Thanks Scott, anybody out there know where there might be some “cheap” ones????
Almost every mall in the valley has a sports store/ Multi Plaza, Mall Cariari etc… they will have the classic style weights and bars for a reasonable price.

You definitely can haggle! Products can be bargained… usually between 5%-8% if you are paying in cash. This mainly is because they have figured into their cost the credit card fees they have to pay for accepting them. Most will give you 5% without a thought… but you have to ask for the cash price after they quote you. Some won’t so if you can get the same product next door it is worth the time for the 5%. Your choice.

Labor… the best way to know is to get the government chart for minimum/maximum wages. Then you know that a guy doing yard work makes an avg of around 1,500 colones an hour. Then just do the math and you will know if you are getting a fair labor quote. The reference for the Government chart I use is Roger Petersen’s Legal Guide to Costa Rica. I believe there is a new one available now with more up to date info.

You for sure need to know the hourly labor for handy men and gardeners to know what a fair quote is. The other day I was quoted double what it should be and he even knew that this gringo didn’t get off the boat yesterday… so shop, haggle and have fun! You will find fair, hard working and loyal helpers if you are patient and fair as well.

    Hi there,
You MAY be able to find one at Borbon in La Uruca in San Jose. Borbon has a nice selection of fishing equipment by CR standards. They are on the road toward the Land Rover agency going toward downtown on the La Uruca road. You turn left at the light just after the Shell Gas Station and before Land Rover… then go 100 meters to the next light and take a right… go about 100-200 meters and they are on your right. Hope this helps.

Hi there,
Nicoya is a very nice area. A more laid back country feel. Temperature in the hills would be fresh in the evenings and mornings with some breezes, but you can still expect some very warm daytime temperatures. Especially in the dry season. Nicoya is also home to many centurions. One of the few places in the world to boast such.

Earthquakes… well, as I understand there is a major fault line that runs through the southern part of the peninsula in the Cobano area. There was a large quake in the 90’s there if I recall correctly. I do not know for sure near the town of Nicoya. You can be assured the earth can and will move in Adventure Land…

    Best wishes in your search.
Maybe I am slow but what is a centurion???
I think I would get a second estimate on that well… How far down did they estimate to get water? If you have a stream on your property maybe you have water close? Does the stream originate on your property? 35k seems a about double what it should be… most places you can hit water from 50 meters to 75. Price should be about $125- $150 a meter if you negotiate well. Then extra for the casing. If they added a 220v pump and cistern/pressure tank… you would still be hard pressed to hit 20k at 75 meters…

I personally think you are being had… even with installation. You need to go to Guacamaya. Closest for you is probably the one at the rotunda just past the Parque de la Paz as you are headed towards Escazu from Zapote. They have tons of spare parts for everything. Good prices. Also, Are you sure you don’t just need it refurbished. I wish I could come up with a name of a reputable Radiator Shop but I can’t. They are all over the place so shouldn’t be to hard to get a couple more estimates. I would definitely shop around.

    Hi John,
There are 2 organic markets that I know of in the San Jose area. One is in Escazu on Wednesdays and the other in San Jose on Saturdays. I will look for the address info and post back. The AutoMercado in Escazu and Lindora does sell a “free range” egg… Brand name is (Huevo Criollo) and in Spanish says Huevos Pastoreo/pasture eggs on the package, yet it does not compare to the eggs from my birds in the yard. Still I do purchase from time to time. I do not recall seeing organic eggs at either of the markets but that could change from time to time.
the one that tastes more like a lime is probably a criollo, or key lime. but it definitely looks like you have a REAL lemon in the bunch. how did it taste? i just checked my trees and i have a lot of limon dulces, but no real lemons although i could swear i planted a tree 4 years ago. like you, i have no markers so until it produces fruit i have no way of knowing what’s what. and just what are we supposed to do with the sweet lemons? i put them in water with ice, but they sure don’t have much flavor.
HI Maravilla,
The trick with sweet lemons is that you must squeeze them and drink them straight away. If you wait for more than a few minutes they will lose their sweetness as the air hits them. So Squeeze and drink. No added water or anything. A real nice treat. Enjoy.

    Hi Soldier,
I have tried the electric fence before and do not like it. Like the other comment stated, if they run through the electric zone they will not want to come back through and can be quite terrifying for the dog. I know they do work but you have to spend a bit of time to get the dog and you to understand the system. The main reason I write is because they have to have the collar on always and in the tropical climate here the metal prongs in the collar will rub into the dogs neck and create a nasty infection which is not good here. Best if you can fence them, in my opinion. As with everything here… best to keep it simple. Best wishes for you and the dogs 😉
