Can’t comment on the origins of the phrase, but live here in Atenas and LOVE the climate! Also, we have almost NO problems with mildew here….a big issue in some of the higher elevations.
The marvelous thing about Costa Rica is that it would be really difficult for someone not to find a climate that is “just right” for their individual tastes.
sueandchrisMemberWe too have the Gines unit, purchased from Rojas y Hijos in Grecia. We love the unit which has terrific delivery and efficiency. We use one medium-sized tank per five weeks.
When it becomes necessary, we will replace our electric dryer with a propane unit.Love those great, hot showers!!!
sueandchrisMemberAnother reason to try and “live in the moment” with those we love.
sueandchrisMemberWhat David said, but…..we are working on our Spanish. We feel that it is a courtesy to make a good attempt to be conversational.
sueandchrisMemberOh yeah…..one of our favorite things about Costa Rica: the “You’re Stupid” Rule.
-You see that there is no railing on the 3rd floor terrace, get drunk and fall to your death….”You’re Stupid!”
-You walk along the roadway in the dark and get run down by a big truck…”You’re Stupid”.
-You hire the guy to be your gardener that EVERYBODY tells you is a thief and your house gets cleaned out..”You’re Stupid”…
and SO many more examples! Here in Costa Rica the responsibility to NOT be stupid falls squarely on the head of the individual. Good luck on suing for damages because if you decide to try….”YOU’RE STUPID”!!!!!
sueandchrisMemberI can’t speak to your specific condition, but Dr. Yamilah Bourzid at CIMA hospital is an absolutely top-notch cardiologist…..and we have the emergency and follow-up care to prove it. She is outstanding!
sueandchrisMemberThe way that time seems to “stretch” here. Instead of feeling as though life is slipping away in a blur of days, each moment seems to be experienced. Something we didn’t expect, but love.
Our terrific Tico neighbors with their kindness, sense of fun and tolerance as we SL-O-OWLY learn the language.
The blue, blue, blue skies.
…and so much more!
sueandchrisMemberBased on the confusion about 5471 I called my tax accountant in the states (who did our last return WITH the 5471) and basically grovelled and begged until he agreed to again do this year’s taxes. We are making a trip back in March and he will have everything prepared to sign then.
We now have a SECOND corporation that holds our car and cellphones, so will be interesting to see if this requires a whole new 5471 or just an addition to the first form.
What a royal pain in the arse!!
sueandchrisMemberGoing Like Sixty:
Well this is our first year here in Atenas and so far we have been COVERED UP in visitors with more to come….sigh. BUT, everyone has let us know that they couldn’t commit to doing this often as they have other places/folks to visit. Other friends here who have been here many years have less visitors, but still all have guest quarters of some kind. Even our friends who are renters have an area for guests.
Hope this helps.
sueandchrisMember
miss the snow? HA! i don’t think so. this morning the high at my house in colorao is ZERO!! ZERO FAHRENHEIT!
With a low of -20F, and two feet of snow on the way. but where i live, two feet could easily turn into 4 or 5 before it’s over. i just had some iced cappuccino while i was sitting in my hammock watching a fog bank roll across the valley. that’s the only ice i ever want to see — two cubes bobbing in my organic espresso with raw milk (and no fear of being arrested by the FDA!)
I have a friend in the Boulder area who emails or calls me every day to report the (terrible) low and high temps she is experiencing. She is doing this so I will feel sad for her and guilty about CR weather……..AS IF!!!!!
sueandchrisMemberThis has been an interesting thread. Before moving to CR and buying property here, we took a long, hard, steely-eyed look at our motivations, our money and mainly, our desires.
Our homes are always “for sale” so our purchase price/location/product were very important. But this time more important considerations were lifestyle, new friends (both Tico and expat) and the way that Costa Rica seems to stretch out time in a luxurious and peaceful way.
As a result, our property will sell when it sells…. Our expectations have been exceeded in so many ways. Pura Vida.
January 12, 2011 at 10:28 pm in reply to: Proof of leaving CR after 90 days needed at airports in US? #167832sueandchrisMemberOn this subject, can anyone give specifics regarding the 2nd, 3rd and 4th extension of the 90 day visa. We are hearing lots of different (and differing) reports regarding folks experience with this issue. We are thinking of having a family member come down for a longer period of time…somewhat less than a year, but understand that the requirements have changed. Thoughts??
sueandchrisMemberHuh! Would love to use on-line, but have two Schedule C forms (the last ones) that will also need to be submitted with this return. So would like to use a local U.S. accountant for this one last return and then can file ourselves.
David…..say more about the 5471 being filed apart from the tax return. We were given to believe that they needed to be filed at the same time………
sueandchrisMember
Your friend is a sick, sick man, Versatile.
Marcia showed me a wintry picture online this morning. All the trees and ground were covered and a guy was hoofing it across the street. Marcia, being from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, thought it was pretty. My response was that the best part of the picture was that the guy crossing the street wasn’t me.
Oh David, thank you SO much for this great laugh!!!
sueandchrisMemberI have been having fun reading this thread. I now have a long-running back-and-forth discussion with friends who wouldn’t leave their house without their GPS to guide them. I don’t want a GPS because it would have robbed me of some great experiences that I have had exploring Costa Rica.
Getting lost, getting found and the little “consultations” with various and sundry Costa Rican strangers has been one of the special delights we have shared while exploring different parts of Costa Rica.
I will admit that San Jose is pretty intimidating, but we have managed (so far) to find every place we needed with very little fuss. Of course, we always get good directions from someone before we take off for San Jose proper.
Road trips have always been one of the great pleasures of my life and introducing the GPS would undoubtedly subtract the serendipty and fun from the activity.
