying! But this thread sure brings back some tasty memories! No?!
sueandchrisMemberOh BOY! The Forum hasn’t been this much fun for ages! And by the way, the old bull, young bull joke has been a staple in the construction field for (probably) centuries. I STILL tell that joke on jobsites.
I think I’ll kick back and drink a mojito while I keep an eye on this thread. Scott – this is a thread we should all have to pay a few bucks to keep reading!
sueandchrisMemberYes, and we see him, our bosoms will begin to heave! This is great fun and a real hoot!
sueandchrisMemberScott:
We just got back from Costa Rica yesterday and had the opportunity to travel on the new (is it called the Pista del Sol?) highway from two different points. All I can say is “WOW”!!! We went from Puriscal (via the back way thru San Pablo) and then on down to Jaco. The whole trip was about 50 minutes. Had lunch at the Taco Bar in Jaco and then blasted back on the highway and got off at the Atenas exit, and then to San Ramon via Palmares (which seemed to us like the fastest way back to San Ramon) and that trip was just at an hour. Very little traffic.
I really agree with you..this highway is a BIG game changer. Reminds me of when the little coastal towns of SoCal were finally connected to LAX by freeways. The new highway experience helped us decide on property in San Ramon, which we bought on Wednesday. We feel that San Ramon is now “close enough” to the beaches for us, but will “stay” San Ramon because it isn’t TOO close to the new highway.
Honestly, being on the highway was sort of an “altered experience”….it was so fundamentally different from all of our other travels in Costa Rica. Whew…..
sueandchrisMemberWell, I did get through the whole thing. Jeez….my overwhelming feeling was that the post was really, really insulting to MEN. I am privileged to know smart, mature, powerful MEN (including my own husband) who value their commitments, families and marriages. They are interesting and sexy and in my opinion, these men get better with age.
I’ll bet there are more than a few men on this forum that are just this kind of good man. I get that there are men who are cads and buffoons, but my life has been enhanced by far more good men than bad.
It is always of great interest to read these differing opinions…just wanted to add mine.
sueandchrisMemberMaravilla: I can’t imagine who would thing that the life you’ve described wouldn’t be lovely! Thanks for the great details!
sueandchrisMemberYes, some of those are just black “blankets” for passive solar gain or much more elaborate systems. Friends here in the high mountains of Arizona have a small solar array JUST to run and heat the pool. It was really expensive to start with, so not sure how long it would take to pay itself back.
Pools can be sort of a pain, but a couple of properties we are looking at already have them, so really good to know these figures!
sueandchrisMemberExcellent thought. Our realtor has suggested that we see several months of utility bills on any property we are considering – a sort of sampling of different seasons.
sueandchrisMemberJo: Thanks for your reply! These responses have a HUGE disparity on costs. Where is your home located and is it “all electric”, such as appliances, etc?
We are looking at a couple of properties with pools…..$130 bills would be OK, but $300 bills? I am afraid too much for our budget!
These kind of concrete facts are invaluable to folks who are “house shopping”!
sueandchrisMemberjdcop: Glad to clarify. The person in the picture is the “Sue” half of the couple “Sue and Chris” and I am the only part of our “couple” which is a member of this forum.
You are correct that this thread was originally about education. I have been responding to an earlier response by 2BNCR. Of course, his mention of gender equality is certainly a part of education in Costa Rica. I have noted with interest the the many Costa Rican women that I have met with various university degrees. As stated, I think this speaks volumes about the direction that Costa Rica may be headed.
sueandchrisMember2BNCR: Nice rant, but here is the deal. Not a SINGLE thing you have cited here (and by the way, you might want to hit your “spell check” before remarking on someone else’s use of wording) is news to me about Costa Rica. This will hardly be my first exposure to heavy cultural differences that have led others to “run home with their tails between their legs”. This wasn’t a discussion about the many, many cultural differences between Costa Rica and other countries – including the United States. This was a discussion about established laws that have provided Costa Rican women with an high degree of gender equality.
More and more Costa Rican women are graduating from universities and entering the professions. No social force in the world changes societies more quickly than this very phenomenon. And while I like Costa Rica just fine the way it is, it will look very, very different more quickly than imaginable because of this social change.
I like Costa Rica BECAUSE of its striking cultural differences. But thanks for your “reality” advice. You may know Dorothy, but you don’t know me. What? Did you figure I would “surrender the field” because you got tough?
