Hi Scott: I am guessing that you mean the “regular” Costa Rican mail service…yes? We are looking at Aerocasillas because we can order things online and the Miami address means that companies will ship to us. How do you handle this issue?

    Thx!

We are just three weeks away from our move to Costa Rica. I guess I feel that the pleasure of living and being challenged by a different culture will probably outweigh my few concerns. But those concerns would be:

Theft….it seems to be pervasive and we will take some steps to secure the things we would not wish to have to replace. We too hope to become good neighbors in our little town and perhaps folks will help us with good advice. Another friend who lives there advised to accept the reality and then stop dwelling on the issue. Good advice for probably most thorny problems.

Language….to work on becoming at least conversational so as to have a deeper experience with life in Costa Rica.

To accept the extreme challenge (and long-desired dream) to “learn to be still”.

Making new friends, ex-pat and Tico.

Just some thoughts, oh and to try to remember that “poop happens”….everywhere!

That was a great article, Maravilla. (Titled “Cheapskates Next Door, The Cheapskate’s Revenge”. Our reading of “Your Money Or Your Life”, many years ago had a direct connection to our ability to move to Costa Rica this year.

Agreed. But I have recently met three different people from our small town who have cash and are headed to Costa Rica. There is still money floating around (albeit less money), but people are still interested in following their dreams. And I still think that the price point for resales is very important in this environment.

And the old saying still applies “Location, location, location!” The market in Atenas (in a certain price point) is still moving well. But I still believe that the “turn around” time is longer in Costa Rica.

Maravilla, aren’t you up on the north side of San Ramon??

Another thought: I always urge my clients to choose 20″ or larger tiles. This is a great design trick to making your square footage seem much larger. Try a creamy travertine-style tile and choose a grout in the “mid-range” of the tile color.

Also use this size on vertical surfaces for the same effect. When using this size tile on bathroom vanities, I call for a 20″ tile with a 2″ “cut” at the rear of the countertop and another 2″ cut for the vertical drop to finish the work.

And having a slick tile floor is like living on a “Slip N’ Slide”….ever seen a dog trying to get traction on one of these floors!!!!

And another thought: A truly intimate and deep relationship is something remarkable. You and your wife may want to spend some of your new-found time together working toward this goal. I think most relationships exist only on the surface and never touch the profoundly satisfying state of real connection. Perhaps you could take a chance and sit down with your wife to discuss your fears….and your hopes. I think her response to your sincerity would be surprising and gratifying! Great good luck to you both.

Does anyone have experience with cabinet makers in the Palmares area? I know that in a previous thread, a good cabinet maker was discussed in Sarchi, but I am wondering about Palmares. If so, do you have the contact info??

Just got back from Costa Rica and wanted to pass on a recommendation for an EXCELLENT little pizza restaurant I found by accident. It is Restaurante Natura’ and it is located near the Poas Volacano exit on the pista. (Just opposite that big facility where the gas trucks fill up.) Oh my gosh, the pizza here is so outstanding and the two young brother/owners Tito and Patrick are just great! Their phone number is 2434-2472 (in case my directions are screwy).

Now I can save myself about $2,000.00 on that pizza oven!

I am heading out of Arizona tomorrow to return “home” to Costa Rica. This state has been embarrassing itself politically/intellectually for DECADES before this latest fiasco. I’ve spent my life here..alternately being highly amused and highly chagrined for what passes for public discourse. You’ll have to trust me when I say that if the ultra-conservative Arizona Republic is calling “birthers” the “far-fringe right”….well that is something!

As for the new legislation….we have a HUGE portion of our citizenship in Arizona that is Hispanic. Imagine how excited they are going to be to find themselves rousted at every turn and asked for their “documents”. Jeeeez!

Costaricafinca: I laughed so hard (at myself) after I read your reply! This is exactly the excellent sort of question I always ask my clients……”how often are you REALLY going to USE that sauna/1,000 square foot kitchen/dog grooming studio/formal dining room for 30?” etc.?

Thanks for the wake-up call! I keep hearing about a couple of excellent pizza places….think we’ll just drive!
