I brought my large dog in a kennel 1 year ago , They brought the kennel into the baggage area and we showed the papers to security and went out the door. All the other info you have is the same as I did. Kennel has to be at the airport to cargo way ahead of flight. ( Maybe 4-5 hours.)Call your airline for the best info.
believe it or not but the law change the week before we came down. Now you have to have a Costa Rica importer to issue a number to give to the airlines now a days. When you get into San Jose the kennel will go thu the process and you can pick it up about two hours later…
ticorealtorMemberWell on 1700 a month you can forget
1.) eating out at the fast foods, Sodas and restaurants
2.) Driving your own car will take up about 70 dollars in gas a week if you have a small SUV.
3.) forget about shopping at Multi-Plaza or Terra Mall even down town will be eating into your budget for cloths.
4.) forget about buying electronics they will be double the price than the U.S.
5.) Health care will have to go onto the public system unless you have insurance or cash in the bank. Should pray that you don’t get sick if you have to to onto the national health system. My mother in-law will have to wait until March until they can look at her enlarged heart.Of course if the dollar strengthens again that will make a difference. But at this moment when my daughter and i go to Macdonald’s and for a happy meal, two cheese burgers and small fries it costs around nine dollars that has become crazy.
I think that many people have a mis understanding that it is much cheaper to live in a undeveloped country or a developing country. This is not always true… it depends on the currency that you are using and many other factors.
And like you are totally right about housing… most people will show you the stuff that is 300,000 or more because prices have shoot up dramatically here in the last six years.
Even our average Tico home in a Tico neighborhood is worth 90,000 dollars more since 2000. In many ways that is good because it shows that Ticos are making more than years past.
Can you live on 1700 a month? Yes you can but you will have to change your life style and understand that things will be a little different here in Costa Rica.
ticorealtorMemberWe brought our dog and cat down. The cat was a medium size cat and fit under the seat. The dog was a large one and was in the freight. Since the dog was in as freight we had to have a importer here in Costa Rica process some paper work. The cat no problems just take and go.
ticorealtorMemberFunny people are using China here… Look at the nice new stadium that Costa Rica has. Where do you think the labor and materials came from? Why would they import labor and items if it was not cheap and they were getting something out of it such as a boost to their economy. It was such a good deal for them that they tried to import labor for another project that they have but CR stopped them.
ticorealtorMemberWell they came and went now they are taking over another country! I guess it really hurt Costa Rica when they landed here! :?Ihttp://blogs.state.gov/index.php/site/entry/cp10_guyana
ticorealtorMemberHey this could be woodstock in Costa Rica!:D

My wife and I just moved to CR after 12 years of visiting and are building our casa and 3-4 rental cabinas with a view of Diamante waterfall. I have over 25 years of project management experience and she has around 25 years of property management under her belt.
Thanks,
Brian
Always be careful when people state how much experience they have. It might be in the U.S. but here in Costa Rica it is a different world. Property management here is a lot different because of language, culture and practices of the local government and ticos.
ticorealtorMemberWe are doing the tourist 90 day deal so we can pay the 4000 dollar taxes. In order to do that we had to have plates from the U.S.
ticorealtorMemberMy situation is a little different, since we moved back for family reasons its not like we are visitors. After the first week and everyone stopped by to say their hellos it is back to the normal life. How ever what really amazed me and my wife is how much Ticos think we are the crazy ones moving back. Most Ticos would not move back for family they would rather live in the U.S. and just send money back if needed. Ticos among Ticos would rather live the high life in the states than take care of their own family.
ticorealtorMemberhahaha.. again, I don’t want to disrespect missionary’s because some do a lot of work and help many people. How ever it is just a observation with the ones that I have met. I have not met any that live in the poor neighborhoods but I have met alot of them that live in the upper class areas. Most of course take advantage of Costa Rica’s status as a safe country and use it as the jumping points to other country. Its just funny because when you ask a person in the U.S. they would most likely think that the missionary are taking a hard hit to live in another country to work on their mission. Not understanding that they are most likely living far above the average Tico. 🙂
ticorealtorMemberplates… yep… the funny thing is that I asked the customs guy what do we do when your plates were stolen.. he said ask some one for new plate… he was tipping his head to a gavilan. Then I asked well if we have to pay 37 dollars for one can he get me Minnesota plates…. they said no problem..hahaha… I should have asked if he had hawaii…hahah
ticorealtorMemberI understand from the agents at Jetbox is that if it is a used tv, like ours all you need to do is have a letter written up stating what the value is. Don’t go crzy and say its 100 dollars then it won’t pass customs.
I like to use jet box because they will give you a quote on anything that you are thinking about buying.
The six month is really pretty easy because if you buy a bunch of stuff on Amazon and it is shipped in one box with the total value that is below the 500 you can write the taxes off.
ticorealtorMemberhmmm lost souls, yes Costa Rica is bad! Almost as bas as the U.S. hahaha.. Well like my wife says you can save lost souls while living in Escazu with a hot tub.:)
ticorealtorMemberhahaha.. this thread has turned some funny corners. A couple of days ago we met some JWs. They were a couple of retired ladies that were concentrating on the English speaking population in CR. I asked if they spoke any Spanish, they laughed and said no.
ticorealtorMemberWell we are in Tres Rios Cartago, we live in a Tico area called La Carpentaria. We butt up against the national park nice but we have a bus role by our house every half a hour. hahaha
