With all respects……… 2,000,000 minus 150,000 perpetual tourists (3x a year), 300,000 Nicaraguensas, and 350,000 others leaves 900,000 “perfect tourists”.

Why does the National Tourist organisation need more money to get more tourists to Costa Rica ?

TWO million ? ONE big joke !

The property management company will send a guard, for 24/7 security. Probably this guard will not rob, but some guards have friends who never will be your friends…. 😉

But this level of robbery is not true for everyone here on the board, because many live in gated communities. Ask ‘m why…….

Quote: “I would NEVER buy a house in a gated community”. Nothing wrong with that idea but think about how you will secure your house (not only when you are out).

If you don’t they will rob and steel everything (including electricity cables).

quote “It isn’t even a law yet, so how can they enforce that increase?” The government already knows that this will be the new law and gave the ambassies instructions.

    To avoid problems and deceptions……..

Put your house/apartment in a corporation (Sociedad Anonima), well protected, sometimes easier to sell (transfer shares), and you can receive the income whatever visa you have. Your are not working, so that’s no problem.

Quote: “and I imagine that it is easier for a temp resident to get perm residency via child birth than it is for a perpetual tourist”.

No, parents will get permanent residency, no matter if they are tourist or temp resident.

The $ 100 does make sence…. many “tourists” stay here and take the chance. Others pay some money to lawyers for a stamp. And others go to Panama, Nicaragua and St. Andres and spend their money there.

Now the government doesn’t receive much from these “tourists”….. Maybe they can make $ 400 out of each of ‘m.

AM-CostaRica (today 26-11-2008): “Tourists are considered non-residents, and the draft continues the stipulation that they may not work in the country. However, like a previous draft, the revised version gives tourists the right to renew their stay for 90 days with the payment of $100. Tourists also are allowed an additional 90 days in which to apply for other immigration categories.”.

    Live here like a “tourist”….. what’s the problem ?

Today in AMCostaRica (conference on the future of Costa Rican real estate):

“Experts also said that a more strident immigration law, which would require U.S. rentistas to show at least $5,000 in income a month, was unlikely to further impact the housing market, even if passed in its current form.

“The majority of foreigners who come here are here for just a few months,” said Aleyda Bonilla, a member of the real estate association “Residents who come down here for development, in terms of real estate, are usually the rentistas who would be able to afford to pay $5,000 a month.””

Our great leader and moderator Scott is in Spain looking for new oportunities in real estate (joke).

Read this on our WLCR: https://www.welovecostarica.com/members/1982.cfm

    If this becomes true:

“Another troubling portion of the proposed law is that any renewal of the Pensionado or Rentista status would have to be done under the new proposed law. This means that if you were approved under the $600 program and you wanted to renew the status you would have to qualify with the $2,000 stipulated in the new law.”

a lot of pensionados can start packing…..

The caja is not very expensive. But probably you don’t want to stand in line at 6:00am and wait several hours before it’s your turn. Hope it doesn’t happen: you get a car-accident and break 2 legs, need surgery and stay in the hospital for 3 weeks. Are you going to pay the bill ? You probably have an insurance somewhere else (INS ?) and contribute to other insurance- and health-systems.
If you contribute to the caja, they will NOT send you a bill.

About choosing a visa-category: probably this comes closest 😉

By the way: I don’t know you and this is a discussion-forum. Nothing personal against you and not jealous at all. I agree with this new immigration law, others too and that’s part of the discussion…..
